LineNoise: Link

Already been debunked and proven to be a hankerchief.

I see the screencap there but I cannot find that in the video linked via your own link there. It says at 1:26:35 but it's not there that I can see.

Honestly even if he did bring notes he didn't say anything new. Just the same smokeshifting bullshiat he always feeds out, like the 12 million jobs that are going to happen no matter who is elected but he is happy to take credit for without explaining how he plans to do it in any worthwhile detail. I'm still amazed that people can take this man seriously after he equated starting a VC as pulling himself up by the bootstraps like any blue collar American.

Great Janitor: He openly places it on the podium, not caring who sees it. If this was the note cards that so many anti-Romney people want it to be, wouldn't someone during the debate asked about it?

I'm pretty sure the members of the audience directly in front of him would have been able to see it as well, considering he wasn't completely behind the podium when he started pulling it from his pocket.

2012-10-05 12:42:40 PM
It's not like anyone who wasn't sure who they were going to vote for was watching the debate.

Romney felt so bad that he is going to allow Obama to use his secret speech weapon next debate

Gunny Highway: Why cant they have notes? Why shouldnt they have notes?

Who cares if they have notes?

Mentioned upthread, but they can't bring notes with them because they need to demonstrate to the American public that they understand the subject(s) at hand and know what they're talking about.

For everyone arguing that the the hanky was too bulky, obviously you don't know what 4,000 threadcount Armani custom hankerchief, made with Burmese albino spider silk cleansed in the tears of children orphaned by parents who died because they lost their health care due to their jobs being outsourced by Bain Capital, weighs.

alphalemming: skykid: alphalemming: One man on the stage was looking down at his podium all night. It wasn't Romney.

This isn't a "gotcha" for the left, it's a pathetic reach that only resounds in the echo chamber. Obama clearly didn't bring his A game and will bring it next time because his second term is riding on it.

Yeah because that 96% according to Nate Silver isn't safe enough.

Nate Silver has it at 87.1 percent, not a huge difference, but on the left his comments state on Oct. 5 : "This might be bad for business - but you probably ought not to pay too much attention to the numbers you see in the right-hand column of this blog over the next day or two."

If you must snark, let it be accurate snark...

I'm referring to the "now cast" which is at 97% and I don't expect it to go down that much since most of the post debate polls have shown Romney getting a bounce of 1-2 points.

HORSERACE!

AGREED. I am a democrat and admit Romney had a better showing. I don't give a flying fark if he had notes or not. Obama was flat and seemed indifferent. Obama has 2 more debates left to make up for it.

It should be exciting

I'm sure you can get them off craigslist or ebay.

Hale-Bopp: kimwim: Why would he have put a hanky on the table? That would have been weird. And a hanky isn't so large, with such heft. He is a lying sack of shiat, through and through.

THIS.

It landed on the podium dead flat and with weight. Veeeeerry interesting.

You two sound like folks that don't own $80.00+ handkerchiefs.

Seriously, go check out some really expensive cloth hankies and see how heavy they are, then fold one up and toss on a surface.

I dislike Romney as much as anyone else with an ounce of common sense and less than a million in the bank but I don't see what the fuss is here. The dude had a piece of cloth in his pocket.

Got to say that was skill by romney, having both notes and a handkerchief in his pocket - that way he can deny it AND cheat all while breaking the rules anyway.

2012-10-05 12:46:56 PM

Johnson: The handkerchief contained his notes and was rather obviously used as an alibi for later when he got caught.
Who the hell takes a HEAVY handkerchief out of their pocket and tosses it on the podium as soon as they get there?
When he tossed it onto the podium it landed like a deck of cards wrapped in .... a handkerchief.

Anyone else would have left it in their pocket , reached into their pocket when they "needed" it, wiped their face, blew their nose, whatever, then put it back in the pocket.
Nobody puts a handkerchief out on the podium in advance.
Unless they want to hide something in it.

That's debate prep.

Odd. My debate teachers told me under no circumstances put your hands in your pockets. So, I always put my kleenax, pen, keys, ect. on my podium before I give opening or closing arguments to this very day. I won't even wear jewelry I might tinker with. You will play with things on your clothing or in your pockets. Jingling change *shrudder* How many times have I watched an attorney distract a jury to hate him simply because he can't stop jingling change in his pocket. You won't fiddle with something on the podium. You leave it there till you need it.

Gunny Highway: Why cant they have notes? Why shouldnt they have notes?

The rules - agreed to by both parties - say they can't bring notes to the debate. They can write them during the debate, but they can't bring them in.

No props, notes, charts, diagrams or other writings can be used by the candidates; however, they can take notes on the type of paper of their choosing. The candidates cannot ask each other direct questions, but can ask rhetorical questions. The candidates cannot address each other with proposed pledges. Each candidate can use his own makeup artist. No candidate is allowed to use risers or any other device to make them look taller. The Coin Toss: At least 72 hours before the first debate, there will be a coin toss on the order of questioning and closing arguments.

It's no Watergate. But if both of the following are true:

1) that Romney agreed not to bring notes, and
2) that Romney brought notes anyway, then

it objectively follows that this is a minor scandal reflecting poorly on Romney's character. If true, reasonable voters will hold against him the fact that he dishonored a fairly important contract to cheat during a debate.

It is far more natural and likely to take a handkerchief from your coat pocket as you need it, casually, than lay one out on a podium before the debate starts for no apparent reason.

And now we see that Romney in fact agreed not to bring notes. Therefore, the only issue remaining is whether Romney in fact brought notes. If he did, then reasonable observers will agree that Romney dishonored an important contract to cheat during the debate, and that this in turn reflects in a small but consequential way on his moral fitness for the presidency.

But, the camera crew saw what he did. So if he were note cards and the camera man saw it, what's stopping him from saying something? If I were the camera guy at a debate and one of the candidates openly threw note cards onto the table, I would be facebooking and tweeting that instantly. I would be known as the guy who clearly caught a presidential candidate cheating. You can't buy that kind of fame.

Absolutely hysterical!! What will be the next excuse?

/don't worry so much, it's just one debate. Obama's still way ahead.

Callous: Watched it several times. It's either many sheets of paper folded or a folded handkerchief. It moved more exactly like cloth when he tossed it on the podium.

FTFY, because it was cloth and he used the hanky several times. I have little use for Mittens, but making stupid shiat up about him serves no adult purpose.

You people are so ridiculous.

Watch the video.

It's a handkerchief concealing something.

In all seriousness it's not "liebral flailing", I openly admit Romney won the debate big time, but if you can't tell that the kerchief is simply being used as a visual and rhetorical ally you MIGHT just be less intelligent than average, and surely less perceptive.

/Thanks.
//I know because I've sold a lot of pocketsquares in my day (Tip Top Tailors for years and years). (teh funnies). Not really (though I did sell an awful lot of pocket squares and have written articles on how to fold them in a variety of ways), I could tell because I'm not a brainwashed idiot who thinks that Romney is above this sort of tactic (win at all costs, ethics be damned) and it's clear that he's trying to conceal it from any conceivable angle.

2012-10-05 12:55:44 PM
Mitt is kind of a magician. He can make lies out of thin air.

2012-10-05 12:55:45 PM
Thanks for whoever correctly identified the hanky. It certainly did look like a 8.5x11 piece of paper folded over twice, but if he pulled the hanky later on from the podium I think this is a done deal. No funny business.

The reason the idea took off at first because of GWB and the obvious wire he wore in his debates. The Democrats were expecting it. I actually thought Romney did fine in the debates and Obama seemed lackluster. It was a win for Romney, but not a big one due to all of the lies he told. I do think we can all agree that Jim Lehrer totally screwed up. He couldn't control the debate, he asked softball questions, and let one candidate (Obama) have more time than Mitt. They should have countdowns as well as running 'talk times', giving the candidate that spoke less a chance to balance it out at the end. Obama wasted too much time on pleasantries and not enough time attacking his opponent. How do you spend 60 minutes talking about taxes and not ask about Mitt's tax returns?

1) This is dumb. Romney has been in politics for years, and he's prepped for debates many times. It's easy to believe that, when everyone said the fate of his campaign was hanging on his performance, he worked hard and had a good night as a result. This whole line of attack makes it seem INCONCEIVABLE that Romney could have a good night without cheating, and that isn't the case.

2) Given that Obama wasn't aggressive in his efforts to counter Romney's attacks, the fact that Romney may have had notes doesn't make a damn bit of difference.

2012-10-05 12:56:43 PM
Ok - it's a handkerchief. He needs it because he is sweating like a whore in church due to all of the lies he tells. Case solved.
