SlagginOff: I work in shipping and have plenty of friends from the area, so I know most of the major suburban wastelands around there.

Yes, when I think of West Bloomfield, I think "suburban wasteland". Those damn 1%-ers living in their urban wasteland!

Seriously - if they're going to put up a statue to memorialize that moment, it ought to be statue of Charles Darwin.

Or, how about, instead of a statue, signs along the stands that say "Don't lean over the walls"?

Or, how about, in addition to the statue, signs along the the stands that say "Don't lean over the walls" in addition to making the walls a bit higher with some additional safety provisions? Since that's what they did.....

I was gonna say "witchcraft" but this works, too

Ypsilanti isn't really considered a suburb of Detroit; it can also be quite a dangerous place.

Yeah, signs are only going to do so much. The additional safety provisions were necessary.

I still can't believe we haven't seen a drunken frat boy take a header off the Green Monster seats yet.

Beat me to it. That's what I get for reading the article before posting.

I understand your explanation, I just think that reasoning is stupid. The entire year, you have 2 parallel goals, win each series and make it to the postseason. Great, you've made it to the postseason, now here is a 1 game sudden death. The postseason is supposed to be a separate entity, but a 1 game playoff just feels to me like a tacked on game 163 against the 2 teams that have the best non-division winning records.

Rest assured, it will almost certainly be at least a 3 game series before long. Probably in the next CBA.

I consider it a wasteland because it is boring and bland, and filled with assholes. Mainly for the opposite reasons I consider the actual city of Detroit a wasteland.

Nats win 5-1, finalize the NL playoff picture.

Wild Card Play-in Game: STL @ ATL
Divisional Series: WSH vs Wild Card, CIN vs SF

I read that in Sean Connery's voice.

Sure, why not. Go Reds!

Why not Cards? Then maybe the Yankees can finally try to prove that they are better than St Louis...

They got last year. Besides, arguments with my local Cards fan will be more fun.

Wow. Hamilton drops an easy fly ball, 7-5 Oakland in the 4th.

Hell of an error there.

2012-10-03 05:22:08 PM
Also, side note to this game, unless Hamilton gets 2 homers in this game, Cabby is all but officially got the Triple Crown(home runs is the only category anybodys really got a shot at catching up on).

Part of me realizes that this day would have more potential for awesomeness at last year's levels without the Wild Card Game, but I don't really care. Without the WCG, entering today we'd have firmed up the NL picture (CIN vs ATL, WAS vs SF), but the AL picture would have the potential for mayhem:
NYY would have clinched a spot, and would clinch the division with a win or BAL loss.
BAL would win the division with a win and NYY loss; the wild card with a win and NYY win; would play a tiebreaker with a loss
TEX and OAK would be playing for the division, as they are, with the loser only getting a second chance if BAL lost as well.

I like the previous format better, indeed.  But if they move the new 2-team WC to a best-of-three I'd be more into it.  One game in baseball just isn't fair.  I know technically any team can beat any other team ("that's why they play 'em") in all sports... but especially so in baseball.

Hamilton strikes out in the 8th. Cabby's basically got the HR title locked up

2012-10-03 06:26:58 PM
Great.  Work's done, want to go watch the end of Texas/Oakland... and of course I can't because I live in New Orleans and therefore are in their "market".  Ugh.  And I'm paying for Extra Innings, why?

The Red Sox have one chance to screw with the Yankees this year. They'll most likely choke that away too, being the Red Sox.

If the Yankees win tonight, the Red Sox will end the year on an 8-game losing streak. I hope this happens, that would be icing on the Red Sox FAIL cake.

Time could cause a rest vs rust debate with the other teams, they don't want the division winners to have to wait 3+ days to play. One game makes it a crapshoot yes but it provides a real incentive to win your division. Remember the 2 years ago when the Yankees and Rays were both so far out in front that neither was actively trying to win the division.

If Cabby doesn't play tonight, Trout would have to go 6-for-6 to catch him in average, and I'm pretty sure nobody is even close to him in RBI's. If Cabby goes 0-4 tonight, Trout would still have to go 4-4 to catch him(doable, but unlikely).

As a bonus it also makes getting first in the league even more important as you get to go up against a wildcard team that most used their ace in the wild card game and will probably only start game 3 whereas you ace is out in games 1 and 4/5. I would guess that that is a lot more valuable than Home field in the LCS.

Yeah, he's got it all but locked up. And as I said in the other thread, it's pretty cool. Good for him.

Congrats, Oakland. I just hope that the Yankees don't run into you.....

2012-10-03 07:17:47 PM
So, as far as I can tell:

B N Thursdy Friday- Saturdy Sunday-
W W ------- TEX@BAL OAK@DET NYY@ WC
W L NYY@BAL TEX@E-L E-W@DET OAK@ WC
L W ------- BAL@TEX OAK@DET NYY@ WC
L L ------- BAL@TEX NYY@DET OAK@ WC

Oakland wins a tie with either team at 94 wins (5-4 over BAL, 5-5 vs NYY, but OAK has the better divisional record which is inexplicably the next tiebreaker). If Baltimore loses to finish on 93, Texas hosts the Wild Card game.

2012-10-03 09:55:23 PM
Oh well, that's game.
