Well, duh! I don't really care about big boobed video game characters though. I just wish they'd exaggerate their male characters in the same way. I want my male toon to have a bulging package, huge muscles, and look like an animated Tom-of-Finland sketch.

Come to think of it, they pretty much do most of that already.

As Cythraul mentioned above, male video game characters are usually not representative of male video game players any more than female video game characters are representative of female players. The female characters look like ultra-enhanced porn stars, the male characters look like roided-up pro wrestlers.

Yes. Focus a little less on the eye-candy and a little more on making it a good overall playing experience, please and thank you. I can't be bothered to give a shiat about Lara Croft's delicate jiggle when the mechanics suck too bad to keep me interested.

The problem is that the investors for game companies don't care if you PLAY the games, they only care if you BUY the games, and buy them new. There is enough demand generated by a subset of consumers that has access to their parent's disposable income to justify inclusion of jiggilty. And it doesn't even need to be in the game to generate the needed buzz. Look at the concept art for Torchlight 2. None of the in-game characters I have seen look like the female drawings.

I'd bet the actual % of people who want or buy video games due to female characters having huge fake boobs is quite low. If the game itself sucks, basically nobody is going to want to drop $60 for it.

Much easier and cheaper to just find some real fake boobs on the internet.

I always love this argument. It's not like most publishing/development houses* ever tried selling a game without the giant tits and bulging muscles , so really, how the fark do they know?

Yes, yes, they run "market research" and talk to "focus groups", but I bet if they were to release their games with decent gameplay, controls, story and visuals, without oversexualizing the characters, they'd sell just as many, if not more, copies.**

*Bethesda Softworks and BioWare are exceptions.

There aren't very many video game characters, male or female, who can stimulate your brain. Good writing is a lot harder than just slapping some tits on the model.

In all fairness, the space cow race is part deamon. So the huge breasts, small waist, and long hooved legs makes some sense.

As to the overall point, DoA is cherry picking. Anyone remember Trish from Devil May Cry. Tell me she is not a beautiful character. Also, the tomb raider reboot features a much more realistic figure. Looks a little like my wife ifbshe could tan.

Light "armor" isn't really armor, it's just clothing. ArenaNet even said that they tried to avoid the whole "boobplate" thing and make the heavier armor look at least somewhat reasonable. That's why in GW2 cloth armor tends toward the revealing more than medium which tends toward the revealing more than heavy. That cloth robe isn't going to stop a blade, so it doesn't really matter if it doesn't cover the midriff.

Well, initially video games had to exaggerate secondary sexual characteristics pretty hard because they were, essentially, cartoons and art styles approaching photorealism would have made it unclear to the audience whether the character was even male or female. Even nowadays it's not intended for titillation in most cases so much as it's an artistic shorthand to say something about the character.

Basically, arbitrarily large shoulders, abdominal muscles visible, jaw unrealistically square is shorthand for traditional machismo, an unrealistic hourglass figure is shorthand that the character is supposed to be sexually active and attractive, very minimal secondary sexual characteristics (thin shoulders, small breasts) indicate that the character is young, a rounded back and stooped shoulders means they're old, a large belly means they're passionate and at least moderately jovial, wide eyes means innocence, and so on.

The other tool for giving a cartoon personality is body language, but given the limitations of art and animation you're a bit limited there. Beyond a wide stance for action types and a closed one for meek types, there's not a lot you can do to give a cartoon personality without having them overtly flex at the camera or verbally state their character.

I mean, there certainly are porn games and characters designed as fetish fuel more than actual characters (hello, literally everything from a non-Nintendo company based in Japan), but that's not really the majority of why you're going to see it. You'll mostly see it for the same reason that female lizard-aliens on Star Trek had cleavage and Betty Boop was shaped like a literal hourglass-- it just allows the audience to know something about the character (most commonly simply that they're female or feminine in some way) without making the writer stick in a monologue giving their psych evaluation like a damned moron.

My problem with WvW is the asinine level of strategy. When your team just keeps rushing a fort without any siege weapons and basically just gets slaughtered perpetually at the gates, while you continually type "WTF guys, why do you just keep rushing and dying?" and get told off, it loses luster.

I suppose it depends on the server, then? Tainted Coast seems to at least be fairly good at coordinating stuff like that (And listening to people who've shown they know what they're doing). I've even seen "Okay. We're going to attack this heavily defended fort. Go for the ballistas. This will draw them away from their supply depot. I need a group to hit that before we pull back, then it's just a waiting game until they run out of stuff to repair their walls with."

... that miiiiighhht be why we were able to beat the pants of the Goon server (which I think is Maguma?), now that I think of it. I was wondering why they weren't just *creaming* us with superior numbers.

Real life heard you and now boobs (and everything else) are bigger!!!

2012-10-03 01:52:39 PM
There used to be a few MMOs that allowed customers to radically tweak their characters' body shapes. Bust size, waist circumference, arm size, etc. It was done as a hat tip to complaints about unrealistic body types being "forced" on impressionable young players.

Rather than result in the egalitarian, "real" cross-section of body types they expected, men built superhero proportioned dudes and women built huge-breasted, tiny-waisted Barbies. It was so disturbing and embarrassing, games rarely do it anymore.

Because it turns out that for all the whining about unrealistic cultural norms re: beauty, people play games to "escape" from reality, and many people, when playing an ostensibly human character, want to look more in line with supposedly "unfair" societal expectations of beauty when given the chance than less.

It's just like all the focus groups around men's underwear packaging. People joke that they would sell more if they were covered with nearly naked women instead of ripped half-naked dudes, but they've focus grouped the hell out of it, and men's subconscious desire to look like the dudes on the packaging motivates them to buy product more than anything else. Otherwise they wouldn't do it.

ah yes, the Mascarade light sets. It's a rare crafted set you can make starting around lv 35 or so. It's...an odd set.

Not the most showy one though. the Winged and Feathered sets show more skin, with winged being one of the most T&A armor sets in the game. It doesn't even try to be modest, showing visable panties and bra elements. The Feathered set just shows off a great deal of boobs, but has a more modest bottom element.

Interestingly, a lot of the female artists at arenanet were actually in favor of such designs. they thought it made the characters look sexy. The topic came up at PAX last year.

Now, Leather sets are the polar opposite, with most covering you head to toe. Plate sets are all over the map.

Female norn armor really isn't more showing them male norn armor. However, female norns can have some seriously bib breasted/wide ships thing going on, and the normal armor sets tend to look a bit more showy as a result. The starting caster set is one giant panty shot for them due to the size of the models.

As for the DOA thing, the demo had a feedback option, and well, the fanbase didn't like the smaller breast sizes the demo girls had. Japanese female designs are weird, in that the fanbase tends to favor ether large breasts, or very small ones, but rarely in between.

We Americans are the unwanted flotsam and jetsam of the world. Puritans, lunatics, poor, Irish, political radicals, etc... everyone that someone else wanted out of the Old Country. Of course we're screwed up.

Felgraf: Aaah. I admit I'm on a server that seems to be doing fairly well, so.. that probably *is* part of it, yes.

I'm seriously considering a transfer to a good server. I spent years in WoW on the backwater nowhere server "Blackwater Raiders". PvP was crap, raid progression was crap and it was a RP server that didn't even do any RP.... I will not be a loser again...

...says the guy worried about the notoriety of his little digital doll

But, anyway, yea, WvW is great. Even if you're not into actually doing it right the badass fights that break out at chokepoints, towers, etc. are awesome. In WoW with something like WG you only got really badass fights in the Keep after the walls came down or when one side was just getting completely pounded and was camped at their spawn point. In GW2 WvW, though, the epic fights seem to break out more regularly while still allowing enough open map to avoid them and play strategically if you want.

There aren't very many video game characters, male or female, who can stimulate your brain. Good writing is a lot harder than just slapping some tits on the model.

Fans of a certain video game series known for having female characters with enormous breasts(Dead or Alive), happen to enjoy the fact the game has characters with enormous breasts. According to the developer fans have actually asked for this aspect of the game to be more prominent.

We'll dig deeper tonight at 11.

Allegedly a tranny in Final Fight lore for North America (someone thought beating up a tranny was more palpable than beating up a genuine female -- didin't Double Dragon have the whip chicks before this game?).

Also, video game women with too much clothes ... King from the King of Fighters (yes, it's a girl, not a male blackjack dealer as some dude in an arcade once commented; later games made her breasts stand out more so people would ID her as a female) and the Adeptus Sororitas from Warhammer 40K come to mind.

Poison is a guy as stated by Yoshinori Ono

Pre-op tranny in Japan
Post-op tranny in America

However Capcom's official position is "whatever you think s/he is, you are correct." So if you think Poison is a guy, he is. If you think Poison is a girl, she is.

Since Ono is the one currently in charge of the character, it's a guy. Thank the wonderful American censors for that little problem.

Amazing that you can put out a game like NARC where you beat up hookers and crack clowns and that is okay, but Final Fight had to change the gender of one of their characters to get approved

Same. I love me some big titties. I don't understand why people cry baby about this all the time. It's no different than liking girls with long legs, or short girls (or tall girls) or blondes. It's just that tits are overtly sexual in nature, so that makes it BAD. At least in America, not so much in other countries.

Because boob size is now basically considered the only thing that matters about female sexiness and a giant pair of stretched out hard number basketballs with wall eyed flat nipples is considered always better than a pair of perky C cups with perfect nips. And there's no in-betweens, there's only "big" and "flat" for the two categories. If a girl isn't big, she's considered completely flat.

Because really, that seems to be your only complaint, unless you want to go down the route of infantilzing my wife (or all women in general) by assuming that she is incapable of making her own decisions for her own mental/emotional/physical well being and needs someone else to do it for her. The general attitude here is, "It's too bad that she's listening to (pick one) TV, magazines, movies, her abusive boyfriend/husband, pop culture instead of ME, the divine font of all that is good for every woman on the planet." Better known as the "freedom to choose, but only what I agree with" brand of feminism.

I find this particular brand of self-shaming quite amusing, because the rejoinder is quite obvious: "So, she's making bad decisions and needs someone to tell her what to do for her own well being? You mean, like a MAN? You've come a long way baby."

medium armor seems ok as well.

ah yes, the Mascarade light sets.

It's amazing how you imagined I meant/said all that. You seem to have a kneejerk response memorised for all the times people have said anything to you after bragging about your wife's boobs online. So you both have a sexual fetish that requires she gets surgery. Big deal. You are a feminist crusader. You should get over being so defensive about it if you're going to post about it on the internet. I'm sure if she lost them for some reason you would still have sex with her.

My only issue is that basically all women these days are expect to have large non-natural breasts in order for any male to find them sexually attractive in spite of pain or health problems.

And yes, 34D is very flat for a small sized woman these days. I'm glad you've got me totally figured out.

Thing is, gaming isn't for 14 year old boys any longer. The average gamer age is now 35. The problem is that the video game industry hasn't caught up with that.

I don't even mind if female characters are sexy, but just don't make them look like Victoria Secret's Models. Dress them how a woman going into battle would dress.

If you want some lulz, look at a time lapse of each consecutive release of EverQuest and all its expansions. The original cover art was normal, and each progressive release focused more on the female elf with larger and larger boobs, until it was just unrealistically silly.

If you want some lulz, look at a time lapse of each consecutive release of EverQuest and all its expansions. The original cover art was normal, and each progressive release focused more on the female elf with larger and larger boobs, until it was just unrealistically silly.

CSB:

I met the original model for the blonde EQ elf back in 2001 or so. It was a pretty cool story: She had done some modeling work, and the artist (Elmore, if I recall) wound up using some of that as reference for the character, without telling her. And so her mother was in a store one day and spotted the cover for EverQuest and saw her daughter on the cover. She called to congratulate her daughter, and she was shocked... she had never consented to being in the artwork, or even been approached for it. She called up Sony/Verant and wound up making an official deal.

She's super-hot and proportioned pretty much exactly how she looked in the artwork. Though to be fair, she was there to promote EQ and be a spokesmodel, and all she could talk about was how she got the job.

Unrealistic elves? Next someone is going to tell me Everquest's magic is unrealistic too.

I admit that I installed the patch to watch Laura Croft's boobies bounce in the original Tomb Raider.

Now I'm older, I get all the boobies I need from FARK threads.

/so post 'em comma dammit

They've done this for more than 5 iterations, and just now you've got a bug up your ass about it?
I'm sorry, no.

For that sort of people, they've always had a bug up there, it's just that it's pissed at different things at different times. Typical rage addict.
