AliceBToklasLives: Ok, we can quote the Old Testament and ignore the fact that it is trumped by the New. And the New is clear: a 'Biblical marriage' is nearly a contradiction in terms, as Paul clearly says (I Corinthians 7...) marriage is only for folks who just can't control themselves. It is certainly not something a Christian should be promoting.

Well, given the level of self-control I've seen here on Fark, I'd say Paul had the right idea.

Pretty much. It's also important to remember that many Christians are in fact pro-gay-marriage. These are the ones whose take-home message from their church is about love, acceptance and being neighbourly. It's the Christians who insist Jesus' central point was "all those arse-bandits should be nailed to a tree" that I have a problem with.

BATMANATEE: Mr. Chicken has the right to his opinion, free speech and and all that. Using corporate profits to fund "beat the gay out of them" organizations isn't speech. It's been a decade or so since I read the Bible cover to cover (skimmed the begats) but I remember "judge not lest you be judged" being pretty important. I also remember a bit (one of Paul"s letters) being pretty explicit about the fact that persecuting sinners was unchristian and a sin. I remember this letter saying that persecution was a sin unless the perpetrators were supposed christians twisting the scriptures to fit their own unchristian ends. It seems that persecuting Mr. Chicken is the christian thing to do, according to the Bible, for anyone who has ever read it.

You're mixing your Testaments. The whole "judge not" stuff is the new-age stuff. The rapey/stabby stuff is the original version.

These people are much better Jews than they are Christians.

Of course there are is a minority of full-retard Jews in Israel who are horrific to women and are extremely intolerant violent idiots, but this seems much rarer among western Jews than among western Christians and western Muslims.

/possible conclusion is that religions can be pretty farked up at about 1500 years of age, somewhat improved by 2000 years of age and seem to have shown considerable further improvement by what, about 6000 years?

soporific: Lionel Mandrake: Jesus H Christ!

DO CHRISTIANS EVER ACTUALLY READ THE BIBLE???

Plenty of us do, but you don't hear much about the Christians who don't spend every waking hour obsessing over gay marriage. Some of us are even support it. You don't hear about the Christians who aren't giant attention whores because they're too busy actually following the teachings of Jesus: not being a dick to others, not making a spectacle of your faith, that sort of thing. So yes, there are plenty out there, they just don't get press because they don't get ratings.

If you were as common as you say you were, these issues wouldn't be defeated on ballots regularly. Though the fact that we even have to vote on "Do homosexuals deserve the same civil rights as everyone else?" is mind boggling, and shouldn't even be a thing.

I'm not sure I'm getting you, but if I understand your previous references to xians in this thread you're either accusing me of claiming to be Christian (I'm a former moderate Christian, now avowed atheist who normally takes the opportunity to bash all religions but for whatever reason I'm having a really mellow day) or you're suggesting no real Christians can be pro gay marriage, in which case you're very wrong even though you're statistically well on the money as far as the majority goes. Or you're just having a go at me in which case I'm being oversensitive and have a nice day.

Jello Fever: or daughters raping their father!

Genesis 19:

30 Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave.
31 One day the older daughter said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is no man around here to give us children-as is the custom all over the earth.
32 Let's get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line through our father."
33 That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him. He was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.
34 The next day the older daughter said to the younger, "Last night I slept with my father. Let's get him to drink wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him so we can preserve our family line through our father."
35 So they got their father to drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. Again he was not aware of it when she lay down or when she got up.
36 So both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their father.
37 The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab[g]; he is the father of the Moabites of today.
38 The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi[h]; he is the father of the Ammonites of today.

This, by the way, is about five minutes after God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah for teh buttsex.

Actually, it was because they were having sex with angels and God didn't want any more half-breeds running around so he smote them. Buttsex is not referenced at all in the original text.
