Sorry subby, You're not going to talk shiat about B.B. King and get away with it.

He shames Rush pretty bad in musical accomplishment.

2012-10-04 01:52:11 PM
The only reason Rush made it this year is because Cliff Robertson Burnstein is on the selection panel

Fixed that for myself, why did I think the AT&T spokesguy would nominate some band he never heard of?

2012-10-04 01:52:59 PM
I'm questioning their talent, or the fact that they have a legion of fans. I'm just wondering what the appeal of Rush is supposed to be. I'm a Canadian, and growing up listening to them being played as cancon really makes me wonder what the deal is supposed to be.

jake_lex: This letter from the Sex Pistols sums up the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame perfectly:

Egad! The author's spelling and penmanship are atrocious!

sotua: shoegaze99: Speaker2Animals: Rush -- isn't that the band with a lead singer who sounds like he's getting a colonoscopy with a Black & Decker?

I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy?

He pretty much does.

Blame Robert Plant and his terribly successful band for Geddy's vocal tone. It's just what was in at the time Rush started (in fact when Rush had its first radio hit people would call the station and ask what was the name of that new Led Zep song), and it stuck.

Rush's first album (before Neil joined) was much more Zeppelin-esque. There is more than one song from that self-titled release that sounds like a Zeppelin cover. Interestingly, the latest 3 or so albums are more of a return to that style, and not the overly-synthed 80s stuff.

// but Subdivisions still rocks
// as does Leave That Thing Alone

2012-10-04 02:01:24 PM
I hope Joan Jett and the Blackhearts get in, and then Eric Ambel can play that shaitty guitar solo.

2012-10-04 02:02:41 PM
Glad to see Albert King get some props, but honestly, I lost all interest in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame when Madonna got in.

We're getting to the point where every band to have a top 40 hit in the 60s has been nominated.

WHY ISN'T STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK IN THE R&RHOF?!?!?!?!

// they got robbed so blind

DanZero: The only reason Rush made it this year is because Cliff Robertson is on the selection panel. He was the A&R guy from Mercury Records who discovered them in '74 and brought them to his label.

They'd join other rock luminaries also nominated this year such as Public Enemy and N.W.A.

I read somewhere that if Rush made it they should pull a Bad News Bears and say "WE DON'T WANT YOUR STINKIN TROPHY!" How awesome would that be

I'd rather they just ignored it altogether.

2012-10-04 02:09:06 PM
I understand the love for all this year's nominees.

What I do not understand is the lack of induction for Big Mama Willie Mae Thornton, the Johnny Burnette Rock 'N' Roll Trio, Dick Dale, Link Wray, Billy Ward & His Dominoes, Esther Phillips (aka Little Esther), and dozens of other performers who influenced every nominee this year.

Yes, I'm old. Old enough to remember "Rocket 88" on the radio.

2012-10-04 02:13:09 PM
When you have people refusing to show up to their own induction because of the lulz-worthy processes of the place, tell me why I ought to care any more than they do.

Albert "the" King can not be denied, nor can his Blues use of the Flying V...

I love listening to In Session with him and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Grandpa?

I think the Meters and Rush deserve. Vote for them on the website.

Did someone lock Jann Wenner out of the room during the nominations?

[soapbox]
For the haters, you can talk all you want about silly lyrics, shrill voiced singers or whatever but here are a few key facts:
44 years as a professional band
38 years(!) with the same lineup,
24 gold records and 14 platinum records over the course of their career (Only the Beatles and the Stones have had more)
79th in the world in albums sold
A reputation as one of the best live acts touring who consistently sell out every venue they play
Influencing thousands of musicians that followed them (talk to just about any rock drummer or bassist of the last 30 years - they all acknowledge their influence)

Regardless of whether you like their music, you can't argue with their impact. There's no question they deserve to be in the Hall
[/soapbox]

/Assuming they're inducted, they should play this at the ceremony just to confuse people
//or at least have Kim Mitchell induct them

2012-10-04 02:20:26 PM
Given that Rush is Canadian, and has such a large Canadian fan base, it makes me sad that they don't make more stops here.

2012-10-04 02:21:59 PM
I kind of had a feeling Rush would show up in the HOF nominees when Rolling Stone did a pretty lengthy (and complimentary) profile of them last year.

Just checked RS, top five vote-getters so far:

Rush
Deep Purple
Heart
Joan Jett
Albert King

2012-10-04 02:24:43 PM
I knew Albert King, good guy and a helluva guitar slinger. He deserves to be there, and fark everyone who thinks otherwise.

2012-10-04 02:25:24 PM
Beyond the Lighted Stage is one of the best rock band documentaries I've seen. If you haven't seen it, VH1-Classic runs it pretty regularly.

Gulper Eel: Once again, no love for Steve Miller.

Really? Thats surprising... I grew up in the Rock n Roll capital of the world, and Steve Miller was actually the first concert i ever went to. All those songs are pretty well-known.

tuna fingers: The problem with Rush and this Rock & Roll thingie...
it's the Roll part.
Nobody rolls with Rush.

Consider the people that listen to Rush: they "rock" with their air guitars until they get winded... and then they lie down until the van picks them up from the community center.
They'd get the "Roll" part it Bertrude didn't insist on listening to Glenn Beck all the time.

Roll the Bones biatches!

Two night induction ceremony. Night one, Rush. Night two, everyone else.

Wait... Purple isn't in? The band who created metal as the world knows it?

If Joan Jett and Rush get in at the same time, will Joan piss on Alex's guitar again?

/ if she piddles on Big Al's ES-355, I'll kick her ass myself.

No, not at all. Surprised he isn't already in the Hall of Fame.

No. The entire 2112 side is one of the greatest ever.

Problem is... Rush never did much else that was good.

Interesting angle. What bands SHOULD someone be listening to after 9th grade in your opinion?

The Runaways opened for Rush a few times back in the 70s. The Runaways say Rush treated them awfully. In the Runaways movie, after a sound check, Joan goes back pisses on the guitars of the headline band

Joan says it's cinematic license and didn't actually happen (the fact that Al didn't shove the neck of his guitar up her ass corroborates this).

Cherry and Joan don't miss an opportunity to dis Rush in general and Geddy Lee in particular. Rush probably doesn't remember them.

Steely Dan.

But I was mostly kidding. Rush is certainly a fine band.

That the Meters aren't already in there is a testament to the R&R HOF being a farce.

Well, it's aboot time. It thought they were going to wait until 2112 to be nominated.

"Women's restrooms at Rush concerts are the world's lonliest place"

It is true. My wife and my sister where able to go to the bathroom during the intermission of the Time Machine tour, and this was something like "a couple dozen port-a-potties for thousands upon thousands on a gigantic stadium". I knew better than to try the men's restrooms.

One thing I always respected about Rush, and why women don't swoon over them...they don't write cheesy love songs.

Please vote Rush in. That way, maybe the hardcore fans can stop whining about it.
