Well, duh! I don't really care about big boobed video game characters though. I just wish they'd exaggerate their male characters in the same way. I want my male toon to have a bulging package, huge muscles, and look like an animated Tom-of-Finland sketch.

Come to think of it, they pretty much do most of that already.

As Cythraul mentioned above, male video game characters are usually not representative of male video game players any more than female video game characters are representative of female players. The female characters look like ultra-enhanced porn stars, the male characters look like roided-up pro wrestlers.

So, in essence, video games suffer from "Liefeld Syndrome"?

I do find it annoying when a halfway decent game is ruined / makes you look like a creep for playing it by being stuffed full of un-necessary up-skirt, boob-jiggle and other distractions from actual gameplay.

Yes. Focus a little less on the eye-candy and a little more on making it a good overall playing experience, please and thank you. I can't be bothered to give a shiat about Lara Croft's delicate jiggle when the mechanics suck too bad to keep me interested.

Give me Alyx Vance or FemShep anyday. Intelligence, determination and quality voice work trump giant floppy tits IMO. Though the bouncy tits mod for Fallout 3 is good for a larf.

The problem is that the investors for game companies don't care if you PLAY the games, they only care if you BUY the games, and buy them new. There is enough demand generated by a subset of consumers that has access to their parent's disposable income to justify inclusion of jiggilty. And it doesn't even need to be in the game to generate the needed buzz. Look at the concept art for Torchlight 2. None of the in-game characters I have seen look like the female drawings.

Who really cares about bigger boobs that isn't a pre-teen? It was seen as hot back then, but comical now.

2012-10-03 12:11:56 PM
Phrases I have never heard:

"Half-life 2 would have been totally awesome if they'd given Alyx huge knockers."

"You know why World of Warcraft is so addictive? Two words: Goblin jubblies."

"Why do people still buy Mario games? Peach doesn't even have realistic jiggle physics."

I can only imagine how narrow the demographic is they're listening to for feedback.

I'm more bothered by the "boobplate" armor phenomenon in fantasy games than I am about the size of the breasts themselves. Seems like a good way to get yourself killed.

Meh. Reasonable compromise between aesthetics and plausible functionality.

Chainmail bikinis are a bridge to far though.

I'd bet the actual % of people who want or buy video games due to female characters having huge fake boobs is quite low. If the game itself sucks, basically nobody is going to want to drop $60 for it.

Much easier and cheaper to just find some real fake boobs on the internet.

Is there some other reason to play DoA apart from the boob physics? I thought that was the main reason the series existed.

I always love this argument. It's not like most publishing/development houses* ever tried selling a game without the giant tits and bulging muscles , so really, how the fark do they know?

Yes, yes, they run "market research" and talk to "focus groups", but I bet if they were to release their games with decent gameplay, controls, story and visuals, without oversexualizing the characters, they'd sell just as many, if not more, copies.**

*Bethesda Softworks and BioWare are exceptions.
**This does not apply to games where the entire point of the game is the tig ol bitties *cough DeadorAlive cough*

Big boobs suck. Strong personality is where it's at. Then again, most people are afraid of a woman who can stimulate their brain as well as their prostate so... I guess big boobies are aces.

There aren't very many video game characters, male or female, who can stimulate your brain. Good writing is a lot harder than just slapping some tits on the model.

In all fairness, the space cow race is part deamon. So the huge breasts, small waist, and long hooved legs makes some sense.

As to the overall point, DoA is cherry picking. Anyone remember Trish from Devil May Cry. Tell me she is not a beautiful character. Also, the tomb raider reboot features a much more realistic figure. Looks a little like my wife ifbshe could tan.

And as much as I love anything that even remotely resembles good writing, I also know it won't sell as well as sex, blood, and rock and roll.

Speaking of, we need more rock and roll in our games.

Light "armor" isn't really armor, it's just clothing. ArenaNet even said that they tried to avoid the whole "boobplate" thing and make the heavier armor look at least somewhat reasonable. That's why in GW2 cloth armor tends toward the revealing more than medium which tends toward the revealing more than heavy. That cloth robe isn't going to stop a blade, so it doesn't really matter if it doesn't cover the midriff.

It's not like anyone buys a game for tits, but they are a bonus, even if they're so big you've got to laugh and call the character Tits McGee.

If you're making a big deal about how they're too big or ridiculous or whatever, just go full Amish and get off of the internet already.

I do get a kick out of "too many boobs in video games" type of people that will support things like boobquake. Make up your damned minds. Do you support boobs everywhere or not?

Well, initially video games had to exaggerate secondary sexual characteristics pretty hard because they were, essentially, cartoons and art styles approaching photorealism would have made it unclear to the audience whether the character was even male or female. Even nowadays it's not intended for titillation in most cases so much as it's an artistic shorthand to say something about the character.

Basically, arbitrarily large shoulders, abdominal muscles visible, jaw unrealistically square is shorthand for traditional machismo, an unrealistic hourglass figure is shorthand that the character is supposed to be sexually active and attractive, very minimal secondary sexual characteristics (thin shoulders, small breasts) indicate that the character is young, a rounded back and stooped shoulders means they're old, a large belly means they're passionate and at least moderately jovial, wide eyes means innocence, and so on.

The other tool for giving a cartoon personality is body language, but given the limitations of art and animation you're a bit limited there. Beyond a wide stance for action types and a closed one for meek types, there's not a lot you can do to give a cartoon personality without having them overtly flex at the camera or verbally state their character.

I mean, there certainly are porn games and characters designed as fetish fuel more than actual characters (hello, literally everything from a non-Nintendo company based in Japan), but that's not really the majority of why you're going to see it. You'll mostly see it for the same reason that female lizard-aliens on Star Trek had cleavage and Betty Boop was shaped like a literal hourglass-- it just allows the audience to know something about the character (most commonly simply that they're female or feminine in some way) without making the writer stick in a monologue giving their psych evaluation like a damned moron.

My problem with WvW is the asinine level of strategy. When your team just keeps rushing a fort without any siege weapons and basically just gets slaughtered perpetually at the gates, while you continually type "WTF guys, why do you just keep rushing and dying?" and get told off, it loses luster.

I suppose it depends on the server, then? Tainted Coast seems to at least be fairly good at coordinating stuff like that (And listening to people who've shown they know what they're doing). I've even seen "Okay. We're going to attack this heavily defended fort. Go for the ballistas. This will draw them away from their supply depot. I need a group to hit that before we pull back, then it's just a waiting game until they run out of stuff to repair their walls with."

... that miiiiighhht be why we were able to beat the pants of the Goon server (which I think is Maguma?), now that I think of it. I was wondering why they weren't just *creaming* us with superior numbers.
