I don't think the C-cup is going to be a difficult thing to find among D&D grognards. The female part is going to be much trickier.

It could happen again. It was greened at a point where it sat at the top of the page for quite some time, so it had that going for it, but this thread might have potential.

Oh, I think this thread will do well, but not quite as well as the inevitable debate discussion thread tonight. Just going by the GOP VP thread, the debate thread will be massive. The August 11th thread where farkers were speculating as to whom Romney would pick had over 800 comments. The thread where Romney named Ryan as his running mate had over 1,500 comments.

And the RNC (3 days) & DNC (3 days) discussion threads had massive amounts of submissions. I think we can expect that with tonight's debates since there's sure to be a discussion thread.

I ran a year and a half long CALL OF CTHULHU campaign with 1 male and 2 female regulars (with

It was. We trolled the mods, the mods trolled us, much fun was had on every level. Parallel discussions were had on myspace and googlegroups for images that we wanted to share that we didn't want everyone to see. People set up parties that happened while the thread was still active. It really was a neat coming together of like minded freaks. If I recall correctly it was also the first thread that forced pagination for TF'rs at the 500 post level.

I don't think I got a lot of sleep during that period of time, but I made a lot of new friends.

I've seen someone link to that one before, so I've had a chance to read it and marvel at the sheer wondrous geekitude. I also remember one thread where people basically wrote how they thought the star wars prequels should have gone. It didn't have massive amounts of comments, but I do remember thinking that a decent number of Farkers stories sounded much better than the actual prequels themselves.

I agree 100% with the trend toward more women being interested in gaming, and not just for the
eye-candy factor (lets face it: an ugly woman is generally a lot prettier than most male gamers). It
not only brings a different perspective to the hobby, but it also helps dispel certain gender myths
that women are always more kind and nurturing than men. At the table, you're not a man or a woman,
you're a gamer.

And that's as it should be.

Shadow Blasko: Most of the most aggressive tabletop players I know are women.

I don't know if you're praising them or just beating a stereotype that was debunked ages ago, but this is neither a revelation nor progress. I don't expect women to be softies (my wife's favorite genre is horror FFS) but I'm leery of female gamers with chips on their shoulders. Beheading the first NPC you encounter just to prove you can out-dudebro the neckbeards isn't role-playing. Lady, we're here to have fun; kindly leave the issues you had with the chauvanistic DM in your last campaign out of ours. I was bitter once too, but I grew out of being a teenager.

mhd: Shenanigans, no DM ever got treated with the "utmost respect". /Also: DM screen

This and this.

Joce678: Klivian: Having played in several gaming groups in the last few years, the stereotype is quickly fading, 6 fat guys in a basement gaming, lots of girls in the mix.

The games that I've DMed at PAX East the last few years have always contained at least one girl, if not more.

Didn't D&D always have girls? It certainly did when I played it back in the early '80s.

Yes, there have always been female gamers, but the ratio has always skewed heavily male, in part because female gamers tended to get harassed by other members of the group. The thought process was along the lines of "Zomg, a gurl! She games, that means I have a chance!" even if the only reason she even talks to him is because he's in the group, and she doesn't want to get hit with the trap that does CON damage.

Threads like this make me miss gaming, haven't had a regular game in over a year now

dragonchild: but this is neither a revelation nor progress.

Thats your opinion and you are welcomed to it.

dragonchild: I was bitter once too, but I grew out of being a teenager.

The specific gamer I had in mind is in her late 30's.

She's not bitter, nor mean... But she is incredibly smart, damned gorgeous, and able to think about 5 moves ahead of everyone else.

I don't know what the hell you are attempting to project onto what I was talking about... but.. No

I dunno, I thought "most aggressive" was pretty clear. That's a world of difference from a girl who's merely clever, which is always a welcome addition to a gaming group. What do you think the word "aggressive" means? I don't think you can find a thesaurus that includes it among the synonyms for "smart". Smart is sexy. Aggressive is something I only want to see in bedroom games and contact sports, not interactive storytelling.

If you didn't mean what you said then OK, but just sayin', you're bound to cause misunderstandings if you use words incorrectly.

Shadow Blasko: Smoking GNU: That's cause they distract their opponents with their boobs, like a self-defense mechanisim by some insects who have large "eyes" on their wings.

True, but even as a ... well... breast enthusiast, I can turn that off when need be. I mean, hell... I've spent 22 years working at Renaissance Festivals, and several years dressing up women in corsets and latex fetish outfits...

From a purely asexual (as asexual as one can be when you realize that the sexiest thing on a woman is indeed between her ears, not her arms) standpoint, the hawt ones have the ... wicked factor... that seems to make them excel at competitive gaming.

I've never understood...or been able to Integrate why the surest way to getting laid as a male is to present a "sex is unimportant to me, I'm so Into X hobby." attitude.

There's such a massive amount of passive-aggressive courtship going on in these circles.

The sexual dynamic suggested by the CL ad is definitely the same as hiring a stripper. Or more lIke a domInatrIx or other erotIc performer. Any delusion of some "liberated gender-unbiased" gaming fun, is laughable when you're paying a certain gender to bare flesh.

Not condemning, mind you. I'm no saint.

I don't see it as passive-aggressive or worthy of condemnation so much as trying (and hilariously failing) to satisfy both sides of a double standard at the same time. "We want a chick to DM naked for us, but we're really respectful gentlemen I swear!"

If you're gonna drop the chivalry act, drop it. Nothing wrong with hiring a stripper, but you're either after some action or you aren't.

Mr. digitalrain and I have a house rule. We role a responsiveness stat (4d6, drop the lowest
but you can do it however you want) and if you roll UNDER, you get off. A roll of a 1 is a multiple.

Male characters deduct 1 from their Resp stat each time they get off, so if their Resp stat is
a 12, then after the first orgasm it becomes an 11, etc...

Makes for messy game sex, what with everyone getting off so often, but its easy to keep
track of.

Huh... that is an interesting overarching generalization that fails epically when applied to me.
Robert Patterson is icky and a horrible representation of what "male" is - heck, I'm not sure he's even human.
I prefer Karl Urban, Chris Hemsworth, Clay Matthews, ... more "men" looking men. Viking men. MEN that can grow REAL facial hair, people.
Yes, I know who Clay Matthews is. I won my fantasy football league last year. I have Sunday Ticket.
Etsy and Pinrest are stupid and boring. I don't care that your cupcakes look like little houses. It is a damn cupcake. Eat it.
I hate shopping - I loath it. It is not a sport I enjoy (Yes, other women should just admit for them, it is a sport)
I don't own a purse. I have a briefcase for work that suits just fine. It is black.
Women who have to have multiple purses to match their shoes confuse me to no end. Why waste money that could be spent on Space Marines and Imperial Guard minis?
Shoes - OMG anothersport. I own two pair of heels. Black and brown. They are for work. I hate them. I wear either my tennis shoes or boots when not at work, thank you.
Newcutecellphone? You mean my three year old blackberry that work provides me?

Sorry, but professional women who are over 30 yet still enjoy D&D, RPGs, VideoGames, and miniature war-gaming do exist. I'm one of them.

/Oh, and I own a few cute gamer T-shirts as well. My boyfriend prefers the "control freak" shirt - while I myself love my Battlestar Gallactica shirt best.

Untrue, sir. I know more about the Materia system in FF7, the Cthuhlu DM guide, MTG mythic rares, and kicking ass in Assassins Creed than most men I know.

The nerd girls are all on Pintrest and Etsy obsessing over 35-year-old handbags and want nothing to do with guys who aren't Hipster Robert Pattinson In Glasses With A Guitar And A Book OF Poetry They Wrote. That one girl you knew who actually threw D20's back in college outgrew that awkward phase and joined the OMG Shoes/handbag/Newcutecellphone brigade and will deny that they ever really touched a PHB. The bottom line is women don't obsess over the same things guys do and to the extent guys do.

Huh... that is an interesting overarching generalization that fails epically when applied to me.

Oh, ok, and some are illustrations from comics and fanart. You can tell from the pixels. Sure some guys might have run an unlikely intercept play and caught a nerdgirl during that awkward phase in college, but that is improbable and rare to the point approaching practical impossibility. It's on a par with your 4-year-old wishing to be a helicopter when he grows up; sure, uhm, yeah, could happen, but I think the surgery to implant the turbine and fuel tanks will be costly and painful and WTF?!?!

I don't blame socially repressed and introverted guys for holding out hope for that gorgeous Cosplay Queen with a heart of gold who can see beyond the acne scars and obscene body hair and love them for who they are, but reality has to be accounted for. I mean, if you're just out to squeeze one off to a sexy X-woman in a unitard, that's what the nerdgirl pics are for, but once that photoshoot ended, she met her insanely hot/rich boyfriend for an afternoon of shopping on Rodeo Drive and your chances of wooing her just dropped back to nil.

ltdanman44: at least they are playing the only real version of DnD 3.5

LOL, please say that is a joke.
3.5 is probably the worst edition of D&D (to many power balance issues), and the only one that we have one of the creators of D&D on record as saying he did not like

//would play the 2nd edition Players Options series before playing 3.5

You have a lot of hate. Get help for that. You should see the guys I'm most physically attracted to. I'm not a beauty queen by any means, but I like me a tall skinny nerdy white boy. miss diminutive: I've seen someone link to that one before, so I've had a chance to read it and marvel at the sheer wondrous geekitude. I also remember one thread where people basically wrote how they thought the star wars prequels should have gone. It didn't have massive amounts of comments, but I do remember thinking that a decent number of Farkers stories sounded much better than the actual prequels themselves.

Two Girls One Cup had a better plot than the SW prequels.

digitalrain: CeroX: Parthenogenetic: xanadian: Now, roll a saving throw against jizzing in your pants.

Fortitude, or Will save?

How does the DM set the appropriate DC?

Discuss.

Well, in Shadowrun, Orgasm is a spell, set against target's will, opposed roll...

Mr. digitalrain and I have a house rule.

Makes for messy game sex, what with everyone getting off so often, but its easy to keep
track of.

I guess if i were to actually make a player roll for coming, it would go as such:

Male characters: Agility+Willpower+Modifiers

Female: Body+Charisma+Modifiers

Opposed Extended Test (1 hour)

Male Successes cancel Female Successes, if Female Successes are 0 or negative, she comes. If Male Glitches, premature ejac. otherwise, come at the resolve of the extended test...

I realize there are exceptions and no absolutes. However, there comes a time when a person has to throw up their hands, admit that the needle in the haystack will remain in the haystack for many human lifetimes of searching and move on. It doesn't mean the needle doesn't exist, just that it will not be found within practical constraints of time and effort. It's much easier to move on from a fruitless task if you believe that hope is dead.

I insist I came in third in the WorldWake prerelease tourney because I was wearing a miniskirt and stiletto boots. Distracted my opponents. Also, I rule at pack wars deck building.

I didn't get to go to the pre-release last weekend. Busy getting married. Although, one of my groomsmen wanted to do the midnight flight, but we talked him out of it. We stayed home that night and played our edh decks (slivers ftw!). Good times :-D

Oh congratulations!

Yeah, slivers are mean. I prefer personally to have a million haste black and red goblins that build on each other much like slivers- I had a deck I built that didn't have a creature that was bigger than 3/3, yet I completely ruled with it thanks to mountainwalk.

I have the keys to your heart.

Check with mr kiwi first, but deal.

/you selling? I need more cards for my goblin only red EDH deck.

I am absolutely selling. Are there specific cards you need or is this going to be a long night typing in all my red/black/artifact cards?

My E is in P.

I have a gilded lotus I'm willing to trade... We'll chat.

Fecacacophany, I was gonna call you on that. You're elevated slightly in my esteem for catching it yourself.

I have a case of click-the-button-opposite-of-the-one-you-meant-to-click-itis today. I'm also feeling foul and entirely out of sorts. So, for fear of somehow setting my self on fire within the internets, I'm going back to productive lurking. Have a nice day.

How does the DM set the appropriate DC?

Discuss.

Well, in Shadowrun, Orgasm is a spell, set against target's will, opposed roll...

Mr. digitalrain and I have a house rule.

Makes for messy game sex, what with everyone getting off so often, but its easy to keep
track of.

I guess if i were to actually make a player roll for coming, it would go as such:

Male characters: Agility+Willpower+Modifiers

Female: Body+Charisma+Modifiers

Opposed Extended Test (1 hour)

Male Successes cancel Female Successes, if Female Successes are 0 or negative, she comes. If Male Glitches, premature ejac. otherwise, come at the resolve of the extended test...

You're mixing your RPG platforms :) No Ag or Body in D&D (at least not 2.0 and 3.5).

Why would successes cancel one another out?

sjmcc13: ltdanman44: at least they are playing the only real version of DnD 3.5 LOL, please say that is a joke.
3.5 is probably the worst edition of D&D (to many power balance issues), and the only one that we have one of the creators of D&D on record as saying he did not like

//would play the 2nd edition Players Options series before playing 3.5

The basic 3.x/D20 system is quite serviceable, as testified to by the number of other RPGs that were
based on it. I was actually quite impressed at how much fun D20 MODERN was, in point of fact, even
with the inclusion on old-style level progression.

The problem was that while it was a good framework, it was easily broken by power munchkined
Feats, magic items and prestige classes (WOTC was, of course, one of the prime offenders in this
regard, but other companies were just as guilty), a fault that I've heard has continued in 4E despite
the designers' avowed wishes to put a stop to it.

It plays very well for characters between 5th and 10th level; beyond that it becomes an arms race of
who has the best stat enhancing magical items.

Personally, though, I prefer Chaosium's BRP system.

As the DM of our crew (we play twice a month, sometimes three if we can squeeze it in between work, kids, life, football, etc), I have often found that exposing said girlfriend to the reality of Roleplaying can cure that problem. I've DMed "girlfriend intro to RP games" in D&D, Gurps, Vampire, Werewolf... and in a few cases, the girlfriend became a new member of the gaming crew. In others, when the girlfriend stated, "This is the stupidest thing ever, you gotta grow up and stop doing dumb junk like this" - the guy realized she might not be the soul-mate he was looking for...

Course, if you are doing it as a way to escape the clutches of the girlfriend for the night.... might not be a good idea...

There is nothing quite as awesome as seeing an ex-cheerleader say, "THIS is what you guys were doing? Wow, I should go apologize to the geeks from my high school.. This is FUN!"

That was a straight up Shadowrun 4E ruleset for sex, and a pretty good one too (although I might switch out Charisma for Intuition from what Mrs. Isonomia and other women have told me). Hmmm, considering some of the characters in my current Shadowrun game, I might need to save those rules for later...

The gender gap was more pronounced for us Gen' Xers - the stuff you got exposed to as a kid in the 1990s was different than what we experienced in the 1970s and 1980s. Hell, despite the awesomeness of the Atari and NES, even gaming consoles/PCs weren't ubiquitous.

I'm looking forward to a new Star Wars game me and a friend are setting up to start soon. I had a great idea for a knight errant jedi. I'd be happy to. The conversation would go like this:

Girl, you knew what his hobbies were when you got together with him. If he don't get his space to be himself, you'll be smothering the life out of him. You don't see him telling you to shelve your thousand purses or collection of Nicholas Sparks books, so let him go nerd it out with the boys once in a while. If you're not into it that's fine, but let him have his hobbies, mmmkay? By the way, add pesto to his turkey sandwiches. Trust me, it's amazing.

Glaze over from the math/stats/mechanics? Or the general idea itself?

The first is fixable - the second? Ah, not so much... This is where a girl DM comes in handy! Girls, as a generalization, don't play as much for the math/mechanics. Women gamers (in my experience), tend to be much more story-driven players. So when you explain games in numbers/math/rolling/stats most girls (and some boys) will just tune out. If you explain it as, "See, it is like a choose your own adventure book. The DM tells the story - we roll the dice to see what page we go to next. And stats are basically ways to modify which page I go to. Since I'm weak, I'm not gonna get the "bashes the door down" page that often."

I think that is why I enjoyed 4th ed D&D so much *Ducks - please don't hurt me* The mechanics were easier to learn for a total new player and a lot more forgiving. Nothing like teaching a someone to play in less than thirty minutes - then half way into the game have her whisper something in another player's ear. He grins and says, "YES! YES DO THAT! Kipple is gonna HATE YOU! AWESOME."

/yes, I did hate her for that...
//she had a total blast. So did the mobs she blasted half-way across the board *sigh*

Mine are what I call "poisoned apple" color. They're red marbled with green, with gold lettering.

They served me well in my most recent D2 character build- half elf bard with a knife-throwing specialty. We start Monday. I haz an excite.

I just started a campaign with friends in Pathfinder. Im playing an Elven Ranger with a hatred for gnolls. I had a blast as I haven't gotten to game for a long time because of my gf.

That's a shame. You should be able to go game once a week at least without your girl giving you grief.

Mr Kiwi is our DM. I'm the half elf bard on a mission to kill my elven father, there's a young paladin, a human cleric, and a human lightning wizard who spazzes out like Tweak from South Park. It's a fun mix.

I agree with you completly. Would you talk some sense into her? Or at least distract her so I can hit her with a board? LOL, just kidding.

I'm looking forward to a new Star Wars game me and a friend are setting up to start soon. I had a great idea for a knight errant jedi. It will be a split class scoundrel and jedi guardian with the intent of running around with little input from the jedi council and being a bit of a jack of all trades. It just sounded kinda fun and the GM really liked the concept.

DjangoStonereaver: The basic 3.x/D20 system is quite serviceable, as testified to by the number of other RPGs that were
based on it.

I think that has more to do with "here is a system for free = no R&D time for us" meaning that every 2 bit publisher could skip the hard parts of development. Designing a system is hard, taking one released for free is cheap and easy.
The better games that have come out since 3.X are all ones that used their own system, not d20 clones.

DjangoStonereaver: The problem was that while it was a good framework, it was easily broken by power munchkined
Feats, magic items and prestige classes (WOTC was, of course, one of the prime offenders in this
regard, but other companies were just as guilty), a fault that I've heard has continued in 4E despite
the designers' avowed wishes to put a stop to it.

That is true for pretty much ever RPG, but 3.X is one of the worst out there for it. There are always unbalanced/optimal choices, all that a designer can do is minamize the effects of the unbalance (which 4e does quite well).
4E has the some of the same problems, but not out of the box (3.X was broken in with just the PHB, DMG and MM), it took a while for anything truely broken and unbalancing to appear below level 21 (21 to 30 was meant to be full of "broken" combos), and the extent of the brokeness is no where near as unbalancing as in 3.X (an optomized PC in an unoptimized party could not take down an encounter on his own).
The other end of the brokeness problem is making unplayable/useless characters, in 3.X this is too easy to do if you did not know the system, in 4E you have to work to make a useless character unless you are in a "characters are optimized or useless" group.

Yeah, she doesn't get it. I was making a character for a Star Wars game the other night and she was asking questions and when I would attempt to explain I could just see her eyes glaze over. But I find I don't get to do a lot of the things I would like to do. Its kinda sad really.

AWESOME."

No. This evening I did, however, get to play the module "Blood Sacrifice of the Moon Maid" upon the terrycloth-draped Alter of the Pillow. She had to be stabbed repeatedly, and it was gorier than the slaying of an orc. My character come out on top, though I ended up loosing loot. Go figure.

I'm sorry, my old group tried Rolemaster and the more streamlined MERP several times and I always felt the complexity just bogged it down. Of course we were at least able to do a combat with it, try as I might I could never get the rules for some games to work correctly.

If players run roughshod over a game due to "broken rules" then the DM/GM isn't doing his or her job. I've seen people claim their Codzilla or hyper-optimized wizards are unstoppable and then watched a clever opponent tear them apart like tissue without someone resorting to the "because the DM said so" excuse. Experienced and patient DM/GMs know how to roll with the punches.

I played a bit of 4E but it wasn't my favorite system. I felt that instead of one Vancian class: Mage; you had all Vancian classes. All games turned out very similar with us saving our Encounter and Daily powers waiting for the big fight. I've played every edition and if I had to rate them I'd go with 2nd Edition being the best, then AD&D, 3rd, then 4th. Of course I'm dying to play Pathfinder now. If I can only find a group.

I prefer 4ed as well, the mechanics and fighting rules were simplified and a level 1 wizard didn't have to worry about running out of spells. Also Half-Elves stopped sucking yay!

4ed had it's issues, especially right at the beginning, but it pretty good overall. 3.5 had a lot of "you must have the perfect build" and munchkinism.

I played a bit of 4E ...

Tis one of the interesting discussions that I've been having with friends over the ideas behind D&D Next.

Balance of classes is a very interesting problem throughout D&D that I thought was repaired a great deal in 4th ed. As stated by shortymac, 3rd ed was often over at character creation. You either built the right mage, made sure your fighter had the right anti-magic items, or you created a bard and everyone laughed at you for being a moron. The "perfect build" didn't happen to 4th ed for quite some time - and it was a lot rarer in 4th to have the "useless bard" class...

But the very thing that they got right in 4th ed, is what ticked so many old-school players off more than anything. They HATED the fact that vancian was gone (which, as you rightly say... no, it isn't - EVERYONE has it now, and it has been tweaked to where nobody ever runs out of "spells") and save-or-die spells were removed (which, frankly was necessary for balance if less than half the classes can get those abilities). So - Balance, was oddly enough, what many people hated about it.

As a DM? I loved the balance. I didn't have to worry about *PlayerMooklepticon* as I like to call our special character-creating-Mook specialist, making that darn character that I can't kill, can't hurt, can't do anything to affect and he waltzes through the encounter bored while all the other characters are at the beginning of the dungeon bleeding from every orifice and crying at the horror of the encounter. Mooklepticon is known for such antics as: the Paladin who said, "no affect" to just about every ray of a prismatic spray and the wizard that polymorphed the dragon into a squirrel.. in mid flight.... squirrel fall down go splat.

It's funny - after high school, I think every gaming group I've been in has had at least one female player, and generally speaking, they've been excellent RPers - and generally more cutthroat than any of the male players. And almost of all of them have been, ahem, generously endowed in the chest region.

Which is great, for the het members of my gaming group. :P

2012-10-03 12:10:32 PM

sjmcc13: The other end of the brokeness problem is making unplayable/useless characters, in 3.X this is too easy to do if you did not know the system, in 4E you have to work to make a useless character unless you are in a "characters are optimized or useless" group.

Opinions differ, and I'll call this one valid, but it's not my game.

Some gamers hate that utility skills/magic cost you precious character creation resources in pre-4th Ed D&D. I see the point, but I like the sort of drama that can only originate from a difficult choice. D&D4 deliberately set up a firewall between combat-relevant and utility skills, especially magic. This is either hailed as a long-overdue revelation or detested as a decision that destroyed the game.

It makes the game more functional, I'll admit. However, balance is not a goal to be pursued at all costs in an RPG. Imbalance isn't desirable, but it's an occupational hazard in a game that gives players a certain degree of real freedom, which by necessity includes the freedom to break the game or fark themselves over. Just because your car's speedometer goes up to 140mph doesn't mean it's smart to drive that fast; grown-ups know when and when not to. When the game does the work for you, every bit of substance is like whatever frosting you slather on the cake someone else baked. It might be good, but making cosmetic fixes to something that'll never be uniquely your creation limits the enjoyment you can get out of it.

The vast majority of those super-mega builds require one or two things to always be true, like magic being available or whatnot. If that single point of failure disappears then they be f'ed - don't over use that, but use it enough and those players will learn to be less... what's the word... domineering?

Nobody is saying that.

When I suggested it last month and volunteered to DM, all i got was snark. My own D&D group generally plays over Skype, has a lot of fun, and in general has cool people and good roleplayers (and one furry) in it.

If you're actually interested in getting a game going, I've got a few ideas, and I would love to talk to potential players and see what sort of game they want, or what sort of character they'd like to explore. I've actually been writing down ideas for a "misfits" campaign where the players are all of various unusual classes or races, and I already have a player interested in being an animated scarecrow who traveled around the world out of sheer curiosity, and is now a Bard.

Given a choice, I would probably run 3.5e, but 4e is also a possibility. I've played in Pathfinder games, but have no rulebooks for it, so I can't really GM it.

They match my army(crimson and bone white), which is neat, but they don't treat it, or me, particularly well on the table. They're Space Marines, I'm not supposed to fail 3 of 5 armor saves on a regular basis or overheat every time I fire plasma weapons...

As to the two vague topics of the thread, gaming and geeky women...obviously I'm into all the geeky stuff, though I've never actually played a proper RPG. I had a brief brush with Fantasy Flight's WH40k Dark Heresy, but our GM had never GM'd before, and no one really got into the roleplaying aspects of it. With a much better grasp of the lore now I'd like to give it a serious shot if I could actually find a game. There was that one day where a group was in the gaming store playing while I got my ass handed to me by Tyranids, wonder if they're still together and looking for players.

As for geeky women, the only ones I know around here have all been in steady relationships for years now. Finding single ones isn't easy...

I count at least half a dozen posts intoning how they want to play again but have no group

Pathfinder has everything online, don't have the link here at work, but it's all there. Very similar to 3.5 so it wouldn't be a huge adjustment.

I've only ever DMed 4E, but wouldn't be opposed to running Pathfinder. Your game sounds quite interesting though, less min-maxing than usual, more RP. Put me down as interested, depending on what time the game would be.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/

I've been in a 4E game, and while it wasn't horrible, I have to admit that it felt like a tabletop MMO.

I've personally really liked Pathfinder. I'm running one game currently and am playing in two others. I do agree that CRs in Pathfinder are really, um... unusable. But I'm used to adjusting encounter son the fly anyway.

Solon Isonomia: digitalrain: CeroX: digitalrain: CeroX: Parthenogenetic: xanadian: Now, roll a saving throw against jizzing in your pants.

Fortitude, or Will save?

How does the DM set the appropriate DC?

Discuss.

Well, in Shadowrun, Orgasm is a spell, set against target's will, opposed roll...

Mr. digitalrain and I have a house rule.

Makes for messy game sex, what with everyone getting off so often, but its easy to keep

That was a straight up Shadowrun 4E ruleset for sex, and a pretty good one too (although I might switch out Charisma for Intuition from what Mrs. Isonomia and other women have told me). Hmmm, considering some of the characters in my current Shadowrun game, I might need to save those rules for later...

Aaaaaah gotcha. My mistake. I've never played SR. D&D, Rolemaster, BESM, Aces & Eights, and many
others, but not SR.

If someone wants to DM it, I'm down. But all I have are the 4E Core rules, or every GURPS module. Which I can probably share. I'm not sure how large the PDF's are. I even have a Warhammer fan-made GURPS conversion.

Good for a 4e or GURPS campaign.

Hubby wanted to do a Warehouse 13 like GURPS campaign, thought about setting it up during WW2 and use the Nazis relic hunters as a big bad.

EIP, count me in.

Warehouse 23 for GURPS well predated Warehouse 13, but I can't remember how close the ideas were.

I would never want to try to DM a Rolemaster game, but I can handle Spell Law and my own meager

Fancy dice thread? Don't have access to a better picture as I'm at work, but you can kinda see them, hidden in behind the minis by the book.

Sorry. I'm (supposed to be) working, so i can't post too often today.

And yeah, my thoughts on 4e were the same. Giving fighters daily powers and turning their skills into basically non-magic spells is great for getting new players into the hobby, especially those coming from MMOs, but it isn't the same as it used to be. Traditionally the brutish types (barbarians, fighters, etc) were only good at one thing. Granted, it makes that type of character much more open to people who didn't enjoy the older style of barbarian or fighter, but still, it felt gimicky compared to my usual barbarians.

Daily powers done the way 4e did also encouraged having one encounter, then camping, then having another. How long is a day? When can you extended rest while in a dungeon? What we ultimately did in my first 4e group was to change daily powers to" burn an AP to use this power" powers. It made the daily power use a bit more common, and at the same time, made Action Points require a bit more thought for their use.

What it reminds me of, again using MMOs as a reference, is the long-cooldown clickie powers. I used to hate when someone had a power that would save the day, but didn't ever use it because of the lengthy cooldown.

Solon Isonomia: pkellmey: Women play fantasy football?

Probably for the same reasons why I know more about fashion than most straight men - you pick up some of spouse's habits/knowledge.

For me? I was an only child. So, since my dad didn't have a son? Yet he did have a very tomboy daughter? Yep, Sunday football was a common thing with me and dad. We also played baseball and catch. When I got to be a teen, we rode horses together. We were one of the only Father/Daughter team roping crews in my area.

Some girls enjoy "boy" things. Some boys enjoy "girl" things. Or, perhaps better put - people like different things.

And I'll have you know my fantasy football team is a thing of wonder. PPR Keeper league with Calvin Johnson and Ray Rice. *sigh* Now if I could just get a reliable second RB..... Darn you concussions....

IronJelly: Sorry.

I understand the (supposed to be) working thing. Doing it myself, we're being audited by the parent company today though, so the boss is keeping lab work to a minimum so they'll have less to scrutinize.

If you do a 4E game the way you set up earlier in the thread, I'd be amused to try a kobold fighter

DarkLancelot: shortymac: Girion47: Klivian: gutter_ca/fl: Nerdy BIE thread?

/EIP

A promising idea, but unlikely.

Seems like more people are sucking around trying to say "Hey, let's start a fark d&d campaign over skype using maptools!" but no one wants to be the first

I didn't know that... hubby came up with the idea after the first season of Warehouse.

We only bought the 2 main rulebooks and nothing else. I did create a cool character though, think librarian CIA agent.

rolls like a farking GOD.

It's not even that I roll bad, the dice flat out mess with me. Case in point from this past weekend...

My veterans have dropped from orbit into the middle of the field against a force of Chaos Marines, their drop pod boxing the enemy's Land Raider into terrain so if he wants to move he'll have to risk immobilizing himself plowing through the ruins on his flanks, just as planned. There's a squad of traitor marines in shooting range, right in the open, the perfect target. They choose to fire Vengeance rounds, which will ignore the enemy's armor, but have a chance to overheat on a 1 on a d6 to hit, which would force an armor save. Ten shots, nine hits, no overheats. Almost an absolutely perfect to hit roll. It's now 4 or better on a d6 on each to wound with no saves, they're going to gut the traitor marine squad...

Eight 1s and 2s. One single wound. Such is my life in the grim darkness of the far future, the dice gods are cruel.

*Cringe* Sometimes the dice just hate.

My worst during 40k was at a tourney in Atlanta right before 4thed went live. Not only do my DarkAngels (at the time, stand and shoot) have to go against SpacePuppies(CHARGEHANDTOHANDRAWR!) played by a friend of mine that often beats me with that particular list - the mission we pull? I have to CHARGE him, retrieve the emissary and return the emissary to a safe zone. Right. Ohkay. This is gonna be bad.

First round - I go first. I move my only troop transport up, which has my captain with the Sword of Secrets within. He and his buddies are the only hand-to-hand I have in my entire army. I fire my lascannons, artillery and such. I couldn't hit water if I fell out of a boat. A boat with water in it... *sigh* His turn, he fires his ONLY lascannon. It crits the transport, and kills everyone inside as they all fail their saves. *sigh* Wow. Okay, this can't much worse as I watch his entire army move close enough to sneeze on me.

Second round - I fire my lascannons and then the my lone artillery ... which deviates the maximum possible distance. RIGHT on top of the emissary's head. Like EXACTLY on top of the model. And it only hits him. Not a single of the three groups he has surrounding it. Wow.... At this point I begin to cackle and just screamed out, "TO OUR DEATH'S MY BROTHERS!" And I charged his entire army while we both laughed like lunatics.

I had no models on the table by the end of round three. Total bloodbath. However I did win, "Best Warcry" for that particular little fiasco.

I think they may have toned down damage done to guys inside vehicles, I know the pains of that happening pretty well. I'm not sure what's worse, my tactical squads failing their Ld9 pinning tests when they'd otherwise not mind having disembarked, being stuck getting them slaughtered, or losing 2 of 6 terminators when my Land Raider gets popped on a lucky shot because I can't even make average or better 2+ armor saves, let alone 3+s...Oh, losing two terminators on 3 armor saveable wounds when in close combat with a unit I should wipe the floor with is pretty rough too, but not really vehicle related. Just demonstrates my luck with armor saves.

Oh, that's easy. Click the little button that has a chain with an arrow pointing to the upper right corner. You'll get something that looks like this:

a target="_blank" href="http://">Link

where you see the href="http://" - that's where you'll want to put whatever url you want to link to.

then you change the word "Link" to whatever you want.

I long ago stopped questioning his weird Catholic Dice issues. If it brings him dice luck, we just shrug and let him go on.  Can't be any weirder than my tendency to put dice that do bad down the front of my bra to "bring them back to sanity." My friends try to tell me that I'm teaching them bad habits. That if bad rolls get boobies, they aren't gonna be rolling anything but ones... but, I know better! Klivian: shortymac: Okay who is the organizer of the FARK Skype RPG group? Hell I will even play pathfinder/3.5.

I've been craving an RPG game for a while now. EIP

IronJelly seems to have vanished, so I'll take the position as DM (unless they come back).

It will be Pathfinder, Core Rulebook only (APG is a maybe for now). EIP for players interested.

Requirements: Skype with mic, maptools latest version (it's free, runs on java). Rough guess at time would be Thursdays at 7pm eastern.

Damn, that sounds fun. The Core and APG books are the only ones I have for Pathfinder. Sadly, I'm at work at that time. 6pm-2am...

HalEmmerich: digitalrain: You sound like my husband. When we game, he has this constant vortex of suck around him
that makes it impossible for him to roll well - UNLESS he is rolling for our opponents, then he
rolls like a farking GOD.

Could be worse, you could have fumbled on the Rolemaster fumble table and blown off your own face

I went from delighted "OMG, GIMME!" to sad-Panda...

WAAAAAY late to the party....

Started off with AD&D but never took to it. Many have told me "You didn't have the right DM". Sorta like meat loaf and fruit cake, I guess.
Played my way through several games mentioned here, plus whatever grabbed someone's interest at the time (Used to play with a VERY experimental group. If you haven't played it, avoid "Incursion" at all costs!).

Stuck mainly to Earth Dawn and Dark Conspiracy (More Gates of Hell and less zOMFG!! ALIENS!!)
Sadly, I've been without a group for years now.
Lived in Florida for awhile and hooked up with a group through a local gaming shop. They were...odd. MOst of the games revolved around bedding some Sex Goddess and magic items included things like a +5 Dildo of Cumming (I'm not making this up). Nice guys, though one had a rather unhealthy fetish for Anime or Mange or whatever it is that's all tentacle-rapey and school girls.
As for girl gamers, I've played with a few, though each of them was only there to appease their husband/boyfriend. One sat there, drinking coffee and smoking until someone told her to roll. Another needed ALL THE ATTENTIONS!! ALL THE TIME!! and demanded that we watch her perform every gesture or nuance required to cast a spell or she'd get all pouty and biatchy until we ended the game for the night. The last was mainly there for attention. She'd arrive in something skin tight and revealing and writhe and pose atop or next to her boyfriend, both of them just KNOWING that the rest of us just HAD to have her!!

As usual, I'm way late to the thread. A couple of things:

No Bloodninja references? I am disappoint. "I put on my robe and wizards hat..."

Haven't gamed since the 70s, Chainmail and then into D&D and AD&D. Kept getting stuck as GM, rarely got to play. Kind of burned out as a result of that, and because each subsequent editions kept defining more and more detail. I like the older, looser versions, because you could improvise more while GM'ing and while playing. Not everything came down to looking up a d20 roll vs. one of 37 tables. Still have all my old books, which I pull out every so often and stroke longingly, whispering "my precious ..."

/my lawn, get off it
//nah, not really ... c'mon in and have a drink.

I always feel like my opponents who field terminators can make their 2+ armor saves all day. Hell, I had a game this past weekend where I poured fire from 15 marines and my thunderfire cannon into a squad of grey knights terminators for 2-3 turns and only killed 3 of the 5.

Like I said in here earlier, I very briefly played Dark Heresy. It was mine, and a couple other people's, first pen and paper game, and the first time our GM had ever GM'd, so all in all it was a bit of a mess. No one really got into the roleplay, and we didn't even make use of many of the game mechanics. Stuff like glossing over the time investment for investigations, giving everyone the dodge ability to easy combat, that sort of stuff. It'd be nice, now that I have a more firm grasp of 40k lore myself, to play it again with a more experienced GM, where my taking Friend: Adeptes Arbites would actually grant the party some kind of benefit when we worked with them and people actually played their characters rather than a genre savvy version of themself. Maybe start up a skype game like everyone else in here is doing for DnD? Heh.

We did have some good times though, like when our psyker failed so spectacularly on his first power usage, in our first encounter, that he ended up becoming a daemonhost of Nurgle and wiping everyone, and most of the planet, out. Rather than immediately start over we just gave him 5 insanity points and chalked it up to a hallucination.

digitalrain: CeroX: digitalrain: CeroX: Parthenogenetic: xanadian: Now, roll a saving throw against jizzing in your pants.

Fortitude, or Will save?

How does the DM set the appropriate DC?

Discuss.

Well, in Shadowrun, Orgasm is a spell, set against target's will, opposed roll...

Mr. digitalrain and I have a house rule.

Makes for messy game sex, what with everyone getting off so often, but its easy to keep

Sorry, for some reason this page crashes on me at work, so i couldn't respond, and i had shiat to do wheni got home...

For clarity, if you know SR4 rules, in opposed test, the successes (5-6 on a d6) cancel each other out... whoever has successes when the tally is done, wins that round. In a quick instance, only one roll is made, if something must be done over an extended period of time, say, hacking, then you roll your dice pool, count the successes then scoop the dice pool up, take a die out of the pool and roll again, you continue this until you either give up, glitch (fumble) or run out of dice.

There is usually a lower DC for an on the fly type of test, so for example, if one were to say, hack on the fly, the DC is lower, and you only have to roll once to break in the system, but you have to roll a matrix stealth to not be noticed, if the opposed test wins, then you were noticed in the system either by the system itself, or a counter hacker, or whatever, and you have to roll a stealth for every action you do in the system while hacking on the fly

Doing an extended hacking test would be a much higher DC (think in the 20s), and once you are in the system, you do not need to roll a stealth because the reason your hack took longer was because you finessed the system into letting you in...

In this scenario, they would cancel each other out because the male character is trying to perform an agility test against the female's body and looks... the lower the looks, the longer he will last (presumably)

CeroX: digitalrain: CeroX: digitalrain: CeroX: Parthenogenetic: xanadian: Now, roll a saving throw against jizzing in your pants.

Fortitude, or Will save?

How does the DM set the appropriate DC?

Discuss.

Well, in Shadowrun, Orgasm is a spell, set against target's will, opposed roll...

Mr. digitalrain and I have a house rule.

Makes for messy game sex, what with everyone getting off so often, but its easy to keep
track of.

I guess if i were to actually make a player roll for coming, it would go as such:

Male characters: Agility+Willpower+Modifiers

Female: Body+Charisma+Modifiers

Opposed Extended Test (1 hour)

Male Successes cancel Female Successes, if Female Successes are 0 or negative, she comes. If Male Glitches, premature ejac. otherwise, come at the resolve of the extended test...

Remind me to take that spell. I just wish all the characters would be much less whoreish. But nothing says distraction like a room full of people falling to the ground in extacy...

Very cool. Where did you get them?

They're a limited time version of these(which are also limited, go figure) that came with one of the special packages for the 40k 6th edition rulebook this summer. The normal ones are black/grey, it's completely by chance that the ones that came with the set were red to match my army paint scheme.

Most of the gamer chicks I know are pretty curvy. Yes, some are more rounded than others, but quite a few have that much sought after hourglass figure...

There are quite a few out at the Ren Faire that I work at. LOL we work all day then play Magic the gathering, Munchkin, or role play. Two weekends ago I was playing Shadowrun.

btw this is men lol:

Sounds like a lot of fun to work there. Sadly, our local Ren Faire has closed down...

The Maine Ren Faire. Used to be held in the Lebanon/Sanford area. I could drive down to the King Richard's, but that's a bit of a haul. There's a small on in Kingston, NH that started a few years ago. Small, but pretty good. A friend of mine has worked there as a juggler.

I have heard of King Richards. But I didn't know there was one in Maine. I know a few Road Rennies I will have to ask them what it was like.

It wasn't huge, but they had a permanent site. Closed down a few years ago, though.

This text is now purple: dragonchild: meanmutton: Women who could, mind you, correctly identify the difference between a pistol and shotgun formation.

That's a litmus test for a woman who claims she's into football. That's about it, though.

A real woman knows how the quarterback position got its name, and whether under-center or shotgun is the older formation.

Under-center is older, right? Don't know how the QB got its name though.

Cool read, I only did D&D and AD&D in the 80's, but I still have all my books, lost the modules, restocked them from ebay...

Thanks for the instructions on submitting a URL. My links always got chopped up.

God-is-a-Taco: Boobies tag automatically bars pictures from being posted in the thread, I believe.

Well, that's rather counter-productive. Never mind then.

You know whats worse? Being a good looking, self-hating nerd. All the women are into you but they're too intimidated to say anything and you're too much of a farking pussy to utter a word.

C'mon ladies, it's 2012 its about time you started asking us out...lol

Oy, this. Seen it way too many times, and it's always depressing to watch.

One time at a party a bunch of us were talking about this one guy who was interested in this girl who was basically flirting with him in every way short of jumping on him and raping him right there. He wouldn't get the farking hint. He wasn't playing hard to get; he was literally oblivious to the possibility that a girl could be interested in him. It's amazing how low self-esteem can become such a huge mental block. It was downright depressing to watch because I'd been there myself; I knew the entire crowd could be screaming at him to just have sex with her already and he'd only convince himself everyone's playing a huge prank on him.

I feel like this has probably happened to me before, but not for a while, as I can't remember any recent social situations where all the women weren't already in relationships... I need to get out more, or something.
