I'll bet many of those concerned people drone on at soirees and political events about how we need to help the downtrodden. A great many love humanity in the abstract, not in noisome reality outside their expensive condos.

E5bie: foxyshadis: GratefullyAlive: I know Panera....

I was the ONLY baker to GM in Saint Louis...

Panera is a mirror game...start thinking people!

It only Looks healthy!

that is all....

You mean a multinational corporate chain's food isn't actually created by farm wives picking and milling their own grains onsite while artisan bakers pull it out of the oven just as you order it? Who'd have thought. "It's not poisonous" and "tastes better than Wonder Bread" is all I'm expecting for the rare visit to Panera.

/Olive Garden breadsticks are also the only edible thing there; it's hard to fark up baked goods when the recipe is tightly controlled.
//Homemade bread can be one of the world's tastiest creations, but I have no patience for kneading.

A mixer with a dough hook could knead it for ya, or a bread machine (but YMMV quality varies).
I like kneading dough. It's like giving a sensuous massage to a sweet, quiet person you can eat later.

I make bread frequently. As far as I'm concerned, a dough hook and a powerful mixer are essential. I don't beat my clothes on rocks, slaughter my own hogs, nor get out of my dadgummed chair to change the channel on the teevee, and I'm not going to knead bread by hand.

People were biatching about this before it even opened. I live a bit further north on Broadway but I've been there. It was fine. The homeless wackos have always been there, it's NIMBY plain and simple.

There are homeless people in.... *gasp*.... the third largest city in the nation?!??!

Sheesh, people.  I lived in the 'burbs of Chicago for 30+ years.  Went to school and worked in downtown Chicago for many years.  Its part of life.  Give them a buck or two or ignore them.  Its not that hard.  Only once did a homeless person actually acost me when I ignored him.

And it was actually kinda funny.  I passed him by, no eye contact.  He followed me yelling "What, are you farking depressed or something?!?"

"Men can starve from a lack of self-realization as much as they can from a lack of bread."

How DARE the poors come into MY neighborhood and buy BREAD!!!!!! Why don't the poors go back to their poor neighborhood and buy their poor bread? They scare my shiatzu!

i upped my meds-up yours: Why actually change the name of the store with a big "we care" sign? Makes it look like a PR thing. Just do a stand up sign at the door or posters in windows. Farking American culture, we can't take a shiat without being self-promoting.

Probably because they're trying to say 'hey, this is really intended for people who are having issues'. It's not so much PR as trying to convey exactly what they're trying to do, which isn't really a bad thing to put in a name.

Bread bread.

Their name is silly. It's like naming a place "Lata de Frijoles Beans" or "Jarra de Aqua Water".

kingoomieiii: FTFA: "A crowd of guys won't let you though a sidewalk. That's invasive."

Police have met with community leaders to discuss concerns about homeless people in the area of the Panera Cares, but say there is no proof of a correlation between the restaurant's opening and any increase in crime.

What I'm seeing here is that people are annoyed that they have to encounter and, gasp, be PHYSICALLY NEAR homeless people that they have lived near probably for years. People that aren't actually committing any crimes.

It's a good thing Panera cares, because the people of Chicago Lakeview sure farking don't.

It's an upper-middle-class neighborhood that thinks that part of their high rents or mortgages is the right to never have to see anyone lower-class than them, ever. It's not that far from Boystown, Chicago's remaining (and shrinking) gayborhood, where the Center on Halsted has drawn a lot of controversy because a) it's brought an "undesirable element" to the neighborhood, and an ensuing (and well-hidden) crime wave, or b) a bunch of white male gay yuppies are having the vapors at having to share their sidewalks, for a small part of the day, with LGBT teenagers of color who, unlike most of them, were actually born in Chicago.

If you live in a city within easy distance from public transportation, you are going to have to deal with it.
