Dwindle: 44 continuous months of over 8% unemployment, then all of a sudden the sun comes out a month before the election.
What a fraud.

Linear time is complicated.

Lol. Yay for people leaving the workforce. This is the economy Obama always imagined!

Debeo Summa Credo: This is HUGE for Obama. Well, it won't really boost him but a bad jobs report coming right after the debate would have been terrible for him.

actually, the fact that the unemployment rate is lower than when he took office, and that there are more people working today than when he took office is pretty huge.

GAT_00: So unemployment is now lower than when he took office. There go a swarm of GOP talking points.

Unemployment is lower due to more and more people giving up looking for a job.

Plus, I don't trust the government or believe it is "for the people". Just like this propaganda - jobless rate lowers a month before elections! Oooooo! Didn't expect that one!

/Not voting Obama, not voting Romney - I'm voting for the armed revolution that's sure to come as our "leaders" f*ck us over more and more.

//And if you think an armed revolution is crazy? You (the royal you, not you personally) have a short memory, friendo - a mere 230 years ago WE had an armed revolution against our current government - the English government. Don't think history can't repeat itself.

The funny thing is that the rate might have gone down because of some quirk in how they count the numbers.

But since the talking points were misleading in the first place, I really don't care.

Yes...when 800,000 people stop looking for work and their unemployment runs out...the unemployment rate will drop. If dems/libs were more honest they'd look deeper into it and admit that the 7.8% is very skewed to reality.

2012-10-05 09:28:11 AM

Pumpernickel bread: but there just can't be a meaningful drop in unemployment when we are producing less than 200k jobs a month.

Or you know, you could read the friggin' report and see what's going on. It's not that complicated, really. Link to the actual report from the farkin' bureau of farkin' labor statistics.

NateGrey: Really good news. All week people economists were expecting the worse. Especially with the claims jump last week.

Yes, this is very suspicious. Remember what happened in 08 the moment McCain and Palin went ahead in the polls? Does anyone think that (the financial crisis) was a coincidence?

I remember when Soros said "pull it" which was the signal to pull the plug on the economy just to win the election.

Pumpernickel bread: Grand_Moff_Joseph: Pumpernickel bread: Not enough jobs are being produced to put a dent in the unemployment numbers, so this is actually an indicator of something worse - in the past month, thousands of Americans have given up hope of finding a job and just stopped trying.

Um, you may want to double check Dusk's post a couple of entries above yours. Labor force participation is actually up.

Still, even if you're right in the end, 9/10 people only care what the top line number is - not what the math is behind it.

Those numbers just don't jibe. Can't say it is all Obama's fault. He had little to do with the cause of this, but there just can't be a meaningful drop in unemployment when we are producing less than 200k jobs a month. The only thing that could explain it is immigration slowing down and maybe emmigration ramping up

Or, you know, a revision of previous months.

Possibly. Keep in mind that the baby boomers are retiring in waves, which also shrinks the total raw workforce. In theory, the participation rate may tick up over time by simple senior citizen attrition.

"Among the marginally attached, there were 802,000 discouraged workers in
September, a decline of 235,000 from a year earlier. (These data are not
seasonally adjusted.) Discouraged workers are persons not currently looking
for work because they believe no jobs are available for them."

I see you didn't read the article. Actually the truth is " hundreds of thousands of Americans have given up hope of finding a real job and took part-time jobs instead". It sucks, but its better than unemployment.

david_gaithersburg: Wow, upon actually looking at the report these numbers really suck. They had to add restatements from prior months to the current month in order for it not to look like a complete disaster. The reality is that the current month was short the 200k jobs needed to keep up with the rate of new people entering the work force. But hey, keep chugging that kool aide my leftist friends.

Uhh revising estimates, sometimes drastically, has always been done. There just isn't enough time to process hard numbers in order to get the most accurate report out as possible. You can generally choose two of accurate, precise, and fast. The first report is accurate and fast but with a huge error that most people who regularly follow this stuff know about. They increase the precision as time goes on and you can get more data, such as tax data from the IRS, to really get a clearer picture of what happened. The fact that past revisions are going in the right direction is unambiguously good news.

I have a question:

So we added 114,000 jobs.
But the number of unemployed people dropped by 456,000.

So, what happened to the other 342,000 people that aren't unemployed but apparently didn't get jobs?

The Muthaship: AirForceVet: GAT_00: So unemployment is now lower than when he took office. There go a swarm of GOP talking points.

I completely concur. I'm relieved too. The MSM saying Mittens won the debate because he bullshiated the best was surreal. Romney even quoted the GOP mantra during the first debate: Repeat the lies over and over again until they believe the lies.

Like the lie that 7.8% is lower than 7.6%?

Unemployment was 7.8% for January 2009. It would be pretty lame to attribute that to Obama since he wasn't even sworn in until 3 weeks into the month. The Feb 2009 unemployment rate was 8.3% (wow, what a big jump... something really awful must have been going on then)... it is currently 7.8% and trending down.

actually, it's the opposite. more people are participating in the workforce.

try another talking point. how about comparing U3 under bush to U6 under obama. i'm sure people won't notice.

2012-10-05 09:31:04 AM
The AM talk radio guy was hoping for higher unemployment this morning because it would hurt Obama. That's the GOP in a nutshell, screw over everyone else so you can get what you want.

2012-10-05 09:31:05 AM
I'm very critical supporter of President of Obama, mainly because I think the Republicans are just plain slave masters in training. But even I can do simple math.

When Obama became President, unemployment bottomed out at around 16%. He said he would get it to 6%. Every week I watch the Sunday morning bobblehead shows and they're all like

- unemployment is still over 10% - OMG!! WHARGARBLE!!1111!
- unemployment is still over 9% - The President is lying scum.
- unemployment is still over 8.6% - the sky is falling, Obama has not kept his promise!
- unemployment is at 8.45 - The President is full of shiat.
- unemployment is at 8% - why can't this President get it together? What is his problem? He's not working for the economy at all!

Now that unemployment is at 7.8%, I expect their heads are just gonna explode and they're going to declare him an unpatriotic traitor who hates America....

....oh wait

But that works too. Timing was off at *both* ends of that post. It's kind of impressive.

1/20/2009: 7.8%
Unemployment Rate Change: 85.71% increase

Obama
1/20/2009: 7.8%
Currently: 7.8%
Unemployment Rate Change: 0.00% increase

Comparing unemployment rate fluctuation when their budgets first took place

Bush
1/01/2002: 5.7%
12/31/2009: 9.9%
Unemployment Rate Change: 73.68% increase

Obama
1/01/2010: 9.7%
Currently: 7.8%
Unemployment Rate Change: 19.59% decrease

You arrive 4 minutes after I summoned you. Well done.

I'm sure I will post the charts again and again in the next couple of weeks or so...

I wish Obama would have stop Romney's BS talking point about unemployment being over 8% for 40 straight months (or whatever the month amount was) and say, "while that might be true, it is a misleading statement. Unemployment has been trending down for the last 20 months or so. We had 10% at one point."

If he mentioned something along those lines, then most people would have seen that as a good thing.

I love this I'll informed analysis from leftists. Keep thinking the tax policy center is the only economist group working. Keep saying they didn't utilize assumptions Romney never made. Keep pretending they didn't already walk back their original analysis when aei pointed out glaring issues with their report. It makes one look silly. Multiple economists have already shown how the tpc report was flawed. Liberals know there are more than one set of economists in the world, right? You don't get to pick the own that agrees with you and claim all others are liars that is selection bias.

2012-10-05 09:34:25 AM
7.8% is only a good thing for the obamorons that think dear leader is doing a good job. To the millions of middle class workers that are still out of work those numbers stink. obama promised 5.6% three years ago. He either lied or didn't understand the how bad the economy was suffering.

The debate proved obama doesn't have a clue. Even the obama friendly media couldn't spin his stammering. Romney knows how to fix this. The only people that can't see through obamas failures are the rubes on the left.

U.S. jobless rate at 44-month low.

Also, Jack Welch is an idiot.

Obama built that.

Actually, if people want more jobs, jjust buy more stuff made in America. The president has far less to do with job creation than the American shopper. I bought an American-made extension cord. Best money I ever spent on tools. Could have bought narrow-gauge, Chinese slave labor made crap but I'm glad I didn't.

Workforce participation rose over the same period. IF you wanna claim he's lying, stick with the actual falsehood, which is Unemployement in January 2009 was 7.6%, and 7.8% is not lower than 7.6%.

Countering falsehoods with falsehoods? Just reinforcing people's opinion about you. You don't wanna go the way of a certain internet dentist, do you?
