dastardly in a real life quote, amazing...feel bad for the skater, the coach essentially threatened his olympic spot. of course he shouldn't have done it, but the coach really really needs to get the fark out now if this is true.

Ban the skater and coach for life. You cant let crap like that stand. If it goes deeper ban the US speedskating team from the next olympics if need be. Id much rather see the US lose badly than win like that.

DNRTFA, but caught the story on NPR this morning. According to the skater if he had refused he would have lost his shot at the olympics. As an anonymous guy on the web I'm sure you would have done the right thing and walked away from your dream.

Sometimes it actually is regarded as better. The IOC isn't always able to actually obtain those medals they strip from DQ'ed athletes. Once in a while someone just up and refuses to hand it over.

And being denied the chance to compete? Well, ask Marty Glickman how well he handled being bumped off the relay team in Berlin.
