For a certain value of "viable". If his party could pull him off the ballot after the filing deadline and put another name up, trust me, they would.

You know, this stuff was available in the public domain for a while. it's not as if Akin decided to go crazy in the past few months. So you would think that they would have done some research on the guy before he carried the primaries.

Thank you Aidan for letting me get that out. I of course peeked at your profile and noticed you are also a fan of New Orlean's own Dick Freckle. His love of New Orleans, an adult beverage and a witty and wise sense of humor makes him one of my Fark favs, as well.

Dahnkster: We actually had a robo-call from the Akin campaign and we live in Florida. It came up on the caller ID, (yes I still have a home office land line and fax). They were soliciting for votes and money. Mrs. Dahnkster is still a registered GOP voter, but voting for Obama because she thinks the GOP is party is currently filled with batshiat crazy low information delusional cock suckers living in fear and anger for the greater good of their corporate penis wavers. We live in shiatkickastan and are surrounded by a poor uneducated white service class making things nice for the wealthy tourists who buy the condos, fence off the beach and eat and shop where these people work. Their concept of religion is so twisted that gun-petting Jesus hates the poor and all brown people who are seen as pretty much the source of all these worker bees woes. They are primarily C high school students who actually are ignorant of most things pertaining to science, finance, banking, global corporations and many have never been more than an 8 hour drive from the place where they were born and raised. They are indoctrinated by their pastors and churches, the Right Wing spin doctors, the good old boy political system that has remained in place since the early part of this century. Their racial attitudes have remained unchanged since the days of slavery.

The remainder of the population here also votes for the GOP because they suckle at the teat of the industrial military complex that supports the 4 large military bases in this area (Eglin AFB, Pensacola NAS, Hurlburt Field and Tyndall AFB) all within an hours drive. Because they live in a perpetual circle jerk inside this echo chamber, there is no politician too crooked (as long as he is Republican). There is not one thing that government can do that private enterprise cannot do better. So they are willing to give away their coasts for drilling, their beaches for over-development, their schools, prisons, law enforcement offices to privatize and rec ...

Have two. You make your own light in a meaningless life.

So, you live in Destin, huh? I lived in Mary Esther/FWB for 5 years in the early 90s... and good God, you are not kidding about that area. At least there was some semblance of underground culture over in Pensacola (are Sluggo's and Seville Quarter still around?) but it wasn't exactly New Orleans. I still tell people I lived in LA (Lower Alabama). Sorry for your luck, hope you can break out of there sometime.

Eh.... no, it's pretty shiatty regardless. at least, for some women. For others, not so much. The point is, it shouldn't be politicized because it's a deeply personal decision

No, being a lifelone connoiseur (often involuntary) of dominionist herp-a-derpage, no, this is beyond "crossing the Rubicon of stupid" and launching one's self head-first through a black hole into some dread universe where the laws of physics are JUST different enough to perpetuate what can be termed to be a literal Dimension of Dumbassitude of such gravity that even Bizarro (WORST SUPERHERO EVUR!) would, in his own back-asswords way, pronounce this a depth of derp completely incomprehensible and migraine-inducing to even the residents of that strange and cuboid planet he lives on.

Yes, kids--this is a level of Derp and Whargarbl that manages to make a certain Jesus Camper by the name of Sarah Palin look good in comparison. I have lived thirty-nine years amongst those hip-deep in the derp, even insisting that somehow gays were not only NOT targeted in the Holocaust but that the Shoah was apparently the product of some Big Gay Cabal (There Is No Big Gay Cabal), and even from their mouths I've never heard something so asinine.

What Todd Akin uttered may have reduced the total intelligence of the entire universe, prevented at least fifteen species on the edge of sophonce from ever figuring out how the hell to bang the rocks together, and made at least thirty other life-bearing planets with bacteria-analogues permanently stuck at the level of single-celled stromatiphore-form life due to the veritable vortex of stupid that has spread through the time-space continuum from the distilled, 200-proof level of weaponised dumbass that came from his mouth.

There are children living in institutional care facilities for people with intellectual disabilities who are now dying in convulsions in screaming horror in a vision akin to the Eldar race en masse dying as their souls are sucked out to form the lord Slaanesh. In fact, I will be shocked and pleasantly surprised if Todd Akin's utterance did not in and of itself birth a new Chaos Power--Lord Whargarbl, Lord of Derp, Keeper of Inanity So Dense That It Forms A Great Terror Of The Warp. It is entirely possible that Akin's utterance even has caused some Wave of Idiocy to travel forward in time to the point that it will eventually cause the Men of Iron to rise up against humanity...because they could not logically believe that their creators also birthed something so God(emperor)-damned dumb.

Seriously, it is impossible to understate the level of stupid here. Michelle Bachmann couldn't have beaten this if (on her Yom Kippur stunt) she had dressed in full Nazi regalia, came in goose-stepping to the tune of Deutschland Uber Alles (pre-1945 version), and led an altar-call for them to convert en masse to "Messianic Judaism" because Hitler was God's own agent in herding the Jewish population of the world to Jerusalem on a platter. (It would come close, but still not as stupid.)

Because GODDAMNIT, ABORTIONS DON'T WORK THAT WAY. ONE OF THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS TO BE ABLE TO PERFORM AN ABORTION IS THAT YOU HAVE A FETUS IN A UTERUS THAT NEEDS REMOVED BECAUSE IT IS DEAD OR THE PREGNANT LADY DOES NOT WANT TO HAVE A BABBY. PREGNANCY IS A PREREQUISITE TO BEING ABLE TO PERFORM AN ABORTION.

Otherwise, each and every time a woman has a gynecological exam--much less if a woman has tubal ligation or uterine ablation--OH GOD THE DOCTOR IS PERFORMING AN ABORTION, EVEN IF IT'S IN A CATHOLIC OWNED HOSPITAL THAT WILL NOT TOUCH ANY PROCEDURE LEADING TO PERMANENT INABILITY TO HAVE BABBY WITH A 40-FOOT BARGE POLE.

YOU CAN'T HAVE AN ABORTION WITHOUT AN EMBRYO, SHEISSEKOPF. THAT'S WHAT AN ABORTION IS--YOU'RE HAVING A MEDICALLY-INDUCED MISCARRIAGE.

If THIS is what dominionists are trying now to get women's clinics shut down--claiming that OH NOES WOMEN'S CLINICS ARE PERFORMING "ABORTIONS" ON NONEXISTENT GHOST-FETUSES!!!!11one! when in fact there are women who visit women's clinics that provide abortion for completely non-abortion related services like, oh, gynecological exams and prenatal care so they can HAVE BABBY...I'm about to the point of argument Akin and his ilk need hundredth-trimester abortions and may be walking advertisements in and of themselves why elective abortion should remain safe and legal so as to prevent such an abomination to be unleashed.

Seriously...you CANNOT HAS ABORTION WITHOUT FETUS. I have more of a goddamn abortion eating egss for breakfast and that's pretty much avian menstruation, NOT an abortion.

What next, being on the rag being declared a Crime Against Humanity and a form of abortion?...oh wait, someone so goddamn moronic (and I hereby apologise in advance to that population who have an IQ of 50-70 and in this more enlightened era are referred to as Educable Intellectually Disabled persons) probably would suggest that, who the fark am I kidding? (Seriously, it's IMPOSSIBLE to Poe these twunts.)

/seriously, this level of derp has given me a migraine.
//I am in dire need of alcohol, and kittens, and to generally forget that people this dumb exist and somehow retain just enough of a notochord to be capable of independent breathing

Akin is going to be a very good reminder over the next six years of the complete inability of the Republican Party to do anything but scaremonger to bigots. No wonder why Romney's plan to discredit the Bin Laden takedown is so desperately needed: without that figleaf of National Security, the Republicans are very plainly the anti-woman party. And Akin, much like Palin, will be their boat anchor to a wide variety of religious freaks shunning everybody but themselves.

The Republicans are making their own pitfalls at this point. Palin just isn't going to be the biggest, nor the last.

The_Homeless_Guy: He's actually somewhat correct in his messed up way. Abortion clinics will do D/C's for either retained products of conception or molar pregnancies. In both the procedure is pretty much the same as an abortion but the women aren't pregnant. Incidentally performing abortions is what makes physicians good at managing the above conditions (which are rare).

My sister had to get a D&C for something like that. It was explained to me that an unfertilized egg had implanted and she had an amniotic sac growing, but there was nothing inside it. When my mom told me she was getting a "D&C" to take care of it, I immediately thought, "So, she's getting an abortion? Huh."

And what sort of places do these bottom-of-the-food-chain doctors work in? Places that are really a pit. You find that along with the culture of death go all kinds of other law-breaking: not following good sanitary procedure, giving abortions to women who are not actually pregnant, cheating on taxes, all these kinds of things, misuse of anesthetics so that people die or almost die...

That sounds awful! We should illegalize these abortion clinics right now and force people to get these kinds of services on the black market. That'll help things!

And that is why I don't understand the Democratic Party. They surely must have some Democrat politicians who could clue them in on how to act in this situation. Is there really not a single Democrat who was born and raised in a small town in the Midwest?

Todd Akin is just standing up for women against medical malpractice, guys. Just the other day I was at the dentist, then BAM, ABORTION.

I protested, "But I just need a filling replaced, and -" and they told me, "NO, you're in urgent need of a preemptive abortion, you're at high risk to get pregnant."

"But, I just had my period, and I don't even normally date guys!" I said.

"Doesn't matter. You could run into jizz anywhere. Haven't you used a public restroom? A public swimming pool? Do you even remember where you were last night?" I was gripped with a sense of horror. My god! I DIDN'T remember last night! I was asleep THE WHOLE TIME! ANYONE could have inseminated me during my high-risk unconsciousness!

"Give me an abortion now!" I begged the dentist. "Just in case!"

"Don't worry," my kindly dentist replied. "Abortions are great. We'll put on Sex and the City, give you a soothing face massage, and pour you a white wine spritzer. Really, it's like a spa day for your uterus."

I felt so reassured and safe in their hands... until I got the bill. They charged me like $800 for my teeth cleaning and unnecessary abortion! They were just out for the cash grab the whole time! And fark Sex and the City, that show sucked!

We need heroes like Todd Akin.

I was thinking this exact thing. A friend's son had testicular cancer.. after treatment, he had to take pregnancy tests to see if the cancer had returned. Good thing the friend was an OBGYN who had easy access to large quantities of pee sticks.

/sadly, it did return.. he didn't make it past the age of 30.

This is not new. In crazy land, it's the reason Planned Parenthood opposes mandatory sonogram laws. They tell women they're pregnant when they aren't so they can pretend to give them an abortion and keep racking up the huge profits they make from abortions. The sonogram exposes the lie. Remember, PP is just all about selling abortions because they make monster big money from them.

One time I was lost in an unfamiliar area and went in to PP to ask directions. They said I could only get directions if I had an abortion first.

Yeah, that really, really sounds made up.

This is horseshiat. You can't just go into a place and get an abortion on demand. You have to go in, be looked at to see how far along you are, then you make an appointment to come back and have the abortion. FFS, it reminds me of this.....

If she's a fundy type you can always traumatize her with the knowledge that the physician was likely only able to perform the D&C due to the number of abortions they previously performed.

The Democrats are NOT one party. The Indiana branch tries to disown anything like a national platform at every opportunity. They try to out-conservitate the Republicans. The only single difference is whether they accept donations from unions.
'
The myth of a "Democratic majority" in Congress is one of the greatest propaganda victories of the Republican party. In the 2004 season, the Indiana Democrat Party was insolvent. The Indiana Republican Party paid their debts. This was reported in the Indianapolis Star. The reason they gave was that as long as the Democrat Party was viable, they could stop any liberals from actually standing for election in Indiana, and that any third party that replaced the Democrats (a 2 party system is basically written into the Indiana Constitution) would be unwilling to work with the Republican Party to sideline their lefties.

When the county chair will only support you if your family's support for the Democrats predated the Civil Rights Act, you know you are in Blue Dog territory.

I really wish the national parties would take a cue from other countries and kick out candidates that don't agree with the national platform. We'd end up with far more viable political parties. Binary politics are only slightly better than one party politics. The Blue Dogs and the Tea Partiers would be forced to go alone, or else the moderate Republicans and the progressives would have to find new homes. And I don't think that would be a bad thing.
