I think that is why I enjoyed 4th ed D&D so much *Ducks - please don't hurt me* The mechanics were easier to learn for a total new player and a lot more forgiving. Nothing like teaching a someone to play in less than thirty minutes - then half way into the game have her whisper something in another player's ear. He grins and says, "YES! YES DO THAT! Kipple is gonna HATE YOU! AWESOME."

/yes, I did hate her for that...
//she had a total blast. So did the mobs she blasted half-way across the board *sigh*

I prefer 4ed as well, the mechanics and fighting rules were simplified and a level 1 wizard didn't have to worry about running out of spells. Also Half-Elves stopped sucking yay!

4ed had it's issues, especially right at the beginning, but it pretty good overall. 3.5 had a lot of "you must have the perfect build" and munchkinism.

I played a bit of 4E ...

Tis one of the interesting discussions that I've been having with friends over the ideas behind D&D Next.

Balance of classes is a very interesting problem throughout D&D that I thought was repaired a great deal in 4th ed. As stated by shortymac, 3rd ed was often over at character creation. You either built the right mage, made sure your fighter had the right anti-magic items, or you created a bard and everyone laughed at you for being a moron. The "perfect build" didn't happen to 4th ed for quite some time - and it was a lot rarer in 4th to have the "useless bard" class...

But the very thing that they got right in 4th ed, is what ticked so many old-school players off more than anything. They HATED the fact that vancian was gone (which, as you rightly say... no, it isn't - EVERYONE has it now, and it has been tweaked to where nobody ever runs out of "spells") and save-or-die spells were removed (which, frankly was necessary for balance if less than half the classes can get those abilities). So - Balance, was oddly enough, what many people hated about it.

As a DM? I loved the balance. I didn't have to worry about *PlayerMooklepticon* as I like to call our special character-creating-Mook specialist, making that darn character that I can't kill, can't hurt, can't do anything to affect and he waltzes through the encounter bored while all the other characters are at the beginning of the dungeon bleeding from every orifice and crying at the horror of the encounter. Mooklepticon is known for such antics as: the Paladin who said, "no affect" to just about every ray of a prismatic spray and the wizard that polymorphed the dragon into a squirrel.. in mid flight.... squirrel fall down go splat.

It's funny - after high school, I think every gaming group I've been in has had at least one female player, and generally speaking, they've been excellent RPers - and generally more cutthroat than any of the male players. And almost of all of them have been, ahem, generously endowed in the chest region.

Which is great, for the het members of my gaming group. :P

2012-10-03 12:10:32 PM

sjmcc13: The other end of the brokeness problem is making unplayable/useless characters, in 3.X this is too easy to do if you did not know the system, in 4E you have to work to make a useless character unless you are in a "characters are optimized or useless" group.

Opinions differ, and I'll call this one valid, but it's not my game.

Some gamers hate that utility skills/magic cost you precious character creation resources in pre-4th Ed D&D. I see the point, but I like the sort of drama that can only originate from a difficult choice. D&D4 deliberately set up a firewall between combat-relevant and utility skills, especially magic. This is either hailed as a long-overdue revelation or detested as a decision that destroyed the game.

It makes the game more functional, I'll admit. However, balance is not a goal to be pursued at all costs in an RPG. Imbalance isn't desirable, but it's an occupational hazard in a game that gives players a certain degree of real freedom, which by necessity includes the freedom to break the game or fark themselves over. Just because your car's speedometer goes up to 140mph doesn't mean it's smart to drive that fast; grown-ups know when and when not to. When the game does the work for you, every bit of substance is like whatever frosting you slather on the cake someone else baked. It might be good, but making cosmetic fixes to something that'll never be uniquely your creation limits the enjoyment you can get out of it.

The vast majority of those super-mega builds require one or two things to always be true, like magic being available or whatnot. If that single point of failure disappears then they be f'ed - don't over use that, but use it enough and those players will learn to be less... what's the word... domineering?

Nobody is saying that.

When I suggested it last month and volunteered to DM, all i got was snark. My own D&D group generally plays over Skype, has a lot of fun, and in general has cool people and good roleplayers (and one furry) in it.

If you're actually interested in getting a game going, I've got a few ideas, and I would love to talk to potential players and see what sort of game they want, or what sort of character they'd like to explore. I've actually been writing down ideas for a "misfits" campaign where the players are all of various unusual classes or races, and I already have a player interested in being an animated scarecrow who traveled around the world out of sheer curiosity, and is now a Bard.

Given a choice, I would probably run 3.5e, but 4e is also a possibility. I've played in Pathfinder games, but have no rulebooks for it, so I can't really GM it.

They match my army(crimson and bone white), which is neat, but they don't treat it, or me, particularly well on the table. They're Space Marines, I'm not supposed to fail 3 of 5 armor saves on a regular basis or overheat every time I fire plasma weapons...

img.photobucket.com

As to the two vague topics of the thread, gaming and geeky women...obviously I'm into all the geeky stuff, though I've never actually played a proper RPG. I had a brief brush with Fantasy Flight's WH40k Dark Heresy, but our GM had never GM'd before, and no one really got into the roleplaying aspects of it. With a much better grasp of the lore now I'd like to give it a serious shot if I could actually find a game. There was that one day where a group was in the gaming store playing while I got my ass handed to me by Tyranids, wonder if they're still together and looking for players.

As for geeky women, the only ones I know around here have all been in steady relationships for years now. Finding single ones isn't easy...

IronJelly: Klivian:
Seems like more people are sucking around trying to say "Hey, let's start a fark d&d campaign over skype using maptools!" but no one wants to be the first

I count at least half a dozen posts intoning how they want to play again but have no group

Pathfinder has everything online, don't have the link here at work, but it's all there. Very similar to 3.5 so it wouldn't be a huge adjustment.

I've only ever DMed 4E, but wouldn't be opposed to running Pathfinder. Your game sounds quite interesting though, less min-maxing than usual, more RP. Put me down as interested, depending on what time the game would be.

"Ok Lolita... I mean Galstaff, you're standing alone in the dark."
"I cast a spell!"
"Where are the cheetos??"
"Right next to you, Starr-light!."
"I want to cast magic missile!"

You know, I had that idea once.

Nerd bachelor parties.

I coulda made some GOOD money.

Some 21 year old WOW nerd wants a hot chick in a French maid outfit to join their LAN party? To play Super Smash Brothers and wipe the floor with them with Ness while only wearing a g string? To strip off a Princess Zelda outfit and end up wearing only Hylian shield pasties and a smile?

There's a market for it.

We really should team up and start a joint nerd bachelor party and porn business.

Sure, you got the financial backing? I sure as hell don't. Medicare doesn't pay THAT great.

And I Might Be Crazy But...

That's your problem. You gotta be able to do it drunk too. It's half the fun. :) drunk I'm much better as Captain Falcon.

I live in Canada so no worries there, I was thinking about doing a joint venture with a burlesque group in Toronto who does nerdy themed shows.

I did go to B-school with a guy who worked in the porn industry as a businessman. Hmmmm maybe I should give him a ring.

Well unfortunately I'm in Indiana. Not sure how we could make that work out. Nice idea though.

Here's what you do if you're all drinking and someone plays Captain Falcon. They have to play with his pink costume. Now when you aerial knee someone off the edge, it looks like he hitting them with... well, it's not his leg, let's just say that.

This weekend I'm doing a Twilight 2000 (actually 2020 ;) ) campaign with zombies and the Mexican army trying to take over the Wal-Mart central warehouse facility north of Sparks.

Oh, how I miss my deuce and a half carrying enough ammunition and MREs to supply a company...

sjmcc13: ltdanman44: at least they are playing the only real version of DnD 3.5 LOL, please say that is a joke.
3.5 is probably the worst edition of D&D (to many power balance issues), and the only one that we have one of the creators of D&D on record as saying he did not like

//would play the 2nd edition Players Options series before playing 3.5

I'll take that argument.

/4.0 is an abomination

SAVE vs SEXUAL ASSUALT CHARGES. Make the saving throw and suffer 1/2 term incarceration.

Tell me you can play Melee instead, and you would've been a big hit in my college days.

Not that big a hit, though. Some of us are sorta prudes.

Of course Melee. Don't be silly. I mastered Ness's recovery move.

And SuperChuck- HAAAHAHAHA!!! I love it! I wish. If I had the money for a start up business, I'd do it. That, and mobile bartending.

I wanna hear more about the purple g-string. Use plenty of visual aids, please?

Okay who is the organizer of the FARK Skype RPG group? Hell I will even play pathfinder/3.5.

I've been craving an RPG game for a while now. EIP

Jesus, and I thought my bachelor "party" was lame! (We had a weekend in New Orleans planned - one of the groomsmen had a house in the garden district - and then Katrina came by and washed the city away - wasn't much fun after that)

Really? You were already favorited by me, but consider yourself double favorited.

Perhaps I should start a Fark D&D Skype group thingie. It's an excuse to get drunk and talk about elves to strangers.
