brantgoose: Anybody ever read Flatland?
DemoKnite: I have to pay a few grand for an MRI, but fruits and vegetables are getting this treatment?
leakybucket: brantgoose: Anybody ever read Flatland? First thing that occurred to me on seeing this. It's been a while, but there was a scene in Flatland where the sphere does raise & lower through through the 2d plane, right?
brantgoose: Cool.Anybody ever read Flatland? It's a mathematical fantasy about other dimensions--one, two, three, four, etc. It is public domaine and easy to read online for free or download, not to mention the cheap Dover edition (a thin paperback). I recommend it to every one who isn't already familiar with it as it is very clever and accurate--it even portrays how houses and social status might work in a two-dimensional world of plane figures. This is exactly what fruits and vegetables would look like to a dweller in the second dimension as they passed through your two-d word. I read an EC comic story about a visitor from the 4th dimension (which is really time, but you know what they meant--a fourth dimension of space) and it was based on sound mathematics. The hero trapped a fourth dimensional creature by spearing it, preventing it from escaping back into the fourth dimension. The Canadian writer, Dewdney, who writes on computers, science and mathematics has continued the thinking of the author of Flatland with some mathematical fantasy of his own.The cucumber is funny, and the broccoli is like a little fireworks display. The banana gives you a vague idea of what the MRI of a penis would look like.
