Why would some body parts wash up on shore if he's still alive and kickin' somewhere (ha!)? He's dead. Hoping against hope is just prolonging the agony of loss. Declare him dead and let the family grieve. I'd much rather have closure than always wonder.

The coroner is claiming a leg up on the investigation.

If I ever want to disappear forever I'm just going to cut off one arm and one leg and throw them into the ocean

The coroner's office has not declared McHenry dead. But San Bruno police say their investigation is now closed.

WTF? Hey we found some random body parts in the ocean from a guy camping in the woods. That solves that! Case closed!

I daresay the missing person case is closed, but a murder (assuming it's not an accident) case would be opened.

Coastal trails can be very dangerous. I have hiked the west coast trail in BC Canada, and I Know people who were swept out to sea after falling in while crossing a river. The coast guard picked them up but it sucks not knowing what happened to them for the rest of the seven day hike.

Wuh? You mean you were on a hike, and someone in your party got swept out to sea while you were crossing a river...and you continued on with the hike...for seven days?

I guess I don't have the chops to make it in the San Bruno police department. To me, finding a foot would be what I'd consider a CLUE. But they closed the whole case. I suck at this detecting stuff...

It's not like Pacifica is out in the middle of nowhere. There's some nice secluded areas for camping, but you're never more than five miles from someone else. There's tons of cliffs by the ocean out there and it gets windy enough that he could have easily been forced over the edge and into the water if he got too close. The currents are bad enough that you can easily get swept farther out, plus its a migration area for Great Whites that head up to the Farallons for the spring (when he went missing) and summer. I wouldn't be one bit surprised if a shark or two separated some body parts and scavengers did away with the rest. The only other logical explanation is that someone killed him, chopped up the body and threw it into the ocean. Either way, body parts are washing up from someone who disappeared in March from a well populated area. He's a goner.

You don't understand hiking in Canada. It's not like they could have stopped at the river and hitched a ride. Hitched a ride from who? A moose? Canadians know, once you're lost in the forest, you are lost forever, it's just that unpopulated once you're outside the town or village.

I wonder if it was found in a shoe. A Nike sneaker, perhaps. The story doesn't give that detail.

The trail has several cable cars that people take instead of fording the river. The cable snapped as they were traversing.
