Flappyhead: I was laughing my ass off in the middle of a gun fight

Every time the Gunzerker starts humming "hall of the mountain king" I laugh.

meat0918: Is it really that good?

I'm still playing Skyrim, Diablo 3, and SWTOR, and I am looking forward to Simcity 5(if anyone has something like it that is a good game besides SC4 w/Rush Hour, I'm all ears).

I'm also waiting for Rift to go full FTP. That was a fun MMO, at least for me.

Although I also need to finish the games I bought last Halloween (Fear DLCs and Fear 2 + DLC)

Did you play Borderlands?

If you did and you liked it, you will like this. It is just Borderlands with everything (except skills) cranked up a notch and an actual story thrown in as bonus.
If you didn't like Borderlands, don't throw your money away.

rickycal78: Since I've been seeing so much positive feedback on this game, how decent is single player? I keep hearing about the multiplayer being so awesome but I hate doing multiplayer stuff. I played BL1 on single player and it was ok, but the gameplay itself seemed fairly repetitive in some areas. Mostly I liked the conversations with some of the NPC's and the comments they'd make here and there. I may actually have the $60 to blow this next paycheck and I can't make up my mind between BL2 and Darksiders 2 plus the DLC.

It's more of the same. You don't lose anything in single-player (ok, a few skills become worthless) other than just not having friends around.

scottydoesntknow: All it takes is 3 words to realize why I love Borderlands 2:

Bonerfarts and Butt Stallion!

/The story is suprisingly good too, definitely gets a lot darker toward the end

scottydoesntknow: PanicMan: Is anyone playing as Zer0? I'm thinking I'll try him next.

If you like sniping in other games, you'll love Zero. He's all about either extremely close damage or extremely far away damage. I roll with a shotgun and sniper rifle and can handle pretty much any situation (right now at least). He's all about critical hits too. You can get a perk that stacks crit damage up to 999 times.

Plus he speaks almost entirely in Haiku.

Heck, he's just about damage, period. Can't tank worth a damn, but has crazy mobility, an instant "Hey, look over there!" button, devastating melee, and crit multipliers up the wahzoo.

Plus the emoticons are a nice touch.

If you see this, then you've sure as hell entertained me all through BL1. Your part is definitely the best part fo the game. You got all the action and then out of nowhere, the Claptrap parts break it up in awesome fashion.

I haven't had the chance to get BL2 yet. My game budget has been exterminated by the new X-Wing Minis game... Trust me, I'll get it eventually and anything else you guys put out as long as it's on the PC.

Jack Thompson doesn't think videogames are addiction machines, he thinks they're murder machines. Or they turn children into murder machines. Something like that.

I was enjoying the hell out of this game till I came home from work one day this week and my game disc had somehow become all scratched up and unreadable. While it was inside my 360. I'm still trying to figure out how that happened.

If you with to use your new muse as a gun...

images1.wikia.nocookie.net

She also voiced the "Bane" gun type (Finish the Mission - The Bane) - the one that makes you super slow and makes the more horrific screaming noise every time you fire it. It really has to be heard in person im not sure the english language can properly describe that sound beyond the essence of annoying - because there are so many other awesome jokes / lines that you don't want to mute your TV to put up with it....then it starts grows on you...

Back from a quick lunch and what th-- I'M A TF'er AGAIN! Thank you, MaxxLarge! (and check your email)

I'll answer a couple more questions and then need to get back to work.

Dafatone, That's the first time I've seen the Hitachi video. I'm pretty sure we both borrowed from Mel Blanc and Curly Howard. In fact, there's an old Tom & Jerry cartoon from 1943 titled "Baby Puss" that has the same line when they sing "Mamãe eu Quero". I watched all the old Three Stooges shorts and the Warner Bros. and Hanna-Barbera cartoons as a kid (and still watch them now) so I know there was a huge influence there.

scottydoesntknow, thank you for your kind words. What we did for Michael was never meant to be public. We did the eulogy for his funeral at the request of his friend and I believe it was Michael's uncle who sent it to Kotaku. Anyway, it was really personal for both me and Mikey as I was 2 years into recovery from a broken neck and Mikey wrote it while recovering from a recent stroke. With both of us having faced with our own mortality and fortunate enough to still be here, we really wanted to do something to honor Michael and also show our appreciation. Even now I get goose-bumps just talking or writing about it.

Ok...I gotta get back to work. I really just wanted to drop the old Fark "kick out of all these replies" meme and bolt but I'm a sucker for misplaced praise and adoration. :P

P.S. Mikey just walked in my office and gave me a Claptrap cookie that somebody sent. Sweet!

Ha! Awesome! My buddy Dave and I are always saying, "shiat, wish we could get Claptrap to roll around with us." You make us laugh our asses off all the time. I even feel badly when we hear you say, "so lonely..." We felt crappy that no one came to your birthday. We ended up shooting our guns in the air like Mexican bandits. Kudos!

I don't know how, but Clap-Trap (in both games) is the most annoying character ever, that you just can't hate. That said, I loved playing Clap-Trap's Robot Revolution, solely because it was bloody satisfying to slaughter thousands of Clap-Traps.

So, I don't get it.

I just got the first one for free on my Playstation Plus account and... well... it's BORING. It's a standard FPS with really basic "missions" and a f♥cking annoying, slow track you must follow when the robot is leading you around. It's like the old rides at a theme park, when you sit in a car and you go through a tunnel and things pop out at you at specific intervals... You experience the scene, and interact a bit, and then the car moves on to the next timed event.

Maybe I'm just spoiled by the true sandboxy goodness of games like Fallout, Elder Scrolls, and Red Dead Redemption (among others), but I am finding Borderland to be a dull slog through a shooting gallery on a track, and little more.

Yes yes, we're all so very impressed with how discerning you are. Truly, your disappointment is the mark of a superior intellect.

/I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome the Borderlands franchise is.

2012-10-04 06:44:16 PM
To clarify: The first one was a grinding "Arrow comparison engine" that had some amusing aspects and was a bit of fun to play one you leveled up enough. It had a loose plot that brings you around the world (and this "following claptrap" thing tells me you've only played the intro level). The DLC stories (not the Underdome, but the other three) are a blast, and much more fun than the core game.

The second game improves on the diversity of weapons (appearance wise, and even in function). New types of enemies, new enemy "personality" types, a greater focus on the amusing aspects of the first, bigger areas before having to load a new map and most of all, it has a much, much more coherent plot, that actually does a good job of making sense of the events of the first game

/Second also had a much more satisfying ending to the core plot

You are experiencing the worst part of both games: the beginning. It gets much better after they let you loose from the "follow Claptrap and watch these scripted sequences" part.

I suggest you finish the tutorial segment before making your decision. But it is very grindy and repetitive, it's like a FPS dungeon crawler (like Diablo) and that is a staple of the genre.

Article link just lead me to the front page when I tried it. Read through the entire thread though, so I'm now dying for my "boss" at my 2nd gig to bring me his spare 360 so I can finally play both of these games. I have no PC that can run it and 70+ hours a week tends to keep you from gaming much. I started the two job shiat when the current gen heated up, so I have neither a PS3 or 360, nor enough time or money (lol, bills) to worry about beefing up a computer at home, let alone touch what I've got.

Of the Gearbox stuff I've gotten to play, I like it. Glad to see a Farker's involved too. Nice to see industry peeps be "one of the guys".

I was going to leave this discussion thread alone, but since everyone decided to get butthurt over ZeroCorpse's perfectly reasonable comment, this is a good time to point out that Borderlands is a mediocre first-person shooter with mediocre gunplay, a lack of meaningful customization, built into one of the worst templates the industry has so-far conceived (the post-roguelike dungeon crawler), and instead of going with the obvious route (taking the swarms of monsters in Diablo and coming up with something similar to Serious Sam), the game is closer to World of Warcraft than any competent shooter. Now, whether you choose to accept that is not my problem, but at the end of the day, Doom II had nine weapons, seven of which were incredibly well balanced and all of which could be used in the course of routine combat. Having "88 bazillion guns" is only interesting if you can do interesting things with them.

Many of the games which have been propagandized as good, great, or classic, aren't very good, great, or classic. Nothing trolly about that.

rickycal78: Since I've been seeing so much positive feedback on this game, how decent is single player? I keep hearing about the multiplayer being so awesome but I hate doing multiplayer stuff. I played BL1 on single player and it was ok, but the gameplay itself seemed fairly repetitive in some areas. Mostly I liked the conversations with some of the NPC's and the comments they'd make here and there. I may actually have the $60 to blow this next paycheck and I can't make up my mind between BL2 and Darksiders 2 plus the DLC.

Darksiders 2 has been awesome but I love the Zelda games which is why I love this series. I'm assuming you've played the first one. DS2 is almost an entirely different game. It's much deeper than the original (think Zelda with much more classic RPG elements). I've been averaging about 15 hours a week (I work a lot) and I'm only halfway through. Well worth the $60 but I doubt you could go wrong with either purchase. Both games have LOTS to do.

Mike_LowELL: I was going to leave this discussion thread alone, but since everyone decided to get butthurt over ZeroCorpse's perfectly reasonable comment, this is a good time to point out that Borderlands is a mediocre first-person shooter with mediocre gunplay, a lack of meaningful customization, built into one of the worst templates the industry has so-far conceived (the post-roguelike dungeon crawler), and instead of going with the obvious route (taking the swarms of monsters in Diablo and coming up with something similar to Serious Sam), the game is closer to World of Warcraft than any competent shooter. Now, whether you choose to accept that is not my problem, but at the end of the day, Doom II had nine weapons, seven of which were incredibly well balanced and all of which could be used in the course of routine combat. Having "88 bazillion guns" is only interesting if you can do interesting things with them.

It's a loot grind. If you like shooting things and the cracklike addiction of looking for better loot, it's your thing.

Compared to more sandboxed games like Fallout 3 or Red Dead Redemption, or more streamlined standard shooters. I can't imagine playing Borderlands 1 or 2 single player. That sounds kinda nightmarish. But as far as something fun and hilarious to play with friends, it's great.
