Nor was the original house. Isn't it kind of a well known fact that the guy lied his ass off to sell a book and then a movie? The guy spent months studying demonology to make his story seem legit. Even if you believe in haunted houses, this one is a hoax of the highest regard.

And is there some kind of law that says you can photo the house head on? Or did the article just not want the fact that some previous owner renovated the house decades ago to remove the trademark house design?

Will-Mun: Seriously, if the dude had just written the story, as it was, and then told his audience that he used his family and the house they lived in's history of brutal murder as a springboard for a fictional story, it probably still would have been a smash hit.

I can tell you right now there is one way to make me completely lose enthusiasm for any supernatural based horror movie. "Based on a true story."

Depends on your perspective. It was based on a true story -- the story of the DeFoe family, which was the springboard for the fictional account of what supposedly happened to the Lutz family.

I read that book when I was young. Way too young. Maybe 11 years old, give or take.

It scared the LIVING SHIATTERS out of me for, I reckon, well over a year. Could hardly bear being in a room by myself.

But then I found out it was complete hogsh1at. It was one of those seminal "innocence lost" moments. Why would someone would lie about something like that??????? Soon to find out the whole farking world is made up of people telling lies.

That's what conflicts me so much about Amityville... I actually really enjoy the story. I liked the movie, even the Ryan Reynolds remake. The sense of just complete and utter total oppression as the house lays into the family and corrupts the father. The way it starts off small, and gradually just grows into a nightmarish terror that the family has no choice but to just flee. No exorcist, no last minute calming of the spirits that were once wronged. Just run.

That's probably why Paranormal Activity is my favorite horror movie.

But then it's a hoax. It's not just the fact that ghosts aren't real, this man knowingly concocted a story in order to ride the newish paranormal wave that was cropping up in American subculture. And seeing how much it pisses me off, how much must it anger people who actually believes in ghosts? So what do I do? How can I watch the movies with a genuinely good story without having that nibbling sensation in the back of my head telling me "some scumbag made this with the sole intent of getting rich." Pretending ghosts are real is fun in fiction, but you try and get your reality mixed in with my fantasy, and we're just gonna end up with a blended mess of foul smelling bullshiat and lies.

I don't believe in ghosts, but...

I used to be a photographer, mainly for real estate agents and property managers. I was sent to make a virtual tour of a house an older part of town. Just a nondescript 19th-Century 2-story on a fairly busy residential street.

I was scared from the moment I walked in. I had this feeling of dread, like someone was always just about to walk into the room. I set up my tripod in various rooms and shot as fast as I could and got the hell out of there. I was grateful I didn't have to shoot the basement. One room upstairs especially gave me the willies. "This is where she died," I thought.

I've never been that afraid of a place. The property manager said he had had a hard time finding a renter, though the price was reasonable and the house was in good condition, well lit and otherwise attractive and a lot of potential renters had looked at it. I told him about the creeps it gave me, and he said he had the same experience. "This is where she died."

He figured there was just something inherently unsettling about the house. I had to agree.

Years later, I read about how infrasound can have that effect on people. (Google it.)

Now, it all makes sense. The place was empty, had hardwood floors, central heating and was probably just a big infrasound chamber.

Though that doesn't explain why we both thought "This is where she died." A lonely old woman in a bathrobe whose family had left her. She died alone in there.

But, nah, it was just infrasound. I like ghost stories, and I have a good imagination.

Okay, let's clear this up.....

This is the same house today.

The one for sale in the article is the one they used in the movie for exterior shots. It had nothing to do with the Lutz's. So even if hauntings were real, the one for sale wouldn't be the one haunted. In other words, this is a non-story.

And it's since been moved, and doesn't look like the house in the movie because that was just a facade for the movie, so....
it's just some house?

The bleeding walls might be a deal breaker, however.
