Just 18 months ago I sat next to my sis-in-law listening to Dr. Appel explain that ALS is a loaded gun & trauma is the trigger. In her case, an old spine injury. We bury her tomorrow so I'm not getting a kick...

I thought she died after answering the iron.

You know what Helen Keller said to me the other day? Nothing. She died when she came back from her trans-atlantic flight and contracted Lou Gehrig's disease from exposure to radium while trapped in an attic during the Hundred Years War.

My favorite part of that Helen Keller movie was when she escaped the Nazis by jumping that big old military motorcycle over the barb wire fence. Seeing her escape to freedom and win the bet by eating the most hard boiled eggs always inspires me.

Is it ironic of LG died of LG disease.... or is it more ironic that he didn't?

Thanks, he also said it's the nice guy's disease. Only good people get ALS. Pretty much right about that too. (Means the rest of us are safe, right?)

So true.. Lost my father in law over a year ago to ALS. Pray you never ever have to deal with this disease on any level. I don't think old Lou knew what he was getting into lending his name to this.

I honestly don't understand what's happening here. It's not his family or the medical community asking for this. Medical experts have pointed out that evidence of CTE is only noticable on the actual brain tissue, so what the hell is the point? Is it just a state congressperson trying to make a name for themselves?

He's dead, Jim.....

So, don't wear a red shirt... you'll live longer. Unless you're a blind deaf mute living in Austria (and a Jooo)...

Still dunno why Ayn Rand was hiding in that attic tho...

Spam Pajamas: Guy goes to the doctor. The doctor says Well I have good news and bad news. The good news is they're naming a disease after you.

"The good news is, see my hot receptionist over there? Yeah, I'm hitting that."

We need to perform a hostile takeover and cut up Gehrig into little pieces to put the ALS fakers out of jobs?

Where's Romney when you need him!

I'm pretty sure I read this exact headline on Fark within the last year or two.

ongbok: moops: Doesn't subby mean Anne Frank?

No you moron.

Anne Frank is the woman that took an axe and gave her mother 40 whacks. Then when she saw what she had done she gave her father 41.

Get it right.

Well, Radium poisoning really will drive you crazy.

That's not even Lou Gehrig's picture in the article. That's Gary Cooper, who died of Helen Keller disease.

With the secrecy surrounding his death and treatment at Mayo it's pretty widely understood that he died from tertiary syphillis which wasn't treatable until after penicillin was commercially available in the late 40s. Baseball players were the rock stars of their time and they farked everything everywhere they went. Whores were even more common than they are now and even in the most conservative of towns everybody knew where the whore houses were. If you've ever skied Snowbird they have a run that is so wide and so easy that it was named for the main stretch of whorehouses in Salt Lake City at the time it was planned in the 60s and it is still called Second West Second South on any Snowbird maps.
