Okay, now these farkers need to be purged. Leave nature out of it, you barbaric godfarks

They'd better pray to be burned to death rather than be caught with the match in their hands in Russia. Also, I would guess Mr. Putin won't stop with the guy holding the match. He's going to get medieval on their whole family.

Bad idea guys. Really, really bad idea.

Now there you go, Al Qaeda, using your head finally. There are so many cheap, easy ways to cause havoc. You don't even need to kill anyone. Set a few fires, cut down a few electrical towers, and the rest will take care of itself.

I've been wondering about this sort of thing for a while. If one were going to spread "terror" there are a lot of cheaper and easier ways to do so besides stealing planes and crashing them into buildings. Sure, that sends a big message, but then so does ... a bunch of stuff I just erased because the last thing I need to do is sit here giving assholes new ideas.

It might not be as efficient as earning virgins, though.
Don't they need to die in battle or something to be martyred?

Has Europe, like America, suppressed natural forest fires over wide areas? Could Al Qaeda be doing the ecology a favor by restoring fire to its natural place?

There's a registered voter out there going, "Well, now that I see al Queda is in favor of fire..."

I remember hearing rumors in 2003 about the Cedar Fires in San Diego that people thought it was the work of Al Qaeda, but it turned out to just be a lost dumbass (for at least one of them.) No Al Qaeda.

Still, it seemed like a pretty cost-effective way to cause a lot of chaos. 15 deaths, 2800 buildings burned, and the seventh largest metro area in the US was shut down for days as a result. All because one lost dumbass hunter got lost and started a fire in the middle of fire season while winds were cooking up.

At the time I just remember thinking, what if someone had intentionally done this and coordinated it so that every major city in California had fires start at the same time? What if San Diego, LA, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle and Vancouver all had major fires at once? When wildfires happen those areas typically seem to share resources. What if those resources were all tied up so they couldn't be dispatched to help contain the fires near the other cities?

Terrarsonists?

Honestly, if you bother to understand what it is that terrorist organizations are trying to do, what they're attempting to achieve, the base they're playing to, who they're attempting to influence--you would realize they have NOTHING to gain by setting wildfires in random areas. Terrorist groups have no real desire to, nor can they, inflict serious economic damage on a large scale to major nations. And even if they could, forest fires aren't the way to do it.

Terrorist groups that want to become major players have a strategy, honed by Mao and to a lesser extent the Viet Minh: first create a solid base among your target nation, then establish a shadow government among the base, then destabilize the local government in the target nation(the place where most insurgencies collapse), THEN destabilize the national government. Almost nobody ever gets beyond step three, for obvious reasons. Setting big fires in a region, unless that area is solely dependent on timber exports, isn't going to do much more than annoy the local residents and probably kill your base.

Just another example of the local politicians trying to use terrorists as a means to tighten their own grip on the populace, I'd imagine.

Maybe they hope that if they start enough fires, they can turn Europe into a desert like their homelands?

2012-10-05 12:34:50 AM
We need to start the War on Fire and invade Europe immediately.

Yeah, I've never understood their strategy. As spectacularly horrific as 9/11 was, nothing had me terrified like the DC snipers, and that was just two assholes, a rifle and a Buick.

In linking al-Qaeda to the deadly wildfires, Mr Bortnikov pointed to calls to launch a "forest jihad" by various extremist websites which he said also publish detailed instructions about how and where to best carry out arson.

I loved Forest Jihad in "F Troop".

If we were really serious about ending terror, this is the strategy we'd pursue. Mohammed would think twice if he knew that after he blew himself up we were going to find and kill his entire family.

I mean, if we lived in a different age, we'd carpetbomb every city, village and shack in Afghanistan and Iraq, randomly execute 10% of their men, humiliate their leaders, and sell the terrorists' families into bondage to ensure that our enemies knew we were superserial. But we don't live in that world. That world was struck a deathblow in World War II and perished in Nam.

Hopefully he starts with everyone named Mohammed, and ends when islam in europe is spoken about in a past tense.

Not a bad plan, but how will it be funded?

I believe al Qaeda websites have been suggesting their followers light forest fires since at least April.

It's a bit of a hyperbole to say it's "destroyed". When a HOUSE is destroyed, it's gone. You don't just wait a few years and new houses sprout in its place. LAND itself is not destroyed by fire. The land itself is rocks and dirt and couldn't care less if the plants and buildings above burned. The plants will return, sometimes better off, so this is "184,000 acres of plant setbacks". The BUILDINGS are destroyed. Not "land".

Didn't the Japanese do this duuring WWII? Tied incindieries on ballons and sent them into the Pacific air stream to start forest fires in the western US? Some 1000+ balloons were found in the US. Some as far inland as Wyoming...
