Ah yes, the Hebrews/Jews/Israelis. For thousands of years, they've been one of the smallest nations the world has ever known. Yet every attempt by their enemies to destroy them has failed.

I was talking to a shopkeeper in Jerusalem a few years ago about his family history. His summary - "My family, we are Muslim. Before that we were Christian. Before that we were Jews. Before that we were Canaanites. Before that..." and then he shrugged and smiled.

I love this guy's singing voice. In an age of heavy background music and Autotune, it's wonderful to hear a guy who can carry a song on just his vocals alone.

That's Andy Williams. He died this week.

I don't share your opinion. Not one bit.

Did anyone catch whether they had the Arabs or Jewish people shoot first after the British brought the tanks in? I couldn't pause fast enough.

Why is the guy with the gems on his chest so familiar-looking
That's some holy relic, isn't it?

Seriously? Watch it closely. It's nonstop killing until the British take over after WWII, and then a slight pause where it looks like one side is finally willing to surrender and live in peace while another side will hold fire... and then the killing just goes into overdrive.

It's actually a crucial point in the narrative, and it matters to know which side is being portrayed as the aggressor at that point.

Ahh, thank you. Neat story, although it lost me with the "magic worm" being used to engrave gems too hard to be cut by normal means. I can't imagine where that idea came from.

I knew I've seen it somewhere, but not from Indiana Jones. Dang it...
Recent news, Israel, priests, bible, paintings... argh

I love how everyone cares about blame and cause rather than trying to decide what to do to sort out the mess.

It's the entire reason the middle east will never be stable until the day people try to put the past behind them and work together for their own future.

The aggressor after the British was, remains, and always has been everyone except the Jews.

btw, Toronto peeps: The Projection Booth is going to show Sita Sings the Blues sometime in November. We're working out a date.

Nina's work is awesome, and it's triply awesome because of her CC licensing, which allows one to remix the footage, like, say, this trippy little number

Andy Williams, who recently died. The original piece was an instrumental, written in 1960 for the film 'Exodus' by composer Ernest Gold, who won an Oscar for it. It's still considered one of the greatest film scores ever written, and Ferrante and Teicher's album-length dual piano interpretation was one of the best-selling and most durable recordings of the period. (I've got a copy of it myself, somewhere.) The lyrics were added a year later by extremely white pop singer Pat Boone, which he titled "The Exodos Song (This Land is Mine)." Several covers followed. Williams' just happens to be the finest of them. I like to feel that he did it in an attempt to fix some of the damage Boone had done by adding the words in the first place, because he's at least a much better singer.

O grow up. My mother was an historian, an actual expert in this stuff, and she would have told you to go to hell for saying such a stupid thing. Absolutely everone involved has been a douchebag, including us.

Seriously, all of you drop this ridiculous argument. IT DOES NOT MATTER. Everyone involved has blood on their hands. Who hit who first is an argument for two-year-olds, not grown-ups. What matters -- the ONLY thing that matters at this point -- is how to stop it, once and for all.

Just for the record, I agree with you - the fighting will never stop if neither side is willing to not retaliate - I was only answering the freeze-frame question.

This video could apply to almost any part of the world, really. Europeans and Americans are so accustomed to peace that they've forgotten that they too have centuries of bloody conflict buried in their soil.

I kind of figured, but I wanted to make a general statement, because I wasn't sure. Sorry for sidescatter.

If you've read your Bible, the Jews shot first plenty of times, so to speak.

You know, once upon a time, that whole region was once as heavily wooded as the Pacific Northwest. Now it's Death's litterbox.
