Rube Goldberg style gadgets aren't meant to be efficient. Instead they're overly complex and convoluted, which in turn makes them fun to watch.

Parkour itself seems like a huge waste of energy. Makes sense to couple it with Rube Goldberg devices.

Parkour is remarkably similar to capoeira from a functional perspective. Both are classified as "sports", and given an ornamental dimension to hide the fact that they are essentially ways to beat up/escape from groups of police.
