I prefer Penny Arcade's description of it as an "Arrow-Comparison Engine."

That's how I feel when I see the wall of tobacco behind the counter at every single pharmacy and gas station in the country. Like, seriously? Everyone alive knows this is poison. It's terrible for you, and it isn't cool anymore. Yet, here it is. And look, the guy in front of me is ONLY IN THE STORE to buy them. Why leave the house, dumbass?

How is it possible that anyone in their 30s or below is addicted to tobacco products? They've been known carcinogenic toxins for your entire life.

Bonerfarts and Butt Stallion!

Is it really that good?

I'm still playing Skyrim, Diablo 3, and SWTOR, and I am looking forward to Simcity 5(if anyone has something like it that is a good game besides SC4 w/Rush Hour, I'm all ears).

I'm also waiting for Rift to go full FTP. That was a fun MMO, at least for me.

Although I also need to finish the games I bought last Halloween (Fear DLCs and Fear 2 + DLC)

I noticed you said Diablo 3. Imagine Diablo 3 but first person perspective with literally thousands of weapons/equipment, huge bosses, awesome/hilarious dialogue and shout-outs, pretty damn good main story (compared to Skyrim's less than stellar main story), great co-op, and again it's hilarious. I haven't laughed that much in a game in a while. There's tons of replayability too.

The only reason I'm still playing is because I haven't beaten it yet. It's not like I'm gonna go back and play more once I've finished the story.

Well, except to try a playthrough with the siren.

And zero.

But then, really, I'll be done, and won't play it ever again!

Borderlands 2 is by miles the most fun I've had with a game so far this year. But I'm also an enormous loot whore. So I don't feel like I'm playing it so much-

After reading a bunch of these threads, I picked up the first one a week ago, and it certainly has a "eh, just one more mission" kind of enjoyment. I'm not a huge fan of FPS, but the RPG elements and learning curve (farking skags) make it stand out. I'm still early in the game (just leveled up to 9) but it's a great game. Been using it as a pallete cleanser after rounds of Darksiders 2 but hopefully I can finish it and start B2 before I get Resident Evil 6 and Bioshock: Infinite.

It is a lot of fun. It is a HUGE poke at the genre, and entirely in your face about it. It is not a subtle play; there is NOTHING subtle about this game in the least, and it doesn't even pretend to be anything other than it is. Which is actually sort of refreshing. That's pretty much the joy in it.

9 days after purchase I was up to 63 hours. Ive had to step away from and I think im done. Beat it with 2 different characters and have seen about 98% of the game content.

My buddies are begging me to purchase borderlands but Im just burnt on the endless loot cycle. Dont wanna spend another 60 hours playing a variation of what I just beat myself over the head with.

"If you killed me, then you must be a Bad Ass, so I want you to have my stash..."

Yeah. You KNOW it's a trap, you KNOW it's a burn, and you STILL do it, to loot the corpses of the bastiches who you KNOW will spawn to try to loot your twitching corpse. It is obvious, and so obvious that you go for it anyhow, because there will be a payoff. Sorta. Like tipping a certain buxom bartender. It is a game that keeps you entertained, while fleecing your character, while showering said character with riches and obvious scams that you can pull to farm goodies, and KEEP farming said "glitches" to keep you entertained.

Tiny Tina is also the name of the "World's Smallest Horse" I saw her at the Iowa State Fair and still remember the repeating carnival pitch tape.

"Come on in and see TINY TINA, the world's smallest horse, she's so cute you'll want to put her in your pocket and take her home but don't do that because then everyone else will not be able to see TINY TINA, the world's smallest horse!"

The Warrior is a pretty good loot farm after you defeat him the first time

/Kill yourself, then notice that the shield that kept you from shooting the warrior without getting into the arena the first time is not up. You may now kill the Warrior with narry a kipper scuffed

Borderlands 2, Torchlight 2, and to a lesser degree Diablo 3 are what I call "Pinata Games". You keep hitting something until they burst with the loot the have inside.

I keep thinking I'm bored with it but every time I'm about to save and quit, I look at the clock and think "eh, just one more objective" or "let me try this new gun out real quick." Like the article says, the micro rewards keep you playing. I'm enjoying it just waiting to get to the mayhem parts.

Farm GOD-Liaths (Loot Goon Goliaths are the best kind for this) go to the Firehawk's Shrine or Tiny Tina's area (without Mordekai awake and shooting shiat) and you'll find a ton of them with Varkids everywhere ripe for the slaughter. Let them kill each other and be careful of other super badasses getting in the way.

Not very far along in the game (level 18?), but I'm having fun with Gunzerker. I'm going strait down the middle tree. You get free health and ammo while Gunzerking. With the dual wield, I've got a slag pistol in one hand and a fire SMG in the other. You just have to be prepared to get up close and personal. And the Gunzerker recharge is really slow, so don't pop too early.

If you're doing coop, some class mods do team ammo regen. I have a Siren doing healing and distance attacks, it works pretty well.

Gun Lust is an awesome skill tree if you're a shotgun/launcher fan. You deal a ton of bonus damage, can Gunzerk while bleeding out and every so often you get the epic Money Shot/No Kill Like Overkill combination. A buddy has been running that and simply destroys.

I'm currently running a hybrid version of the Shotgun Ninja build with Zero. Death Blossom+AmbushBackstabxExocute+Be like Water(Jakobs Shotgun)=you don't get back up.

With 4 people we would make sure to kill anything badass around him, let our current play thing clear a zone, and then chain him out to the next fight. It only takes KILLS - it does not matter what he kills. That's why we like Tiny Tina's area because there is an abundant supply of things that he can kill in 1-2 hits...and Chubbies which also drop nice loot.

Really got a lot of love for everybody there. So, as they say around here:

Holy crap. Check his profile. He's not kidding.

I'm not usually one to hero worship, but you're kind of amazing. Big fan of your work, and really EVERYTHING you guys do. And you work with some really awesome people at G'box. I kept running into Randy at the last two E3's, and he was just a straight-up great guy every time. Really tolerant of my fanboy gushery. And whoever the gal is who was working your booth slid me a t-shirt when I told her that this disabled kid I know LOVES Borderlands ardently, and it's the only piece of swag he asked me to get.

Seriously, though...If I PayPal you fifty bucks, will you record my voicemail greeting?

If you like sniping in other games, you'll love Zero. He's all about either extremely close damage or extremely far away damage. I roll with a shotgun and sniper rifle and can handle pretty much any situation (right now at least). He's all about critical hits too. You can get a perk that stacks crit damage up to 999 times.

Holy crap I can actually ask this, if you return.

The way Claptrap (or, uh, you) says "I'm dancin, I'm dancin!" in borderlands 1, is that a deliberate reference to this Hitachi video announcing perpendicular recording?

Since I've been seeing so much positive feedback on this game, how decent is single player? I keep hearing about the multiplayer being so awesome but I hate doing multiplayer stuff. I played BL1 on single player and it was ok, but the gameplay itself seemed fairly repetitive in some areas. Mostly I liked the conversations with some of the NPC's and the comments they'd make here and there. I may actually have the $60 to blow this next paycheck and I can't make up my mind between BL2 and Darksiders 2 plus the DLC.

Better enemies, more guns, much better story.

Although I also need to finish the games I bought last Halloween (Fear DLCs and Fear 2 + DLC)

She also voiced the "Bane" gun type (Finish the Mission - The Bane) - the one that makes you super slow and makes the more horrific screaming noise every time you fire it. It really has to be heard in person im not sure the english language can properly describe that sound beyond the essence of annoying - because there are so many other awesome jokes / lines that you don't want to mute your TV to put up with it....then it starts grows on you...

Back from a quick lunch and what th-- I'M A TF'er AGAIN! Thank you, MaxxLarge! (and check your email)

I'll answer a couple more questions and then need to get back to work.

Dafatone, That's the first time I've seen the Hitachi video. I'm pretty sure we both borrowed from Mel Blanc and Curly Howard. In fact, there's an old Tom & Jerry cartoon from 1943 titled "Baby Puss" that has the same line when they sing "Mamãe eu Quero". I watched all the old Three Stooges shorts and the Warner Bros. and Hanna-Barbera cartoons as a kid (and still watch them now) so I know there was a huge influence there.

scottydoesntknow, thank you for your kind words. What we did for Michael was never meant to be public. We did the eulogy for his funeral at the request of his friend and I believe it was Michael's uncle who sent it to Kotaku. Anyway, it was really personal for both me and Mikey as I was 2 years into recovery from a broken neck and Mikey wrote it while recovering from a recent stroke. With both of us having faced with our own mortality and fortunate enough to still be here, we really wanted to do something to honor Michael and also show our appreciation. Even now I get goose-bumps just talking or writing about it.

Ok...I gotta get back to work. I really just wanted to drop the old Fark "kick out of all these replies" meme and bolt but I'm a sucker for misplaced praise and adoration. :P

scottydoesntknow: Radioactive_Clown: scottydoesntknow, thank you for your kind words.

I don't know how, but Clap-Trap (in both games) is the most annoying character ever, that you just can't hate. That said, I loved playing Clap-Trap's Robot Revolution, solely because it was bloody satisfying to slaughter thousands of Clap-Traps.

dywed88: meat0918: Is it really that good?

I'm still playing Skyrim, Diablo 3, and SWTOR, and I am looking forward to Simcity 5(if anyone has something like it that is a good game besides SC4 w/Rush Hour, I'm all ears).

I'm also waiting for Rift to go full FTP. That was a fun MMO, at least for me.

Although I also need to finish the games I bought last Halloween (Fear DLCs and Fear 2 + DLC)

Did you play Borderlands?

If you did and you liked it, you will like this. It is just Borderlands with everything (except skills) cranked up a notch and an actual story thrown in as bonus.
If you didn't like Borderlands, don't throw your money away.

I did not play Borderlands.

I liked Fallout 3 though. (did not do New Vegas.)

So, I don't get it.

I just got the first one for free on my Playstation Plus account and... well... it's BORING. It's a standard FPS with really basic "missions" and a f♥cking annoying, slow track you must follow when the robot is leading you around. It's like the old rides at a theme park, when you sit in a car and you go through a tunnel and things pop out at you at specific intervals... You experience the scene, and interact a bit, and then the car moves on to the next timed event.

Maybe I'm just spoiled by the true sandboxy goodness of games like Fallout, Elder Scrolls, and Red Dead Redemption (among others), but I am finding Borderland to be a dull slog through a shooting gallery on a track, and little more.

Yes yes, we're all so very impressed with how discerning you are. Truly, your disappointment is the mark of a superior intellect.

/I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome the Borderlands franchise is.

2012-10-04 06:44:16 PM
To clarify: The first one was a grinding "Arrow comparison engine" that had some amusing aspects and was a bit of fun to play one you leveled up enough. It had a loose plot that brings you around the world (and this "following claptrap" thing tells me you've only played the intro level). The DLC stories (not the Underdome, but the other three) are a blast, and much more fun than the core game.

The second game improves on the diversity of weapons (appearance wise, and even in function). New types of enemies, new enemy "personality" types, a greater focus on the amusing aspects of the first, bigger areas before having to load a new map and most of all, it has a much, much more coherent plot, that actually does a good job of making sense of the events of the first game

/Second also had a much more satisfying ending to the core plot

You are experiencing the worst part of both games: the beginning. It gets much better after they let you loose from the "follow Claptrap and watch these scripted sequences" part.

I suggest you finish the tutorial segment before making your decision. But it is very grindy and repetitive, it's like a FPS dungeon crawler (like Diablo) and that is a staple of the genre.

Article link just lead me to the front page when I tried it. Read through the entire thread though, so I'm now dying for my "boss" at my 2nd gig to bring me his spare 360 so I can finally play both of these games. I have no PC that can run it and 70+ hours a week tends to keep you from gaming much. I started the two job shiat when the current gen heated up, so I have neither a PS3 or 360, nor enough time or money (lol, bills) to worry about beefing up a computer at home, let alone touch what I've got.

Of the Gearbox stuff I've gotten to play, I like it. Glad to see a Farker's involved too. Nice to see industry peeps be "one of the guys".

I was going to leave this discussion thread alone, but since everyone decided to get butthurt over ZeroCorpse's perfectly reasonable comment, this is a good time to point out that Borderlands is a mediocre first-person shooter with mediocre gunplay, a lack of meaningful customization, built into one of the worst templates the industry has so-far conceived (the post-roguelike dungeon crawler), and instead of going with the obvious route (taking the swarms of monsters in Diablo and coming up with something similar to Serious Sam), the game is closer to World of Warcraft than any competent shooter. Now, whether you choose to accept that is not my problem, but at the end of the day, Doom II had nine weapons, seven of which were incredibly well balanced and all of which could be used in the course of routine combat. Having "88 bazillion guns" is only interesting if you can do interesting things with them.

rickycal78: Since I've been seeing so much positive feedback on this game, how decent is single player? I keep hearing about the multiplayer being so awesome but I hate doing multiplayer stuff. I played BL1 on single player and it was ok, but the gameplay itself seemed fairly repetitive in some areas. Mostly I liked the conversations with some of the NPC's and the comments they'd make here and there. I may actually have the $60 to blow this next paycheck and I can't make up my mind between BL2 and Darksiders 2 plus the DLC.

Darksiders 2 has been awesome but I love the Zelda games which is why I love this series. I'm assuming you've played the first one. DS2 is almost an entirely different game. It's much deeper than the original (think Zelda with much more classic RPG elements). I've been averaging about 15 hours a week (I work a lot) and I'm only halfway through. Well worth the $60 but I doubt you could go wrong with either purchase. Both games have LOTS to do.

It's a loot grind. If you like shooting things and the cracklike addiction of looking for better loot, it's your thing.

Compared to more sandboxed games like Fallout 3 or Red Dead Redemption, or more streamlined standard shooters. I can't imagine playing Borderlands 1 or 2 single player. That sounds kinda nightmarish. But as far as something fun and hilarious to play with friends, it's great.

gopher321: Meh. I think I'll wait for October 8th for my next gaming addiction: X-COM: Enemy Unknown

I've been in a gaming slump recently. Replayed Deus Ex: HR for the 3rd time. Fired up Skyrim. Played through HL:2, EP:1, EP:2, and even The Witcher 2. After that, I'd try a game and get bored within 10 minutes, instead falling back on Counterstrike: GO for some quick action with friends.

But then I downloaded the X-COM demo (I played the original extensively), and all it took was 25 minutes of playing the storied first mission, and playing the 2nd mission. I shut it down and my brother and wife were like, "that bad huh?"

I said "No, that's all I need. I'll be buying this asap when I get off work on the 8th. Book it, done."

I cannot farking wait for this game. CANNOT. WAIT.

In contrast, I am swamped right now. Dark Souls (half done), Borderlands 2 (maybe a quarter through first playthrough), Torchlight 2 (half done), FTL and SPAZ (both I could quit any time) on the go. Need to finish up New Vegas (I am tired of side quests and just want to finish a main quest line), trying to start playing Planetside 2 and/or L4D2 plus a couple more games I got on the recent Humble Indie Bundle I want to try. And have been looking for am opportunity to start Arkham City for a few months but it keeps getting bumped from major game spot. Then I have the Oddworld, Trine II, and Skyrim that got put on the backburner in the spring but I want to finish.

And now X-Com is coming.....

I really liked X-Com: UFO Defence, but as a person who played it for the first time about a year and a half ago I just got sick of struggling with the horribly dated UI. Looking forward to playing something similar with a modern UI.

And if TOR hits free to play soon and I want to get Guild Wars for Xmas. Lord, I am swamped but I am loving it.

No idea what you are talking about. But I haven't played the game in a month and a half. With games like that I obsessively do every sidequest, unfortunately if the game is big enough, I get tired of the game before getting to the main quest. The same happened with Skyrim (I have the last battle in the Civil War left and the main quest up to the point you have to resolve the Civil War and most major side quests done (I have completed the main lines for each group, but I didn't cure all the Companions or fully rebuild the Thieves Guild).

See for me, sandbox games are too distracting. I get bogged down exploring things and I end up with unfinished quests and not finishing the game after getting bored because I don't stay on track. Having at least a semi-linear story to helps me stay on track and finish games.

That said, I can't say I totally disagree with Mike Lowell up there. I can't speak for the second game, but the first BL game wasn't great, IMO. Maybe it's because I don't do multiplayer, but I'd get bored here and there due to the repetitive nature of some of the quests, and the scenery was pretty drab throughout much of the game. It's saving grace was the dialogue and little things the NPC's would say, and some of the funny or cool references.

I would encourage you to hang on a bit. The intro is your basic tutorial. Get to level 10-15 before you really start to judge it. Characters become far more interesting once you have access to your Action Skill. Also, it's totally okay if you don't like it. No game is good for everyone.

It's basically Borderlands at it's core, but a zillion tiny improvements have made it a VASTLY superior game in my opinion.

If I can add to this, one of the enhancements seems to have been to the game engine in terms of efficiency, as in it will run better than BL1 on the same hardware. I've actually got my girlfriend playing it on a Single Core 3.2GHz P4 (below minimum specs, technically) with an 8800 GTS 512mb and she gets a solid 15-20fps in high-activity areas (lots of geometry, mobs of enemies, etc). It's nothing amazing, but it's playable, compared to BL1 which used to chunk periodically; we've yet to see BL2 do that for her.

Spaced Cowboy: Fade2black: gopher321: Meh.

CANNOT. WAIT.

Pre-order from Steam and you get a free copy of Civ V and some extra squad customization options. Beats waiting until release day to grab it in a store.

Gamestop near my house is selling XCOM for $10 more than Steam, and without the customizations. Bleh.

rickycal78: That said, I can't say I totally disagree with Mike Lowell up there.

Borderlands 2 is funnier and prettier and better at the things you say you liked. I'm only level 31, so I can't speak to the itemization or stuff like that.

Radioactive_Clown: As the voice of Claptrap, I'm really getting a kick out of all these replies... :)

I just wanted to let you guys know how much I, and my girlfriend enjoy Borderlands 2. I am a game designer that has worked on AAA titles (for like 9 years now) and as someone that knows games and the process of making them I could tell by the quality of Gearbox's work on BL2 that you guys and girls are extremely passionate about the project and love it as if it were your child.

That kind of care and engagement for a game is rare, especially at the AAA level, but it absolutely shines through in your work. Congratulations to you and everyone there, I bet Gearbox is a fantastic place to work.

Kaybeck: Dafatone: It's a loot grind Skinner's Box. If you like shooting things and the cracklike addiction of looking for better loot, it's your thing.

Was the article any good?

I couldn't get very far into once it became clear to me the author didn't know how to play video games, because there were many better things to do in Suikoden II than swap gear around.

I think it was kind of a blessing that at first my mouse wouldn't show up on screen at all. Just learn all the keyboard shortcuts, and the menus become MUCH easier to navigate. The only thing I ever use the mouse for is to mark things as favorites (or trash) so I know what to sell/not sell... (hover over the right side of the item, and a star and an 'x' appear, I'll leave it up to you to figure out which is favorite and which is trash)

Ugh...Just picked up The Bane last night.

Hilarious, and hilariously awful. I laughed, I cried, I pooped, it was worse than "Cats."

that's actually great news, BL1 would occassionally give my older computer some problems... which always surprised me because I could run much more attractive (seemingly demanding) games with less frame rate problems.
