That's the topic of office discussion this AM.

That Medlen stat is the one that my baseball buddies have been discussing since Wed. evening.

Cubs fan?

I dare you to find more than 5 people in St. Louis who think 12 in '12 is possible. I'm just glad the Cardinals ended up over .500 with a rookie manager, no Pujols and a ton of injuries.

Indeed, there are worse fans in baseball.

What do you hate about Cards fans, specifically? The fact that we're rabidly passionate about a historic, respected, winning franchise in a "small market"? The fact that players, managers, and coaches around the league consistently regard Cards fans as some of the most dedicated, educated (about the game), classy fans out there?

Or is it just the fact that a flyover city in a flyover state has a good team? If you wanna hate on fans, hate on Yankees fans, as least that's fashionable.

Hey subby, can we discuss Orioles/Rangers in there too? Or will there be a separate thread for that one? Or does that game not really matter?

After last season, I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks it's impossible; the difference is believing whether it'll happen or not.

I've only met Cards fans while on vacation since I'm in new england. They gave me a ridiculously hard time for not drinking whatever shiatty beer is brewed there. The ones I saw at a mets game were decked out in fan gear but sat at a bar the whole time, and never went out to watch the game. That was a no-hitter for the mets, so ha.

I think the guy's just fussy 'cause his meth lab blew up this morning.

I'm from Stl, graduated from Mizzou. And the Braves have an "insert insensitive Native-American joke here" coming to them today.

Surely, it can't be over their manager's decades-long lenient stance toward steroids, HGH, and the like. Oh, I know that was an isolated incident....and so was that other one....and that third one, sure, but they were ALL isolated! It's weird how people don't like cheaters, isn't it?

You mean the guy that's been running the team for a year? How long are decades in your universe?

While it's difficult to defend PEDs in baseball, I don't think you can deny that the race between McG and Bonds helped save baseball.

To which other incidents do you refer?

Hudson in game 1. Minor in game 2. Medlen in game 3.

Hudson is the worst pitcher in that stretch.

Canseco in Oakland
McGwire in Oakland AND in St. Louis

And if you think the Cards are the only team guilty of doing this...well, we don't have much else to talk about. Oh wait, you can't possibly because you just mentioned Oakland...so why are you singling out STL?

You don't think so? It's my "global warming" of baseball- we know it affected it in SOME way, we just can't say how or how much. It certainly didn't do BB any harm at the time; they had to wait after the money had been made.

But it still eliminates the possibility of them using him twice. Gio, Jordan, Ross and Edwin are better then the rest of the Braves pitching staff and the Nats should be able to win the 3 games needed. I am also very glad they don't have to go up against Beachy either. The Braves are going to be scary good next year.

Barely, I guess.

But delaying having to face Medlen is at least some bonus to getting the top seed. Although I think the Nats came pretty close to getting a win last time they faced him. The Nats' game 3 starter will be an interesting decision.

If the Braves win tonight, I feel pretty good about Hudson/Minor at home and Medlen on the road. Medlen/Hudson at home seems a bit better, but I'm not sure about Minor on the road in game 3. That first playoff game at home for the Nats is going to suck for whatever team is playing them. Nation's capital, national TV, a flyover, appearance by VP or Prez? Pass....

CipollinaFan: Gio, Jordan, Ross and Edwin are better then the rest of the Braves pitching staff

You're not using the entire staff in a 5 game series...

Hudson/Gio
Minor/Jordan
Medlen/Ross

That's, at least, a split with both teams feeling they have a good shot. As for the rest of the pitching staff....Kimbrel, Venters, O'Flaherty. Six innings from the starter and it's over.

CipollinaFan: I am just glad the Braves are wasting Medlen today rather than saving him for the Nationals.

That's the penalty for being the wild card. You have to burn your best pitcher. Particularly penalizing for the Braves given how lights out Medlen has been.

The only thing I have heard announced for sure is that Frank Robinson will throw out the first pitch.

Minor has impressed me this year. I saw a number of his games when he was at Vandy and he's definitely becoming a big league pitcher, as forecast. But it's the big show now. Another step in his career so it should be interesting to see how he shows.

For me, personally, I had been bitter and almost apathetic following the strike-shortened season. The HR race lit me up. This, obviously, is a personal anecdote and does not reflect the nation as a whole or the sport itself....

I dont hate the Cards fans. People dislike La Russa and claim he turned a blind eye to PED use. That is a reason to dislike a team. Especially when the fans are just so gosh darn nice all the time.

Medlen, Venters and Kimbrel have Nats fans very very concerned.

Nats have to win at least one in Atlanta. Imagine if the Nats lose both games in Atlanta and then have to face Medlen in an elimination game 3.

I agree with everything you said. I think the one-and-done format is a steaming pile of crap, maybe the worst thing that Bud Selig has come up with since deciding the All Star game had to "mean something." But, I like the Braves' chances against the Nationals. That sweep a few weeks ago should have dismissed any notion that the Braves can't handle the Nats.

They are pretty good at doing The Wave. I've seen that quite a few times this season. It's all new for most of DC so it should be an interesting side show.

SlothB77: Medlen, Venters and Kimbrel have Nats fans very very concerned.

I guess most people are figuring Atlanta will move on. I would rather see Nats vs Braves too, just because it's a nice divisional matchup. DC went 5-4 both at home and in Atlanta this year. The two teams know each other really well, and I think they like playing each other. Would definitely draw great TV ratings.

Sure it, and I won't argue that point- but that wasn't his original point. He came right out the the gate with

Mid_mo_mad_man: Fark the Cards! Worse fans in baseball. Hope the 12 in 12 ends tonight.

I'll accept "fark the cards" based on the LaRussa thing, but I took umbrage with "Worse fans in baseball", when that's simply not the case, from an objective standpoint:

Attendance
% of park capacity utilized
Sellouts
Consumption of branded team merch
And anecdotally, the bit I mentioned about players/coaches/managers really liking St. Louis fans, and playing here- STL fans are happy to applaud for the opposing team when they make a great play.

Whatever. Sports arguments are even less rational than political ones.

I am pretty sure it is standing room only. There were 50,000 in the stands for Chipper's last three games, so I've got to believe there will be 50,000 tonight.

Or that on a weeknight, in April, against a crappy team Cardinals fans will still sell out Busch Stadium?
