Yeah, Helen Keller is working out just fine.

god, he was awful. absolutely terrible.

FlashHarry: god, he was awful. absolutely terrible.

He did manage to get one stellar line out at the end by forcing Romney to say what he'd do as President: "I love America." But yeah, he got utterly run over, mostly by Mitt but Obama joined in later on too once he realized Mitt was going to and was going to take the last word no matter what the structure was.

I laughed when Mitt Romney started to say, "Let's talk about..." and Jim said, "Let's not." But other than that, he was terrible. We could have just done without him and let the two men duke it out on their own. That would have been far more entertaining.

This is part of why, I think, Romney "won" the debate because he took the lead. Obama was too cautious. And poor Lehrer got flattened.

I think Mitt getting angry and steamrolling the moderator will fire up the base a bit, but I'm not sure how acting like an asshole is going to play in the middle.

2012-10-04 08:41:18 AM
Liberal LSM media claims romney was mean to the moderator.

2012-10-04 08:42:12 AM
Whoa down there. Without Jim, would we have honestly had a chance of finding out that Mitt is a fan of big bird?

2012-10-04 08:42:58 AM

James!: I think Mitt getting angry and steamrolling the moderator will fire up the base a bit, but I'm not sure how acting like an asshole is going to play in the middle.

There's still a middle?

Lehrer's too civilized for that kind of shiat.

He was no more a "moderator" than that was a "debate."

2012-10-04 08:46:23 AM
I think last night's performance put a poop pile on a darned good journalist's career.

I think he lost some of his base by saying regulation is good and defending Romneycare though. May be a push with the base.

Funny. We say this every time Lehrer moderates a debate.

He was like the replacement referee of debate moderators. The debate was completely out of his control.

I've seen better moderated debates on the Morton Downey Jr show.

Sure you all say you want Judge Judy to be a Mod, but in reality you guys really want Lehrer. Not sure who you want for the debates though.

2012-10-04 08:57:20 AM
I can understand not wanting to tell the President to shut up, but he could've at least said "Mr. Romney, you are not the President yet, so stop interrupting."

I wouldn't. I want worthy adversaries in my moderators. If I could just steamroll all over moderator like Lehrer, where would the fun be in that?

SlothB77: He was like the replacement referee of debate moderators.

An apt analogy from football. From the outset, one side decided he was going to roll over the ref at the beginning. When the ref didn't immediately call a penalty and rein in the nonsense, the violations continued and the ref lost control of the game.

It's very simple. You give the moderator a kill switch that turns off each candidate's microphone and pin spot so that if they go over they're muted and plunged into the shadows. Kind of like professors who say five page paper limit and rip off pages six through twenty and give you an F for not following directions. I bet after a few of those the candidates magically find a way to keep within their time constraints.

This is an outrage. Candidates are not allowed to moderate debates.

IMHO, you shouldn't have to treat two people who are running to be leader of the free world like 2nd graders.

I'm pretty sure he couldn't have kept Eastwood's chair from talking over him.

A poorly moderated debate that is nothing more that candidates pontificating?

American democracy is a farking embarrassment.

And so are the FARK mods.

2012-10-04 09:24:35 AM
I think that the debates would actually be better with no moderator. Place two chairs on the stage with two mics and let the participants actually talk to each other. You wouldn't have the built in bias of the moderator and I think that you would learn a lot more about the candidates.

When the American people stop nominating people who act like second graders, we can stop treating them like second graders.

I don't know what the best solution is. But I think what you're proposing would result in even more rehearsed, throwaway lines, and sound bites that would tell us no more about the candidates than their ads and stump speeches.

So Democrats, great friends of the elderly they believe themselves to be, are now blaming Obama's debate loss on... Jim Lehrer's age? Awe yeah, keep workin' it, Democrats!

2012-10-04 09:25:44 AM
The next moderator:

www.everydaynodaysoff.com

"I said your faking time is up, Nancy. Are you going to shut your hole or do I have to come over there and shove that microphone where you are getting your talking points from?"

2012-10-04 09:26:26 AM
Oh, and at 78 Lehrer is just too farking old to control the action like a boss. Someone 40-50 has the experience, stamina and mental quickness to keep things lively yet within the debate framework. If Tim Russert were alive he'd be the natural choice. Sadly David Gregory is a moron and the top conservative media guys (Chris Wallace and Bret Baier) would never get a shot because they're FOXies, so I would say maybe Gwen Ifill or Mara Liasson.

2012-10-04 09:27:11 AM
So Romney clearly came off better than Obama, and the liberals are looking for a scapegoat. "Yeah, it was the moderator..." It has to be someone's fault, because their dear leader could not possibly have lost, amirite?

//Lehrer was fine...

Once again, proving accurate to prediction... Obama lost so the liberals are not talking about him or anything he said. Blaming Lehner and trying to make the story about him instead of Obama.

Obama got stomped and that's all there is to it.

Then they shouldn't act like second graders. A big part of the job involves discipline. If you lack the ability to tailor your remarks to fit the debate framework that you agreed to you have no business being on the stage. I've participated in numerous debates and trust me, staying within your time allotment while making a cogent argument is a requirement, not a suggestion.

Gloating because Romney had one - one - passable performance where he didn't embarrass himself? From you? I'm so shocked.
