I think Torchlight II needs to be a LOT farther up on that list! And Banner Saga? Dang, that came out of nowhere.

I will be streaming Xcom - Enemy Unknown from the moment the game releases next week, possibly straight through, until I beat it on Classic/Ironman.

I'll setup a link and post to fark soon if anyone is interested.

X-COM: Enemy Unknown is one of the only games I've ever pre-ordered so I really hope it lives up to my expectations. Never heard of the Banner Saga, but I'll be keeping an eye out for it now.

I've been hopelessly addicted to Faster Than Light since it came out.

Mech games are back?

I really hate the fact that there were almost no new intellectual properties on that list. Maybe 1? 2? A solid 90% sequels.

Way too many sequels. People know of those franchises, highlight games that deserve to be mentioned.

2012-10-03 01:57:37 AM
That might be the worst farking slideshow interface ever. I spend 20 seconds looking around for the link to proceed to the slideshow (which is how it usually works) or the hoverover navigation buttons on the picture itself (which is also how it usually works) only to finally spot the micro forward and back buttons on the left side..

China White Tea: I really hate the fact that there were almost no new intellectual properties on that list. Maybe 1? 2? A solid 90% sequels.

There's nothing with wrong with building upon established game systems in order to make them more complex and interesting, which is what sequels ideally do. I don't think anybody is upset that Planetary Annihilation claims to be a spiritual successor to Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander, I don't think anybody is upset that Dishonored builds upon Thief. The problem is whether or not the price tag of the sequel justifies the cost of investment on the developer end, and these days, the highest-profile releases often have larger marketing budgets than development costs. That's the real issue.

Hey now, some of us are having fun with that. I mean, I'm still gonna quit in a month or two when I finish the new story stuff, but it's pretty and I like the lore so far. Despite having no previous give-a-shiat about the pandas in the first place.

Torchlight 2 is ballin' yo. Kicks the shiat out of Diablo 3. I have a friend who's still into Diablo 3 - I'm hoping I can get him into T2 so we can play LAN.

I also got an invite to HAWKEN - had a brief play. Really good so far! You've got reduced peripheral vision in a mech, and people can sneak up behind you easily. Each of your mechs has a full-on talent tree - offense, defense, and mobility - AND you can pick different weapons and have custom body work/paint jobs. It's a little clunky to operate the mechs, and that's deliberate. You can't hug the wall for cover, because you grind your mech up against the wall and it slows you down or even stops you.
Anyway, keep an eye on it.

2012-10-03 02:01:02 AM
Oh also, let's get real, PC World, a good 5-6 (at least) of those are going to sell WAY more copies on the consoles than the PC.

Crudbucket: I've been hopelessly addicted to Faster Than Light since it came out.

I just picked that up this afternoon; care to take a guess as to why I'm up several hours past my bedtime?

Hawken might be cool, and I guess I was in on the Banner Saga kickstarter just because the art was interesting. I can't really get into Torchlight II though, despite playing the first one a bunch. I got bored with Diablo III really quickly, but I can't tell if ARPGs are stagnating, or if I just don't care for them anymore (I've played Diablo II more than any other game by a large margin).

The one I'm really looking forward to is Dishonored, because it's a new IP, the style looks interesting (who doesn't want to be a badass supernatural assassin in steampunk/whale-oil Britain?), and because I loved the first two Thief games back in the day (the third, not so much). Also, Arkane Studios is cool (Arx Fatalis was rough around the edges but really inventive and enjoyable, Dark Messiah had some fun combat, and I guess they had a hand in Bioshock 2?). I hope it's good, and (if so) sells a bunch.

2012-10-03 02:09:18 AM
I already have the only two games in that entire slideshow that I'm even remotely interested in: Borderlands 2 (FRAKKIN' AWESOME!) and Torchlight 2 (only played a bit, but pretty good so far).

The entire rest of the list looks pretty meh. The types of games that I would buy a year or two later when they hit less than $10 on a Steam sale.

Only games I'm looking forward to at the moment are the new Tomb Raider reboot and Bioshock Infinite, and those aren't coming until spring.

2012-10-03 02:09:51 AM
slideshows are bad and you should feel bad

2012-10-03 02:10:54 AM
Also, I'm kinda ambivalent about the Assassin's Creed games, but if they set one in Victorian England, I would play it. Just picture: resurrectionists like Burke & Hare (maybe a bit too early in the century?), Springheeled Jack, Jack the Ripper, a Sherlock Holmes analogue, and pepperpot pistols, all lit by gaslight.

I guess what I'm saying is, I would play ANY game set in Victorian England, especially if it featured assassins or a Lovecraftian plot or something.

I preordered XCOM: Enemy Unknown a few weeks ago and then realized Dishonored is coming out. Ffffffff-

Hopefully Pandaria will be followed up with a Warhammer 40K inspired add-on that can be used to purify WoW from the resulting furry infestation.

FARK. THAT. GAME. I heard "game over" so many times I wanted to cry myself to sleep.

That being said, really good list. I'm really interested in the mech games, and the tactics one combines my love of table top gaming with giant robots

My list of shiat I want to play that I don't own yet, or isn't out yet:

Borderlands 2

Path of Exile
Torchlight 2

I tried Path of Exile...not my thing. I have TL2, it's amazing. The other 3 I have not played yet, due to GW2, TL2, FTL, and other random shiat. Also, Castle Crashers hit Steam, so that will probably be my next purchase. I would buy Borderlands 2, but I've yet to beat the first.

It's tough to get something greelit unless you can convince the financiers that you have a built-in audience and a reasonable expectation of decent sales.

I'll be playing some of those, but on PS3. It's a better platform.

The list, for those who ran from the slideshow like babies:

1) Borderlands 2
2) Mists of Pandaria WoW expo
3) X-Com: Enemy Unknown
4) Medal of Honor: Warfighter
5) Assassin's Creed 3
6) Need For Speed Most Wanted
7) CoDBLOPs 2
8) Epic Mickey 2
9) Hitman Absolution
10) Far Cry 3
11) SC2: HotS
12) Dishonored
13) Doom 3: BFG Ed
14) Skylanders: Giants
15) Hawken
16) The Banner Saga
17) The Walking Dead
18) End of Nations
19) Mechwarrior Tactics
20) Torchlight 2
21) MechWarrior Online

Notice there's only 3 original IP's in the bunch, and only one of those is AAA.

Nice to see most of those release on PC, though.

Wow. There's only two games I'm excited for off of the list...

I wish we had another "Skyrim" game being released. It's made the entire last year an enjoyable experience (yes, I've gone back to play it quite often). They just don't make games that damn fantastic too often.

sum it up well for me. I have been quite disappointed by some of the games that come out, especially ones that feature multiplayer. Too often multiplayer gets ruined by some twelve year olds who want to troll

I want to like Xcom but I know in my heart it won't be as addictive and scary as the original. The thrill at seeing a Grey standing in a cornfield, that weird neigh sound when you take him down, the epic street fights when Novosibirsk is invaded. Good times...

Although I'm pretty excited about X-Com, I wish the industry would stop calling tactical simulations and "Real-Time Strategy" games strategy.

strat·e·gy [strat-i-jee]
noun, plural strat·e·gies.
1.Also, strategics. the science or art of combining and employing the means of war in planning and directing large military movements and operations.
2.the use or an instance of using this science or art.
3.skillful use of a stratagem: The salesperson's strategy was to seem always to agree with the customer.
4.a plan, method, or series of maneuvers or stratagems for obtaining a specific goal or result: a strategy for getting ahead in the world.

In military usage, a distinction is made between strategy and tactics. Strategy is the utilization, during both peace and war, of all of a nation's forces, through large-scale, long-range planning and development, to ensure security or victory. Tactics deals with the use and deployment of troops in actual combat.

Only one person stoked about Far Cry 3? I admit the hero looks kinda Euro trashy but the FC series has never let me down.

Already playing Borderlands 2, great stuff there, totally tore me away from GW2.

Dishonored: Yes!
Mechwarrior Online: Woot! Just registered my pilot!
Mech Tactics: Hmm
Hawken: Hmm harder
X-Com: Not so much but will try.

Everything else, no thanks, I wont have the time.

FC2 was a horrendous sequel aimed at derpy console gamers... gone was all originality in favour of shallow graphics and endlessly repetitive "random" re-spawning encounters to "entertain" between the silly scripted rubbish... no surprises, no sci-fi gene manipulation tragedy.. straight up console-port garbage... (Crysis hardly did any better).

Why would FC3 be anything other?

Surely Xcom has both Strategy - the research, planning, economics, base placement etc and tactics - the actual fighting.

The Russians have a third tier - Operations.
