That's too bad because it looked pretty cool in 2007:

I sound fat: So, wait, the ONLY reason to wear black makeup now is blackface?

They do realize that black people arent actually BLACK, right?

That's exactly what i said. No one is actually BLACK. Black is a combination of all colors. Skin does not come out in a combination of all colors. Brown and Dark Brown...not black.

Gordon Bennett: Solution: change the wording on the tickets to "wear black clothing" and "wear orange clothing".

Oregon doesn't have a problem with this. I haven't heard of a problem with this anywhere they do blackouts at least once a year. Someone at Oregon State just needed some attention.

Boston Kiwi: I read the thread expecting something from you but since you hadn't been here yet I jumped in for you.
The AB's have certainly been on fire (except that dodgy Argie game in sunny Wellington), and I hope they cap it off with a beating against the Bokkies this weekend!

I'll try to remember to get a thread started Saturday morning! I missed the game against the pUmas (channeling Jedi) but since I'll be at work while it's on I'll be able to watch.

dentalhilljack: Other schools have pulled off "Black Out" promotions by wearing black shirts and no one complained about race. What makes Oregon State so special?

This fairy princess right here makes Oregon State so special.

She is the retard ASB President that raised this very serious issue.

Its great that white people can get preemptively offended for black people, even though most black people probably aren't going to give a shiat.

You're either trolling, or you're that special kind of stupid. Give us another hint towards which one it is.

White people have to get offended by it because the Negro is of a lesser intellect and is incapable of understanding when it has been made the object of ridicule of derision.

Yeah, I'm TOTALLY infringing on people's god-given right to be assholes.

Remember, if something's maybe-offensive but maybe-not, you are duty bound to do it loudly and proudly because freedom.

No, I mean the Fark "Someone's unnecessarily offended? RAAAAAAAAGE" brigade yelling about how awful it is that painting your face black could be interpreted as black face.

First of all, thanks for the link to one of the better music videos of all time.

Second, any time there's a thread about someone getting offended by something that's not necessarily offended, a slew of people start yelling about how the "offender" totally has to stand up for themselves and continue that activity in the face of oppression or whatever. Like here, the school says "no black out because people are painting themselves black and wearing afro wigs and we think that's not okay," and a whole slew of people get all "WTF school how can you think that's offensive keep black out day!!!"

There was a thread about a year ago about some guy who had a halloween decoration of a body hanging by a noose from a tree. One of his neighbors thought it was a lynching reference and got outraged. It probably wasn't. But the guy got all "nuh uh I don't care if you're offended it's my right to hang it!" and everyone here agreed and said he should keep it up longer to piss the neighbor off or something. I don't understand that. Just because you're not WRONG doesn't mean pissing someone off who is unnecessarily offended is a good deed.

A Fark Handle: Black_Lazerus: black man here? can someone explain how you get the jump from wear black clothing = wear black face?

giving a 110%! support your team!

there's black face paint and then there's black face with afros. apparently the latter happen during the 2007 "blackout" and 5 years later there are "concerns" that students still haven't learned to wear black appropriately. i say trade out the school color black for teal. imagine what horrible things nike could do with orange and teal.

ok, i guess what bothers me is that while some people will get offended, a lot of us ( the blacks) laugh pretty hard when you try to avoid racial conflict, by treating us like children who will throw a tantrum at anytime. yes we laugh and mock your white guilt.

Here's where we differ. We need to fight back against people who are unnecessarily offended. It's an epidemic. The expansion of the victim class across the social strata has gotten out of hand and we need to shrink it back wherever and whenever we can.

To me, that's just that today's media (namely, the internet and to a lesser degree TV news) means that the offended party can speak more easily and that you can hear them more easily. That's all.

And I'm not convinced this isn't offensive, either. White people painting themselves black and wearing afro wigs isn't cool. On the grand scheme of things, it's not a big deal, but it's not okay either.

I'll agree with you that anyone not of African decent painting themselves black and wearing an afro is crossing the line. But a person wearing all black clothes, a black ball cap, and painting their face black (not blackface) should be acceptable if It's done for school spirit. However, I'd like to point out that the person that 'thought' a body or skeleton being hung as a Halloween decoration referenced lynchings was probably reaching. People of all skin colors have been hung or lynched in every country on Earth throughout history so it is not unique to slavery in America. Likewise, there is not a single country, or ethnicity on Earth that has not engaged in slavery so it is not unique to America.

Agreed there (though for all we know the neighbors had a history. Who knows.) I just don't understand the idea that the guy had some duty to keep it up if the neighbor was wrongly offended. Saying "gee, you're pissed off by this? I don't see it, but sorry, lemme take it down" doesn't mean you lose.

That is a valid point, but people most people don't take the time to discuss things rationally and come to an agreeable conclusion. Thank you for clarifying your earlier points, and I'm glad we could come to an understanding.

Glad to be of service. How mad can I be at someone who posts the frontier psychiatrist video? That thing rules.

I sound fat: This is the kind of thing where the University just needs to pull little amelia aside and tell her to stop rabble rousing over nothing.

In less than 4 years, shes going to have to have a JOB somewhere, if she considers this an accomplishment, shes going to have a rough go when asked to produce things.

Its something the school has a DUTY to amelia to do.

Racist and misogynist. Want to say something homophobic and complete the trifecta?

I do have to say that maybe a better option would be to just instruct security to prevent entry to anybody wearing black face paint.

2012-10-04 06:23:16 PM
Eh. The face paint isn't a problem, but if there were people with 'fro wigs, yeah, they crossed the line to "you dumbass."

pion: I do have to say that maybe a better option would be to just instruct security to prevent entry to anybody wearing black face paint.

Only if it's across the entire face. Partial face paint might be mistaken for the dudes from that Star Trek episode, but probably not for Al Jolson.
