K.B.O. Winston: Rent Party: gunther_bumpass: browntimmy: StrangeQ: browntimmy: quality TV.

Hate to break it to you, but that is a contradiction.

So what you're saying is it's impossible for a team of people to create a half hour or hour long visual narrative of any value whatsoever? If your beef is with commercials, it's 2012, there's ways around that now.

Of course it's not impossible, but as a mere viewer you are contributing -zero- to society.

Does the same apply to people that go to museums or sporting events?

Without demand for these products, they would not be created in the first place.

I'm looking forward to when he follows his train of thought to the logical conclusion about films and books as well.

/blanket statements dismissing an entire medium don't make you sound intelligent
//just insecure
///hell, even Newton Minnow pointed out how good Twilight Zone was

I'm not dismissing an entire medium. I'm saying that his premise "being on Fark (and most of the internet) is a bigger waste of time than quality TV" was false. Perhaps my initial phrasing was too obtuse.

Extending that line of thinking from a for-profit television drama to visiting a museum
is ridiculous, as the two are nothing alike. Pretty much anything other than watching television
has a higher potential for enrichment. That doesn't mean that television can't be enriching,
but if you can't concede even that, well, fark, good luck to you ya gibbering first-year philosopher.

And Twilight Zone was good, it was just surrounded by a decade of crap on either side.

.... and since when does Fark agree with the FCC?

/disclaimer: i work in film, fully aware of the damage I'm doing.

FirstNationalBastard: The Banana Thug: FirstNationalBastard: They wind up watching something decent, like Mad Men?

I'm sure you'll get a couple of bites with that. Mad Men is overrated. A decent show, but nowhere in the same league as Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones.

I watched the first season of Breaking Bad.

Breaking Bad is nowhere near as good as the hype and fanboys would have you believe.

I thought that, too.

I'm not a TV guy and only picked up the DVDs because they were on sale and my sister had been pushing me.

It picks up as it goes along and I actually ended up watching the last season as it aired and tolerated the commercials. Something I haven't done in 15 years.

"Game of Thrones" precedes "Breaking Bad" on Sundays, plus it repeats.

Imma so old... when we were little, we had a TV which was really old THEN. Well, when someone wanted to be a passive-aggressive dick, they'd set the channel and pull out the channel knob and just hide it.

The thing popped in and out easily. The way it worked, you couldn't even turn it with a screwdriver, it was an unslotted, keyed shaft. And it was set too far back to even grip with pliers. Without it that exact item, there wasn't any way you'd ever change the channel unless that person ponied it back up. And there was only one TV in the house here, and back in those days they didn't replay a lot of things on TV. A lot of them were one-shot things and of course it long predated Youtube, bittorrent, or DVD collections.

Fun trivia: the actor who played Viserys Targaryen (Harry Lloyd) also had a role in a Doctor Who episode. Equally creepy characters both times. Dude is very good at communicating the creepy.

//Lloyd played the possessed student (the "son" in the hunting family), gets all scarecrow-y at the end
///small world: the actor playing the little Jeremy student in that ep also plays Jojen Reed in GoT

Jon iz teh kewl: so order a spare part from the manufacturer for $1.50

that was like a day's pay back in the olden days. And it took 3 weeks for it to get there (No UPS/FedEx)

We had a very similar TV when I was growing up. I'd do the exact same shiat to my sister on Saturday mornings to prevent her from contaminating my eyeballs with The Smurfs.

This sort of shiat is what police deal with most of the day, when they aren't dealing with cracked out meth heads and belligerent drunks.

No wonder they start beating the shiat out of random people.

This is a bit off topic, but is anyone else watching "World Without End"? It's sort of GoT with the tits left to the imagination, and on a smaller budget.

After the abomination that was Pillars of the Earth, I'm reluctant, but I have to watch, so I will.

I've got 5 episodes to watch, I hope they don't fark it all up like they did with the first book.

The first episode of Breaking Bad was a pretty good lead in. By mid-season it kind of slowed down a bit to just character development. I was ready to quit by then but my son kept pushing me to keep watching. Well, by mid-season 2, I was hooked. That character growth is necessary for the huge payouts from the next 4 seasons. Plus, I would've never known Skinny Pete can jam on the keyboard. Blew me away!!

I haven't read the books, but the series starts slow and picks up ep 3 or 4. There is potential.

Breaking Bad is depressing as fk. Great show but depressing. Also some of the shiat like the chemical explosion at that crazy guys den is just goofy.

Game of thrones rocks but farming slow n killing all hood characters.

Game of Thrones-yes. Breaking Bad-boring.

meanmutton: Counterpointercounterpoint: The boobies in GoT are way sexier than the boobies in the vast majority of porn.

GoT has fake boobies and real boobies. Just like porn. The shear quantity of free internet porn boobies make it easy enough to find something better than GoT, and you don't have to wait a week in the hopes you might catch a glimpse with porn. This all fails the real world test of "boobies I can touch > boobies on TV" though.

Hot Carl To Go: Counterpointercount: it's a way to get the missus to look at naked chicks with me

Don't be a wimp, just ask her to watch porn with you if that's what you want. You'd be surprised how many women would be all for it.

clyph: frepnog: But it wasn't impressive enough to bother coming back for season 2.

In my experience, season 2 is usually when shows take off. If the first season has promise, season 2 usually rocks. They usually don't jump the shark or start coasting until seasons 5 or 6. ST:TNG, B5, ST:DS9, Buffy, revived Dr Who, Big Bang Theory, Mad Men, among many many others

Only show I can think of off the top of my head that had a promising first season and immediately jumped the shark in S2 was Dark Angel.

That wasn't entirely Dark Angels fault, I mean having a show about a dystopian fascist police state in the near future following a major terrorist attack on us soil was fine in 2000, early 2001, but then it all hit a little close to home so they retooled it a bit and made it about mutants.
