If these dogmatic fools weren't so short-sighted, they'd have realized decades ago that informed birth control actions are the single greatest way to reduce unwanted pregnancies, abortions, and in some cases, the rate of children born to parents who cannot adequately care for them.

Yeah... I've always found that hilarious. Old, ignorant white people complaining about blah people while simultaneously denigrating sex education, birth control and abortion.

Stop abortion? There are over 7 billion of us around already, I don't think we really need to shore up the numbers anymore.

I think abortion should be legal until the 48th trimester.

It's not about abortion. It's about those whores having sex with our pure young men.

I was going to post this already, but it's even funnier with your post. Apparently not only are we not overpopulated (we're underpopulated!), but contraception causes abortions. Well, plus it turns men gay.

Of course, that link - while probably safe for work - is not safe for brain cells.

How bout...

You pay for your own birth control if you simply can't control yourself by not having sex if you don't want children.

And quit calling it "free" because until it starts appearing out of thin air with no cost associated with manufacture or distribution, it is not free.

2012-10-05 06:09:39 AM
Proper sex education, access to birth control, paid maternity/paternity leave, strengthening the social safety net...

Things that could *actually* reduce the abortion rate are opposed by the party that makes the most noise about abortion. That should tell you all you need to know.

I thought only Ryan Gosling turned men gay. Hmm. I guess it was all of those artificially-hormoned women around me in the theater when I was watching Drive and Crazy Stupid Love.

But it works out better for the GOP if they turn this nation into a third-world country.

/then they won't have to outsource; they can pay your children $0.15/hour to work in sweatshops here!

Birth control in this study was "free" because it was paid for by those who would rather deal with a small cost now than the larger cost to society later. Kind of like why everyone in this country gets a "free" education.

Sluts and whores use birth control. Taxpayer's shouldn't have to pay for their sinful lifestyles,

Or at least in the US Territory known as the Marianas Islands.

I'm not going to mention Newt's wonderful idea of firing the janitor and forcing low-income kids to clean the schools instead of learning things, since that didn't make the cut on the official Republican Party Platform. But the fact that one of our two major American political parties believes that Americans should work for less than minimum wage is scary.

That would imply the ability to think further ahead that one's next breath. Or in random's case, to think at all.

Don't you think you're being a little unreasonable here? There has to be come common ground between common sense and utter lunacy that we can compromise on.

Has anyone mentioned that they said "monkeys" but showed pictures of chimpanzees? I am wary of any study claiming to be scientific that cannot even identify the animals being studied.

I'm going to watch Animaniacs now because it makes more sense, and likely contains far more factual information.

How to tell the difference

2012-10-05 06:39:23 AM
Accessible education for girls for women, combined with birth control availability, are what determine if a society will progress or stagnate.

Take away either and you will stall to mediocrity. Take away both and you will regress to savagery.

Society definitely works this way - said no one. Ever.

Look - we can't ban sex. People, in general, make bad decisions all of the damned time. Even the most rational person can set aside good decision making when it comes to getting laid. Now, we can either cross our arms and insist people evolve on demand or we can act like intelligent animals and start taking human stupidity into consideration.

The cost of adequate contraception shouldn't be a preventative factor. I've paid for 2 goddamned wars I never supported, tax cuts I've never requested (that bill is on its way), and a crap ton of other things that I had no say in.

There's a societal benefit in providing access to contraception and the cost of that access based on need.

One could argue that those least able to afford contraception are least likely to be able to properly care for a child, ergo the most likely to need it.

No, it's not free.

Call it a taxpayer-funded subsidy for the pharmaceutical companies who sell the pills and the doctors who do the unnecessary exams before they'll hand over a scrip, but don't call it free.

Make the damn pill available over-the-counter - if Mexico and even Iran can figure it out, how hard can it be? Not hard at all, it turns out.

The government making it a pain in the ass for women to take care of their reproductive health: it's okay when done in a bipartisan manner? You women can have your choice but only after the AMA gets to wet its beak? Fark that, fark the holy-roller GOP, and fark the statist Democrats for being in the pocket of the medical industrial complex.

ox45tallboy: Birth control in this study was "free" because it was paid for by those who would rather deal with a small cost now than the larger cost to society later. Kind of like why everyone in this country gets a "free" education.

In other words not free at all. The fact that people think they are getting a free education is also a small part of the reason why education in this country is such crap. People who think things are free don't appreciate them nearly as much. People that understand the costs of things appreciate them even if they are not paying for them themselves. Additionally comparing education, which is a necessary thing, with birth control which is associated with choice in behavior is stupid.

erik-k: Don't you think you're being a little unreasonable here? There has to be come common ground between common sense and utter lunacy that we can compromise on.

It's unreasonable to think people should control their own urges if they don't want children? It's unreasonable to expect them to pay for their own birth control? People are so cheap and irresponsible that unless you get somebody else to pay for it they won't use birth control?

Apparently its unreasonable to ask people to do things for themselves now.

Bontesla: Society definitely works this way - said no one. Ever.

Look - we can't ban sex. People, in general, make bad decisions all of the damned time. Even the most rational person can set aside good decision making when it comes to getting laid. Nobody is proposing a ban on sex or even suggesting it. If you can't control yourself then that's your problem. What you're basically saying is that 'people can't control themselves and shouldn't be expected to take responsibility for themselves so unless we do it for them... these problems will result'.

bionicjoe: ...we just fix all the problems by telling everyone to fix all the problems.

A lot of problems can be solved by telling people to take responsibility for themselves.

Don't think about it as someone getting a benefit on your dime. Think of it as an investment. You (indirectly) pay a bit up front, and in return you get:

- Decreased need for welfare and other related benefits
- Decreased costs for insurance companies and hospitals
- Decreased rates of teen pregnancies
- Decreased rates of child abuse/neglect
- An improvement in public education, as not only will the number of children born decrease, but children will tend to be born more to families who are ready and willing to have children, increasing the chances these children will do well in school

Aside from the minimal amount you would pay in taxes to support this, THERE IS NO DOWN SIDE! None! Zero! Society would only benefit.

2012-10-05 07:18:45 AM
Why do we have to stop abortions?

It's a legal procedure and it's not like there's a lack of humans on the earth.

Hell, we should be encouraging it.

You know, that or educating the populace and handing out birth control like it was Halloween candy.
