"[Actor Stephen] Baldwin has been an outspoken detractor of President Obama and gay marriage - calling the latter 'unconstitutional' and once threatening to move to Canada upon the election of the former."

Yeah, moving to a country that has nationally legalized same-sex marriage. That'll show 'em!

Meh, he'll overlook the nationally legalized same-sex marriage to escape the creeping horrors of socialism, such as nationalized health care and gun restrictions. It's not just about social issues, you know.

I've actually looked into Canada's immigration policies and naturalization requirements. And my reaction was, "yeah, I SO do not meet their standards."

Unless I'm misremembering their 'must have' list.

That still leaves the US with 4 1/2 Baldwin brothers.

1) Can you milk a moose?
2) Can you drink 24 beers and still cook one pound of back bacon without burning yourself?
3) Do you love and respect the beaver?
4) Do you find anything Rick Mercer's says to actually be funny?
5) Do you think the Trailer Park boys is actually a documentary?

3) The 'beaver?' Are you being literal? I don't love the animal, but I have a healthy respect for wildlife.
4) Who?
5) Trailer Park what?

The best I can do for you is a 6 month work Visa. Americans always get tripped up by the beaver question. Canadians love and respect the beaver no matter what context the term is being used.

I expect roughly the same number of people will leave if Obama wins a second term as the number of people who left after Bush won a second term.

That. At least it made sense when liberals threatened to go to Canada in 2004---they'd be moving to a more liberal country which is more in line with their politics. These conservatives would be a lot less happy up there.

/not that I'm discouraging them from leaving the country.

2012-10-03 11:00:25 AM
Aren't these the same idiots who said they were moving when Obama won the first time? Why the hell are they still here?

And why should we take them seriously this time around?

Yes, conservatives, flee to a nation that's even more liberal than ours. Good idea.

Well....I've watched a few episodes of "The Red Green Show" on PBS. Does that count for anything?

Speaking as a Canadian... Please don't. Anyone who'd move out of their country simply because a different party is in the White House isn't someone we want up here.

Thanks anyway!

We basically import two kinds of people here. The best, brightest, the wealthiest...(Unfortunately, Bigot Baldwin fits in here), and the poor, the downtrodden, the oppressed.

Regular, average, every-day John Q. Farkup, no immigratey unless you're marrying someone.

2012-10-03 11:03:50 AM
I guess these people didn't notice when the people claiming they'd do this because they were left-wing and didn't like Bush (which at least made some degree of logical sense) were universally derided as stupid?

Yeah, not helping by doing the same thing but adding that you'd move to a country generally further to the left over us electing a president slightly to the left.

"[Actor Stephen] Baldwin has been an outspoken detractor of President Obama and gay marriage - calling the latter 'unconstitutional' and once threatening to move to Canada upon the election of the former."

Actor/musician/celebrity disagrees with republican policies: "Who cares what some hollywood type thinks?"
Actor/musician/celebrity agrees with republican policies: "Lets put him on TV to show that the cool people like us."

To be honest, the only opinion I care about from Stephen Baldwin is what he's going to do to get Jayne Cobb and Firefly back on the air, a plan which would preferably involve Wash coming back to life.

I can remember people threatening to move to France should Reagan be elected.

What about gay people? Is the U.S. oppressive enough to gay people to accept me? Pwweeeeeaaaase?

Why move to Canada.. just wait a few more years and the U.S. will be pretty much the same.

Building giant walls on your southern border to keep out the invading masses seems a lot more reasonable now doesn't it?

While I do respect the beaver, I can relate much more with Wally. How does that rank me on Canuk-O-Scale?

\Actually already lived in Canada so they'll probably welcome me back with open arms, damn Snow Mexicans and their creepy politeness.

If I had the money, I'd be there already. I'd be able to ake my job with me and work remotely for my company in Scandinavia, I've got a good number of friends there, and did you feel the damned humdity out this morning?! In October?

2012-10-03 11:09:12 AM
If Rmoney wins, I don't think I want to live in a country that could elect such a person. If my grandmother could leave Poland to give her children and grandchildren a better future, I honor her memory by doing the same.

But it's hard to move to Canada. We looked into buying property last year. The only way to do it that we could see was to borrow money from a Canadian bank, and, we had to own property in the US that we had to go back to at the least every 6 months. The Canadian government didn't want us overstaying our welcome. So I don't know how one retires to Canada.

they tightened them after the 2004 Bush reelection. Srsly. Probably just to keep the Baldwins out.

Let's see...

1. Start own country
2. Brag to rest of world about how awesome your country is
3. Royally screw up that country
4. Attempt to move to country that isn't screwed up
5. Complain how the harsh immigration requirements violate your basic human rights!

I don't understand the threat to move to Canada. I thought all the conservatives were buying up Costa Rica.

If things in the TSA/DHS/Patriot Act/Voter ID/Rape-ublicans path continue much further, it won't be America we'd be threatening to leave...

*looks that up*
There were about 1000 extra Americans that year. About an 11% increase. Also there are are way more going the other way (34k born here 73k total), but a third of those intended to come back.

Dont worry, there will be the occasional narrow openings that anyone under 200 pounds can fit through.
