Needsun: I think the mental midgets have, once again, missed the point.
PBS is a commercially viable product capable of supporting itself
and showing a profit on the bottom line. Why are they collecting
welfare from the feral gub'amint (aka taxpayers)? Oh, it's ONLY
.0012%! The amount of support isn't relevant, the fact they're
being supported at all is the issue. Don't worry tho - your food
stamp president will come to the rescue.

No it isn't. You're making the same mistake the people focusing on Big Bird are, in conflating some successful studios who produce content for the PBS market with PBS. However, unlike those people, you're wrong on additional levels, because the removal of PBS would in fact destroy the product those studios make. In your invisible free hand capitalist utopia they would be forced to accept creative 'input' from the stations, modify content to fit advertisers, and eventually turn into the exact kind of toyetic crap that makes them and their ability to avoid that by being on PBS a breath of fresh air compared to the content available on the other stations. In short, you are a whore's john shilling for pimps, and should very much go fark yourself with a bag of burning cocks, you sulpherous whoreson.

And I mean that with all due honesty and intent. Anyone who goes after PBS deserves their world of reality TV and Paris Hilton, but I do not personally want to have to live in it as well. Your statement is either disingenuous or outright lying, and regardless of which, deserving of nothing but the outright scorn, contempt, and hatred of all thinking beings. "HURP if people wanted books, they'd go buy them, we should get rid of libraries! DERP electricity practically pays for itself, let the free market decide! HURPADERP if people want to drive in their neighborhood, they'd pay to have them paved, no need for gubmint handouts!" fark you. fark you. fark everyone you know. fark your whole entire extended family. Generally I'd rather avoid divisive politics, but your sort of pseudo-intellectual 'my ignorance is just as good as his knowledge' lying, manipulative, idiotic, farktarded bullshiat is ACTUALLY what is ruining this country. Corporate greed can be mitigated, stupidity can be taught away, proud ignorance masquerading as intelligence however, is forever. Which you will prove by coming back and doubling down on your idiocy, I have no doubts.

Balchinian: hdhale: kayanlau: Romney couldn't dent the deficit with the PBS cut. It is a mere 0.012% of budget.

You would prefer another target, an entitlement target? Then name the entitlement program! I grow tired of asking this so it will be the last time: *Where* is the money to balance the budget?

I can answer this very easily, plainly, and clearly. The answer is that there is no money to balance the budget, and we are all economically farked. The struggle in DC anymore is not how to balance the budget. They all know it can't be done. The struggle is how to keep juggling shiat around to make it last long enough to collect their pensions and get them into off-shore accounts, and time it so the other party is in control when it all comes tumbling down.

It is like that old vaudeville act where the guy is spinning plates on sticks. There are far too many plates to keep spinning, there have been for years, and everyone knows that you can't keep plates spinning forever anyway. It is all going to come crashing down, so nobody is really truly trying to do anything to keep that from happening. They are just trying to stall and posture so that when the plates do all fall down they can come out of it without any cuts and can point the finger at the other guy. In the meantime, they all keep smiling at the audience as if everything is going to be great, the music keeps playing, and as long as you don't look too closely everything seems fantastic.

Interesting, because $900 billion goes a LONG, LONG god damn way ... Fark the DoD and raise taxes on all ... and make sure that everyone knows that the 10% increase in taxes are a direct result of 2 unpaid wars and our cold war against Russia.

TV's Vinnie: We now live in a world where Big Bird is more in danger of being taken off the air than Honey Boo Boo Child.

Republican voters can't understand Big Bird, but they can understand Honey Boo Boo Child. That's Romney's pandering ass on stage, ensuring that Americans remain dumb, docile, and distracted while he and his rich assholes continue pillaging more than half a century of middle class financial gains, so they can line their own pockets while dumb bastards watch Honey Boo Boo Child and blame "libruls" for it.

Solty Dog: FirstNationalBastard: It's not really Elmo's fault. He was a popular character, and the geniuses running Sesame Street decided to rebuild the show around him

Kevin Clash, the voice of Elmo, is the person that decides content. That screams shenanigans. He forcefed his own character to the children. The show is horrible and the voice is like Fran Drescher's dying velociraptor voice. I will be so glad when my kid is out of that. I am burning...everything.

I think performing Elmo and that character's popularity is what led to Kevin's rise to power, not vice versa. I'm not a huge fan of Elmo, but I have kids so I'm stuck with him for a bit. However, I have a new respect for Kevin Clash after watching Being Elmo on Netflix and seeing how he really worked his way up to being a puppeteer on SS.

2012-10-04 12:22:45 PM

FirstNationalBastard: Queue33: Have the Republicans considered the long term electoral damage that opposing PBS does?

As a child I knew with absolute certainty that Fred Rodgers = goodness in life. As a parent I can see my daughters love of Elmo and Daniel Tiger.

Why would you stake out a position in opposition to childhood joy and unconditional love?

So, the whole animated Daniel Tiger thing is decent? It's not crapping on the legacy of Mister Rogers Neighborhood?

buckeyebrain: Wade_Wilson: I always wonder why they didn't just spin Elmo off into his own show. He's popular enough to carry one, and the others characters have been able to carry one for over 40 years. Seems like you could get two popular shows out of it.

Like what Animaniacs did when Pinky and the Brain became big.

Wade_Wilson, are you pondering what I'm pondering?

I think so, but this time, you put the trousers on the chimp.

I had expected it to be awful but it isn't.

The thing that set Mr. Rodgers apart was the sincerity that came through and they pulled that off in the new show too.

ZoeNekros: This is why Romney won't release his plan -- people like the idea of austerity, but not the specifics. This is also why I would have liked Obama to have used one of those two minute periods as follows:

Governor Romney, we find ourselves with an audience who want what's best for our country, but they need information. Right now I only have two minutes, so I have to ask myself, "What is the best way to inform them of the differences between our plans?" In normal circumstances the best way would be to list a few bullet points from my own plan. But, these aren't normal circumstances. I think a better use of time is a symbolic minute of silence, following this explanation. I raise a single issue, which you have so far ignored, and that is your silence.

As things stand, the American people have every reason to believe that either you don't have a plan, or you don't want them to know your plan. You need to address this issue, because they have a right to that information. Tell them specifically how you would change the tax code, and what departments, or programs, you would cut. In this minute you can think up a few specifics to fill your two minutes, but more importantly you need to fill the deafening silence that currently exists in this country. After the debate, you need to put your entire plan out in the open, on the Internet as I have, and allow the people to make an informed decision.

[Minute of silence]

hdhale: That's not going to balance the budget. It will however leave us vulnerable and will likely cause us to have to spend even more money down the road if you cut too deep because we'll be at war.

No, entitlements have to be cut. The problem is no one wants to give up their honey pot, and so PBS becomes a target when it doesn't have to be.

Do you really believe this is true? We spend nearly as much on war as the rest of the world combined. We have no enemies on our borders more significant than drug gangs, and the natural defense of thousands of miles of ocean against everyone else. Our defense spending is totally absurd. We draw up multi-billion dollar contracts for items that aren't even needed then go billions over budget anyway. It's totally ridiculous. The defense budget could be cut in at least half without leaving us vulnerable. And make no mistake - defense spending IS the honey pot that no one wants to give up. It's well paying, white collar, do nothing busy work jobs to produce products that no one needs and often don't even work.

Gotta love Fark. I didn't watch the stage-managed bullshiat everybody calls a "debate" and when I started seeing references to Big Bird on the intertubes (with no explanation), my reaction was "WTF?" But all I had to do was scroll down about 10 comments in this thread, and now I know what's going on.

It's amusing how the bar is set so low for Republicans now in this thing, if they can do better than drool and mumble "secret Muslim," they can "win" the "debate."

As if all the stupid shiat they've been saying for years now is erased by a merely competent performance in one appearance by spokesmodel Romney.

That's right, the gay-hating, woman-hating, brown-hating, poor-hating screeching by the Republicans is all washed away now. I'm convinced they're the ones who need to be running the country, if that's possible after stammering Obama has completely ruined it in 3 years. He was handed a shimmering jewel of affluent democracy and look what he's done to it. Thanks a lot, Fartbongo.

My uninformed (but trying to be more informed) roommate asked me last night "Everyone going on and on about Obama's plans being like socialism...what's so bad about socialism? What people don't want is totalitarianism (he didn't use that word, but spent 30 seconds describing Soviet Russia and Best Korea's leadership) - socialism sounds pretty good, actually."

And that is why they fail. The younger kids are going "Socialism? What's that?" and then they read about it on wikipedia, and see that it's only when the government farks it up, or decides that any move in the general direction of something that kind of looks like socialism if you squint a lot is bad, they become social democrats.

This uninformed roommate adds: "Isn't, like, Denmark a bunch of socialists, and they're doing pretty well." ("Sweden, actually, but yes, they are.")

And this is a low-info mid-twentysomething from Central Florida. In a few short years, the GOP is gonna be HOSED.

Except that the budget was balanced in the 90s, so the Cold War debt was paid off. We had to go into Afghanistan, so I'm sorry for your problems, but if that war wasn't justified, get on a plane and get out of my country. Iraq was a total judgment call and I personally would have order us in, but I wouldn't have just assumed that the natives would all be friendly like the French in 1944. Yes, your taxes should have gone up to the old Clinton era rates at some point, but also remember that the economy was on the downhill slide BEFORE Bush took office, thanks to the dotcom bubble bursting and thousands of high tech, high paying jobs disappeared over night. 9/11 didn't help either. Raising taxes without mobilizing the country properly (another Bush mistake IMHO...never declare a war on anything without a draft) would have made things worse.

There is a hell of a lot of blame to go around regarding why we went from the black (done with a Moderate to Liberal President and a basically Moderate to Conservative Congress) to deep crimson with the Federal budget. What's also clear is that Mr. Obama means well but he's incapable of balancing the budget or even getting it moving in that direction. Mr. Romney at least gives us a chance...however slim...of getting back there.

No, it wasn't balanced by Clinton, he used enron-esque tactics to claim it did. And balanced budget vs. debt is a hugely different thing.

www.brillig.com, from http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/faq.html for instance. If it had been balanced, you'd see the overall debt total go down, which you can see it doesn't. And we haven't paid OFF the debt until that number drops to zero.

I tried to read the rest of your points, but couldn't, because I'm thinking they're based on your flawed opening statement.

His comment that you can not balance the budget by raising taxes is what sticks out because it shows that he does not know math or any kind of accounting. Along with that, he wants to add another $2 trillion in unnecessary military spending.
