I always wonder why they didn't just spin Elmo off into his own show. He's popular enough to carry one, and the others characters have been able to carry one for over 40 years. Seems like you could get two popular shows out of it.

Like what Animaniacs did when Pinky and the Brain became big.

Kevin Clash, the voice of Elmo, is the person that decides content. That screams shenanigans. He forcefed his own character to the children. The show is horrible and the voice is like Fran Drescher's dying velociraptor voice. I will be so glad when my kid is out of that. I am burning...everything.

Ah, but if you do a bit of research, his days as a Producer come only after Sesame Street is changed to be more of the Elmo Show.

So, odds are the people in charge decide to change things because of toy sales, then the guy doing the character gets a bone tossed his way.

yep. and elmo is popular because kids love him. i don't know WHY they do but they do. when my kid was 5 months old he was in love with elmo, it was one of the first things he instantly recognized. elmo makes him smile every time. perhaps because he's red so he catches the eye faster

F*ck Big Bird. I mean, I never saw him do anything for Sesame Street. He just lumbered around, pointed out the obvious, and patronized Oscar. And f*ck Elmo, too, now that I think about it. The only one worth their weight in salt was Bert. Most people don't know, but he was the brains behind that entire show.

I think it's more because the age demographic shifted.

Think about it: In some ways, a number of the characters are sort of 'embodiments' of an age group. Big Bird is like a preschooler or kindergardner: He's started asking 'why', is seriously thinking about things, is trying to grapple with some difficult concepts (Alphabet, death, friendship, etc etc).

Elmo's more like a toddler or two-year old. Can't get them to shut up, bouncy, almost a little spazzy in their wide-eyed exploration of the world.

And with a lot more pre-school now, there just.. aren't as many pre-school aged children *watching* the show. Elmo fits their developmental level more, so they shifted the age-range down towards him.

/Note: I do not yet have children of my own, and am not a developmental psychologist, so this is just my own interpretation.

Have the Republicans considered the long term electoral damage that opposing PBS does?

As a child I knew with absolute certainty that Fred Rodgers = goodness in life. As a parent I can see my daughters love of Elmo and Daniel Tiger.

Why would you stake out a position in opposition to childhood joy and unconditional love?

Because unconditional love is FOR SUCKERS AND ANTIAMERICAN!

You gotta know how to HATE! You gotta know how to FEAR, like JAAAAYYYSUUUUSSS would want! He wouldn't preach about no unconditional love, 'cept for AMERICA! That's why rich people are rich! 'Cause JAYSUS loves 'am!

Am I the only one who ever read Grover is bitter? I found it hysterical...

The beginning: "To some, Grover's upbringing sounds romantic and exciting. But to a young Grovski Carbunkle, born in a dingy flat in Queens on October 14th, 1955, it was anything but."

I work overnights and care for the little hose heads during the day while Mrs. Hobbs works so we make ends meet. There is no nap better than the 10 to 11 Sesame Street nap. The only time the TV is on usually. I don't think a vote for either one of those j/os will change our situation but Romney can EABODs if he Fs with my nap time.

That's not possible, but it sure sounds good!

It's a great point but not exactly one that will convince anyone. Anyone intelligent enough to know what 500 Gigabytes represents and what a hard drive is probably already understands the point.

I used to work for a telecom company, and trust me the average user doesn't know what a GB is. I'd be willing to bet that 1024 Mb USB sticks would sell better than 2Gb USB sticks for the same price if sold in a store where there weren't knowledgeable clerks to explain the difference.

I'll be interested to see new polls on Friday. I understand that Romney looked very calm and collected, but I want to know if anyone fell for the lines of bullshiat oozing out of Mitt's mouth.
I want to see ads from th Obama camp saying, "Mitt Romney's plan for fiscal solvency is slashing funding for PBS and NPR. Does Mr. Romney really believe we can balance the budget by slashing less than 1% of spending?". They should show an image of a small child happily watching Big Bird, then the television screen mysteriously turning to static. Personally, I feel that would be a very powerful image.
