whidbey: I'm sure this has already been hashed out in the take-a-drink debates thread, but Obama more than held his own.

That's why I view it a Romney victory. The best we can muster is "Obama held his own." I said it before the debate and I stand by it - if you pay attention to reality and facts, Obama should have mopped the floor with Romney. The economy turned around, Romney has no actual policies, Romney wants to tax the middle class and lower taxes for the rich, Romney wants to increase military spending by $2 trillion and so on. That the best we can say is "Obama held his own" is pathetic.

whidbey: But no, instead it's "Obama blew it" like we're all secretly on the Fox News payroll or something.

Just so you know, when Aaron Rodgers has a bad game and I say "Aaron Rodgers blew it" that doesn't mean I'm on the Chicago Bears payroll. This apparently is shocking to you.

It's actually a lot more unrealistic not to expect Obama to treat his opponents with respect and courtesy in a public debate. You also apparently expect him to shoot his entire load in one session. This is only the first debate, isn't it?

Again, what "bad game?" You sound just like a Fox News bobblehead. You're doing their work FOR them. Is that what you want?

lennavan: You're actually legitimately concerned that he broke the rules by bringing in a handkerchief? You think that gained him an unfair advantage or something? Or are you just pouting?

Nah, I'm not concerned. This isn't worthy of the attention it's received, even just from you and I typing about it. It's just Romney, comfortable that the rules don't apply to him. And if I'm pouting it's because I tuned in hoping to watch Bartlet debate Ritchie.

I don't know about him, but I'm just calling it like I see it. I'm not on Team Red or Team Blue; I like Obama, I want him to win, and I am generally liberal, but I really don't see politics as a team sport. I'm not going to sit here and say "Sure, Obama looked great!" when I really don't think he did. I'm not Obama's damn PR guy.

Those of you claiming handkerchief, quit accepting the word of Romney's campaign staff and actually watch the video for yourself with your own eyeballs. Handkerchiefs are nowhere near that stiff, not unless they were starched with adamantium-infused cornstarch.

Also, if it were a handkerchief, why did Romney pull it out so surreptitiously? He waited until the podium was between him and the audience and moderator Lehrer, and pulled it out like a magician palming a coin, very sneakily, complete with misdirection.

Also, why did he return to the podium after the debate, grab something from it, and surreptitiously give it to his son? That, also, is on video. Obama did not return to the podium.

Also, Romney is upper class, and thus knows etiquette, including the proper use of a handkerchief. It is not to be removed from the pocket until it's actually needed, then returned as quickly as possible to the pocket. Some uncultured hick may pull a handkerchief out for later use, but not someone of Romney's socioeconomic class and upbringing.

As for notes, the podiums were previously supplied with pen and paper expressly for that purpose. The candidates were to bring nothing except themselves and their clothes.

Sorry, but the handkerchief excuse simply won't, er, stand up to scrutiny.

Wow. Even the article ends with a Romney getting the last word.

The first debate is the most highly watched of all of the debates. While you did not know that, I'm sure Obama and his campaign did.

Where do I start? He never mentioned the 47% comment. He didn't hammer Romney hard enough on how Romney has zero specifics. He didn't call out Romney on his bullshiat lie about 5 trillion in tax cuts. Obama laid out the facts, Romney replied with bold faced lies and Obama smiled and carried on. I expected him to look Romney in the face and tell him "you're lying." When he smiled and carried on after Romney made these flat out lies, the lies suddenly became truth to a lot of people watching. I think there are a lot of people out there who believe Romney is going to cut 5 trillion across the board in tax rate reductions, increase the military spending by 2 trillion and pay for it in some unknown magical way that does not raise middle class taxes. What way is that? Well shiat, Obama apparently trusted his say so, so who cares.
