It's because we don't focus on local elections. We're only worried about whether Obama or Romney will win and make sure we're taken care of. Very few people vote in local elections. We see the infinite wave of dumb signs promoting whatever candidate is on the ballot, but we never really dig in to find out WTF is going on locally.

they pay more taxes - property, employment, etc. It's also easier to monitor and control someone if you always know where they are so restauraunts are more attractive to a beauracracy anyway.

In Austin, the smart restaurant owners and chefs have started their own food trucks. Health codes require much prep work to be done in a commercial kitchen, and they already have that, making the overhead of the truck very low.

Also, by stating "such and such truck is by Chef Amazing" it gives both truck and restaurant additional cachet. For example, Paul Qui and the East Side King mini-franchise of deliciousness. It's a win for everyone.

Good point. The closest food truck to us is operated by a local Mexican joint. The food truck is an expansion of that business and is always busy. The restaurants should get it together and compete -- or go out of business.

The East Side King trucks sell good asian style street food for $6 or so. That's fairly expensive for what it is (pork buns etc), but people think "The guy from Uchiko and that TV show", and it seems suddenly like a great deal and sells like crazy. Profit city.

And I don't think you need to be a famous chef, a well known restaurant can easily play the same way. It's silly to complain about it when there's money to be made.

I work in downtown Houston and there's a food truck every other day parked right there in the middle of the HOuston Pavillions.

I believe it's 100% correct: The economic terrorism posed by young gourmet chefs with lower fixed costs to start a business is quite serious, and should not be taken lightly. Here in New York they tried this excuse amongst others. The latest manifestation is that food trucks pose a health risk since they aren't succeptible to the suprise buttsecks health department inspection and grading that the store-fronts are.

But they are. In LA, they have to display their latest inspection grade just like sit-downs do, but I assume that reality is inconvenient when it comes to scapegoating competition.

I have had those twice in my life. Though the ones in Mexico were probably cat tacos I would still happily eat them again. At 2:30 in the morning with about 9 each of beers and tequila shots in your gut there is no better sight than a street taco stand.

I have no idea when that was. I just did contract work for them on their annual menu or menus. I worked for Free Press Houston more often but that's pretty much just a group of my friends.

Maybe it's been about a year or so. I did always like John Nova Lomax's bigger stories. I'm glad Free Press has blown up so much lately. Hopefully they don't end up going the way of Houston Press - which has less and less to do with Houston's point of view (like Chron).

Food Trucks are directly attributed to gastrointestinal mutilation.. so I can fully agree there. I suppose it has to do with the garbage most of them serve. I hope quality keeps going up.
