Yet another thing where Romney believes one thing one moment and the complete opposite the next. It's obviously worked well for him in the type of business world/environment where he made millions no matter the consequences to others, but it does not work so well in leading the government of the people, by the people, for the people. Does this man have any core beliefs other than "I want money and power"?

"It's not elegantly stated, let me put it that way. I was speaking off the cuff in response to a question. And I'm sure I could state it more clearly in a more effective way than I did in a setting like that."

Then what exactly were you trying to say Mitt? I think you said exactly what you meant to say. You regret it now only because it revealed you to be the elitist jerk that you are.

If he actually thought he could state it more clearly and effectively, he would have done so in the time since it came out. So far he's offered no alternative explanations

I'm shocked that you would make some milquetoast apology and appear genuine and sincere on a cupcake interview on Fox News. I'm also shocked that you would be arrogant and divisive in a closed-door fundraiser when you figured nobody would find out what you said.

Shocked and awed.

Romney : "You want me to reduce the deficit? sure, i will do that if you elect me. You want me to make more jobs? sure, 12 million more if you elect me. You want lower taxes? sure, top rate will go down to 28% if you elect me."

Obama : "Are you going to tell us how you plan to do this?"

Romney : "Sure, if you elect me."

This is the Etch-A-Sketch thing again. He won the debate by feigning ignorance on everything he's talked about for the past year ($5T? Where'd you get that? I love everything about the ACA, I would just implement it at the state level and not federally. I don't want to cut taxes for the rich? What are you talking about?) and the base didn't go screaming into the night. So now his campaign is telling him he can afford to go more moderate. The base is evidently locked up and he can now concentrate on appearing more centrist.

And you know what? It'll probably work. The base will never vote for Obama, especially this late in the game. This is their new tactic to attract that mystical Undecided Vote. Will 5 weeks of the "Kindler, Gentler Romney" be enough, though? Doubtful. Also, the undecideds can't be THAT stupid that they'll suddenly forget a year's worth of campaigning. And you know Obama's ads will be blasting him for flip-flopping AGAIN.

They are now using the Scott Walker method to get elected. It works. Say anything to get elected, then screw 'em. Walker got elected in Wisconsin by promising to create 250000 jobs with a secret invisible plan that nobody was allowed to see. Hell, 250K jobs aren't created nationwide, it was impossible, but Walker promised it. People believed him and voted for him and of course we have jobs lost. Then during the recall, he pulled it out again, saying that he jobs would come "just after the recall" and people believed again. Instead Wisconsin is a giant ball of failure and is among the lowest in the country for job creation.

It works. You say anything, no matter how outrageous, then screw em once you are elected. It is almost impossible to defend against, the secret plan can't be critiqued because there are no details on how it would work and the candidate promises whatever you want to hear.

It's obvious Mitt is back in "moderate" mode. The funny thing is, I think he's finally figured out how to turn his liability into an asset and use his opportunism to his advantage.

This could help him. The Obama campaign better adapt to this quickly.

Totally horrifying to see Romney so in control of the mindless masses of the GOP. He knows them way to well and is playing them like a deck of cards or a game of Chess or whatever game analogy you want to make. He knows at this point he has the base locked up and no matter what direction he heads, he only needs to make sure to add one tiny thing to all of his speeches, "Obama is BAD!" and the crowd will love it. He is tacking back towards the center to appease the undecideds who are just tuning in and the damn sheep of the GOP still fawn over him as if he is their candidate of choice without so much as blinking at the fact that he is now ditching the same convictions that originally won their interests. I knew the far right GOP had problems but this takes the cake... No convictions, just a petty desire to win at all costs.

2012-10-05 11:23:13 AM
I have to admit, I never thought I'd see Romney run as a Massachusetts liberal. At this rate, he'll be hitting Obama from the left in a week.

Unfortunately, the technique works.
Walker has even taken to spinning the jobs numbers to count "jobs created". For example, if two people lose their family supporting jobs, and one entry level minimum wage job starts during that same period, that is a Walker "job created", jobs "created" is now 1., not -1. We call those "WalkerJobs".

I hoped a senior Republican would come out and do the right thing by disavowing Romney's "47%" comments and saying just how wrong they were, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised it was Mr Etch-a-Sketch himself.

2012-10-05 11:23:45 AM
I like how he waited long enough for his supporters to come up with contorted defenses for the statement before pulling the rug out from under them. I'm sure they're thrilled about that.

2012-10-05 11:24:06 AM
Well Mr Romney, I see you haven't been employed for six years and refuse to turn over your financial information so we can do a thorough background check. I'm sorry, but our HR department has concluded that despite your impressive resume you carry to much risk to be hired.

We suggest you get a job at Burger King and pay all your taxes and other outstanding balances so as to build up a history of personal responsibility like the REST OF AMERICA DOES!

This is smart, take the mandate you got with the conservative base and move to the center away from them while they are too happy about the debate to notice or care.

Romney had his reversal on the 47% prepared for the debate so that if Obama mentioned 47 Romney could try to fluster Obama with yet more repudiation of himself in his mad dash toward the center.

I think Obama was right to play it cool and not personally attack Romney because that meant that all of Romney's reversals were just Romney responding to himself.

Since he couldn't use the line then he gets someone to ask him what he would have said if Obama had brought it up.

You know how they keep talking about a campaign reboot but it never seemed to happen? They were having technical issues for a while but just before the debate they finally got Mitt successfully rebooted. The only problem is that they had to use the boot disk from his gubernatorial campaign.
