I saw those movies too. The Castaways find an old WWII plane and the Harlem Globetrotters play some robots.

I hope he doesn't think he can instantly go from a one-assed monkey to a seven-assed one. You have to work your way up.

FTFA: Oracle CEO Larry Ellison envisions his recently acquired Hawaiian island becoming a "little laboratory" for experimenting with more environmentally sound ways to live.

Because what could be more environmentally sound than a remote island dependent for almost everything on transoceanic shipping from the mainland, whose main industry requires flying in rich people to play golf, and whose primary export is shipping pineapples halfway across the Pacific? Some electric cars and a little desalination plant will make it all good.

One man having that much power just doesn't sit right with me.
I'm a supercommie socialist, I guess.

Although, it's little less depressing when they do these token "give back to humanity" efforts.

It's good that he donates money and makes speeches, but I think the people doing the work receive most of the credit. I think this supports my original point.

Well, I guess I should have mentioned communism or socialism as it exists on paper rather than its authoritarian, fascist manifestations in reality.

That bunch has about as much to do with modern democratic socialism as Adam Smith and John Locke do with modern free market economics.

I've seen this movie, since he's an IT guy, it will be an experiment creating a silicon based life form. Good thing it will be restricted to a remote island. Get the strontium injectors ready. He will have cattle on the island, right?

Larry Ellison is the one person - even accounting for Rupert Murdoch - that I can truly see owning a secret hideaway on a volcano island and running some "take-over-the-world" organization (I mean, besides Oracle). Heck, the guy even *looks* like a supervillian - heck, give him red hair, and he's the real-life version of Hank Scorpio.

If he can figure out how to use solar powered matter replicators to eliminate shipping needs, it'll all be worth it. That, or he just wants somewhere private to bury the hookers

It supports your point about Ellison, who is a narcissist and an egotist.

I don't think it's particularly good for society that one person has so much money, but Gates isn't to blame for that. And I think he deserves a lot of credit for saying "OK, the system gave me a mountain of money for doing something I loved, and now I'm going to pay that forward". Given that he's a tech geek, not a medical researcher, he's doing the best thing he possibly can given his circumstances to end malaria. How many of us can say the same? (Also, Warren Buffett deserves a lot of credit for mentoring Gates).

Sadly, this type of logic is foisted on all of us who work for Commander Larry.

It's almost as if there's a new tax dodge or government subsidy involving environmental research...
