B-b-b-b-b-but the pet food industry just has to buy that cheap lead and melamine-laced crap from China, or those poor stockholders won't get their dividends!

Please, think of the stockholders.

This bad and these people should feel bad. When I had a dog I drove 50 miles out of my way to get healthy grain-free kibble for him. There are plenty of options available, no one is forcing you to feed the dog cheap shiat.

The event wasn't entirely serious, however, as the attendees signed a 'pawtition' and were given free samples of healthy dog food that is produced by organizing partners.

fark you, viral advertising. I'm going to specifically not buy your product now.

If you are buying 50lb bags of "Kibbles N Bits" or "Old Yeller" from the grocery store, quit buying the cheap shiat and shut your yaphole. You are part of the problem.

Is there something preventing these owners from cooking nutritionally balanced meals for their dogs? Then they could use whatever organic ingredients they wanted.

There is a FB page I go to where people post recipes and pics of the meals they are making its kind of "Foodie" page I guess, there is this one guy on there who makes his own dog food and posts pics of it. It still looks like table scraps but apparently its healthy. But most people dont have the time to feed their real kids healthy meals let alone their pets

Slightly off topic, but I woke up this morning to see that one of the cats had pissed in the dog's bowl. I don't know what they're trying to tell him.

Come for the photos of jorts-wearing trust fund assholes who don't work but can't find time to cook some bland cheap dog-appropriate food, stay for the inane comments about dogs and cats being able to eat "dry food vegan" despite the fact that the latter are obligate carnivores and the former are a hell of a lot healthier given good protein and fats.

Be careful with that Blue Buffalo stuff, its got a ton of sodium and many dogs have trouble digesting it.

Hills Science Diet, otoh, really impresses me with the quality and research that goes into making their food. If your dog has any health problems, from digestive to fur, a good dog food can make all the difference.

Oh, you mean the hobos criminals that city PD departments were proven to have encouraged to join the campsites? Or do you mean the undercover cops who went to the camps and did their best to incite criminal behavior?

As a matter of fact, I was exposed to them. Unlike you, I visited Occupy camps in three major cities and day protests in several towns, because I wanted to evaluate it for myself. In every instance I found orderly, well-run, CLEAN parks with organized tents for food, sanitation, and medical aid. Oh, and a huge police presence, which was universally treated well, if cautiously (understandibly), by the protesters.

But no, you go ahead and believe what you were told to believe. I'm sure the 1% will be along with your reward any time now.

Rather than protesting pet food, why not protest puppy mills?

I adopt strays, I do not buy dogs or cats. Why I should pay hundreds of dollars for a purebred that is more likely to have health problems than a stray or shelter animal is beyond me.

We drive 30+ minutes to get Taste of the Wild for our dogs. We also supplement their food with venison. Protesting and demanding better quality dog food is really just showing your own laziness. There is also the option of RAW.

THIS site is quite beneficial in determining the quality of the dog food you are feeding.

LandOfChocolate: Be careful with that Hills Science Diet stuff, most of it is corn and animal by products, not actual meat

When one of my Cairn Terriers turned 12 she quit on a long walk and I had to carry her home. I took her to the vet, he said the dog had heart problems, gave me a pill to give her every day and strongly suggested I feed her one of those Hills Science Diet
varieties. The first day she doesn't eat it, but eats some the second day. On the third day mrs varmitydog mixes in some other dry dog food with it. A little later she calls me into the kitchen where the dog eats. The dog had dumped the bowl out and strewn the dog food all across the floor and was picking through the food, eating the dry dog food and leaving the Hills Science Diet. So that was the end of Hills Science Diet for us.

That is the site that made me aware of the crap I was feeding my dog (Beneful - don't judge, I didn't know any better at the time!). After a bit of research I switched her food to a "6 Star" food immediately.

My dog only eats natural food....by dragging a deer corpse up into the yard and chewing on it for the next couple of weeks.

Once we had a chest freezer full of beef go bad (got unplugged) so he got to eat that for a couple of months.

Science Diet is one of the lowest rated foods out there. It's all corn, and animal biproducts.

Yes, your vet is going to recommend it, because SD has their reps peddling their crap to the vets, and pay them to promote it.

Here in Houston there is a chain of stores called Natural Pawz. They carry several grain free brands that are produced in the US. When you want to give food or chew treats, stay away from anything that's made in China. Because there are no real standards for pet food in this country, crap gets shipped here, and if there are recalls, it's quietly done, if at all. And if there is a recall on those items, places like Wal-mart have been know to just keep them on the shelves.

We moved away from grain free, and went raw for a while. There is a brand, Stella and Chewy's, that specialize in raw, both in freeze dried and wet patties. It does get very pricey, but we noticed a change in our dogs because they weren't just full of corn and other grains.

You can also spend a little time and cook their food. But if you do, be sure they have hard chew toys on the side to help clean their teeth.

Right now we feed our fosters that come in to our home Merrick's, and some of them Fromms.

Are people's dogs really that picky that they demand organic food? We currently feed our puppy Nutro Ultra, but he would probably eat saw dust mixed with cat food if that was in his bowl.

I'm all for making sure he is happy and healthy, but it's stupid to think the best way to do this is to pay some hipster who makes animal food in his kitchen.

Yep. Same here until it was finally being sold in my city. The dog food out there, in grocery stores or even petsmart, etc is crap. It really is, and they should stop making it. But just about everyone I know right now buys the holistic grain-free... you can get it at several smaller pet stores; it might be a tad more expensive but it's worth it.

Just because they would eat shiat doesn't mean you should feed them shiat. Look at people who eat at McDonald's every day. The majority of brand name dog foods sold at the supermarket are just as caloricly dense and nutritionally lacking.

(not mine, of course)

Bred to guard herds of livestock. They will eat corpses to keep predators away (or something like that).

We have an adult male and a 6 month old female. I saw the female "playing" with a chipmunk in the yard. Next day I had a chipmunk head on my porch. Usually have to clean hides and bones out the yard (it looks like a grisly murder scene most of the time). But the plus side is I have lots of skulls, vertebrae, and femurs for Halloween decorations.

Aww... beautiful doggie! But they must live outside with that diet. My eyes are watering just from this conversation ; )

Or maybe the kids have been feeding mine from the table again. You know it's bad when he farts and then gets up and leaves the room like he can't stand his own stink.
