beta_plus: The foreign policy debate:

Obama: Thanks to my embracing intelligence gathered through torture, I successfully ordered the assassination of an unarmed man in front of his family while violating the territory of a nation that never attacked us, all the while taking credit for my predecessor's scheduled withdrawal from Iraq.

Romney: I won't sponsor sub-saharan african genocide in Libya and then let our Ambassador be assassinated by Al-Qaeda while blaming free speech and the 1st Amendment.

I think Obama just talks about Romney's mini-tour and how he struck-out playing T-ball.

Republicans lose like thiiiis, but Democrats lose like thiiiiiiis!

This is oddly correct, because I bet Romney really does have no idea where Libya is.

Mentat: Can't wait for the foreign policy debate.

Obama: We got bin Laden.
Romney: We'll get Big Bird.

Haha. Yoink!

2012-10-04 12:24:05 PM

shower_in_my_socks: LOL. The Republican candidate just contradicted every single thing he's stood for this entire campaign -- completely betraying all of the Republican voters who have supported him until now.

Which would be important if the GOP was self-aware.

And will Obama's "loss" really move the needle either direction? Will there be signifcant numbers swayed from one side to the other based on last night's "debate?" Doubtful.

2012-10-04 12:25:40 PM
Yeah, awful lot of spinning going on, that's for sure...

Meanwhile, here's what Republicans look like today:

Ping Pong point celebration

2012-10-04 12:25:45 PM

brigid_fitch: No, it's not trollage. Romney did way better than anyone expected and Obama looked like he was struggling. However, there wad nothing of substance to Romney's debate--everything was either outright lies ($716B stolen from Medicare! Death Panels!) or the same garbage he's been spouting for months ("I'm going to repeal everything you've passed and replace it with something almost identical that will be better and cheaper, but I'm not going to supply details!")
Why Obama didn't call him on his BS is beyond me. Obama spent most of his time telling anecdotes about people he'd met along the campaign trail than anything else. He was definitely off his game.

I actually started wondering if he did it on purpose. Remember how good Obama is at manipulating people, at getting the last zinger in? I wonder if he kind of let everything go, let Romney get his "victory" (which wasn't as clear to me as it seems to be to others, since I sort of like the truth), and he's going to slam him in the other debates. Romney gave all he had last night. If Obama brings something different to the next debates and starts going after him next time--maybe even throwing back some of his exact words from the first debate--Romney is going to be thrown. And he's going to lose it.

2012-10-04 12:26:03 PM

DamnYankees: Kazan: MaudlinMutantMollusk: //and why the hell he didn't call out Romney for his repeated lies still puzzles me

because often calling out someone for their dishonesty is a waste of time - their supporters will eat up the lies like popcorn, your supporters know their lies, and the neutrals are likely to listen to fact checkers.

Also, accusing someone of lying can make you look desperate, and allows Romney to say that the President has no ideas of his own and is falling back on ad hominem.

It is EXTREMELY difficult to debate someone who does so in bad faith and with a smile.

God, you just gave me a flashback to my divorce mediation. Now I'm shaking. Thanks a bunch.

2012-10-04 12:26:15 PM
People gave Obama too much credit, but you just need to watch his past debates to see this was not off par.

2012-10-04 12:26:42 PM

MaudlinMutantMollusk: I knew it was going to be trolly around here today

/yeah, I know... duh

They need every victory magnified so they can still claim this is a horse race. I'm not sure which is more pathetic, the candidate or the glitter job they are pulling with the results of the first debate. Oh well, the broadcast companies gots ta get paid!

2012-10-04 12:27:11 PM
I thought the worst part about the debate was the awful format. Two minutes for politicians to speak about what is supposed to be important issues facing the country? It takes them a minute and a half just to preface everything they say with God, Mom, and Apple Freedom Pie.

2012-10-04 12:27:17 PM
Both of them were bad, in different ways. And, as many predicted, the so-called pundits call that a Romney "victory". F*ck'em all.

The best thing for the GOP is an Obama re-election win. The GOP would risk explosion from a Romney victory, as they realize he's actually not a batshiatinsane.

2012-10-04 12:29:53 PM

ManateeGag: unlikely: From what I see, they look like "Wow, Obama really sucked, what the hell was he doing out there" and generally unhappy with the performance.

Is there something I'm missing?

they aren't calling for his immediate resignation and the installation of Sarah Palin as Empress, so they are obviously trying to spin the loss into a win.

have Obama resign and Biden take his place. That frakker would *fight* for his job!

Pretty much this. It was a disappointing performance, but my vote wasn't hanging on the outcome of the debate, so it doesn't make much of difference to how I'm going to cast it.

The way I read the tea leaves is that this will hurt him, but probably not a lot, if history is anything to go by.

I hope that he's more prepared for the next time.

/ I assume that there will be more.

If people are gullible enough to have their minds changed by this charade - it's really just a series of two-minute campaign speeches - then this country really is doomed.

If it does not do this, a backlog of bile can build up inside the creature and kill it.

Let's be fair. If our candidate had been sucking as hard as Romney, I'm pretty sure we'd cheer if he managed to land a good performance. When you're clutching at straws, you take what victories you can.

The format in-and-of-itself wasn't bad; how it was applied was.

/looks at Jim Lehrer

I wonder how tight a ship Crowley will keep during the second debate. If she keeps both of them on a leash, then it favors Obama. If Romney tries to do a repeat of last night, Obama will just follow suit and go after Romney hard.

Mentat: I don't buy the rope-a-dope theory. I think the Obama campaign got a little cocky and thought that they could just run out the clock. That said, Romney's win last night was the equivalent of a hail mary TD pass while down by 21 with 10 minutes left in the game. The Obama campaign still has the superior ground game and there's plenty of time to move on from this debate.

My thought is more: Debates only have a huge impact if someone says something really awesome or really stupid. A lot of Democrats wanted Obama to be on the offensive to destroy Romney. While he could have done that, it could have backfired by making him look assholish/angryblackman/etc. Obama is ahead right now, he doesn't need a big boost from the debates. He's playing it safe; low risk, low reward vs. high risk high reward.

Good. It's the candidate's job to police themselves, not the moderator. Obama needs to learn to stick up for himself in a fight

This was as bad as that first Clinton debate, he was sleepy and kinda foggy in that one too, but then he had much better performance in the next one. I know this is wishful thinking, but maybe this his own expectations game. He's got the town hall and another debate to really land some punches while Mitt thinks he's the big dog now.

This is why I don't get excited about the debates. It's just a Punch and Judy show. I did smirk at McCain's plunge into Plumberdom and his offer to buy everyone's house last cycle so I guess I like puppet shows as much as the next, but I can't get all riled up about anything that's said.

2012-10-04 12:40:24 PM
Obama may have not been great, but could you really call it a victory for Mitt "Imma kill Big Bird!" Romney? He was obviously pandering to the Democrat vote, but manage to kill that with the "Creator" soundbite.
