I was in Germany last year for a little over a week. I lost ~15lbs. Mainly due to walking everywhere.

Seriously, though. People wonder why folks in some other countries have such an easy time keeping weight off? Cuz they friggin walk to the train then from the train to work, and then to lunch and back, and then back to the train and then back home. It adds up.

Hey there.

People here don't drive their cars to the store around the corner. That's a big part of it. Also, walking and biking are a big part of the lifestyle over here. Also, despite the rich foods you can get over here (don't get me started on currywurst!) food tends to be a bit healthier. the veggies are locally grown much more often than what happens in the US with the giant factory farms.

The benefits of cities built before the automobile.
It's a beautiful thing to see people walking to and from places instead of cramped in cars, but of course it has its down sides.

When I go on 4 day drinking binges I drink about 2 18packs+ a day and eat nothing. By the time the week is over I usually lose about 10 pounds.

THIS! I drank more beer and ate more food that I ever have in my life in Leipzig area and STILL lost 5 lbs. I am not big to begin with or have any weight to lose. We walked everywhere because their cities were designed properly. When we weren't walking we would ride bikes. The place we stayed had about 3 flights of stairs to get up, so we would make that hike 4x+ a day.

^ can't be said enough.

When I was in the Army living on Okinawa without a car walking to the commissary and back lugging backpacks of food to my barracks room I lost weight like crazy. As soon as I got a car it started coming back.

I spent two months in Germany. I lost weight. Didn't care for most of the food. Granted, it was cafeteria food.

Just got back from visiting Berlin, ate well, and lost eight pounds.

Berlin is an awesome city. So many restaurants, the city is easily walkable but the transit system is top notch. I also lost weight over there but just a few pounds. I also like it that in Berlin you can just walk down the street with your beer.

I stayed at the Circus Hotel. Small rooms but a good room rate. The hotel staff were nice.

It's actually not hard to balance such that the slat isn't the landing point. Or you can just sit backwards.

Add me to the list of "went to Germany, ate tons and drank 3 liters of beer a day, and lost 10 lbs."

Walking and biking everywhere, and food being made of actual food FTW.

If you want to lose weight, I'd avoid Swabian food. Swabia is a region of southern Germany around eastern Baden-Württemberg and western Bavaria. Maultaschen and käsespätzle are great, but I'd hardly call them "light". Munich also has weißwurstfrüstück: a breakfast of sausages, pretzels, and beer.

Yeah, I went to Berlin for a week or so a couple of times and always came back a few pounds lighter. I live in a city and commute by bike, etc. so I don't get it.

I was in Greece for 2 weeks and lost a fair chunk of weight. Something about constant sun meant I could eat a spinach pie for breakfast and walk endlessly without further calories. It was magical.

So you don't actually lose the weight, it just shifts to the upper front of your torso? No thanks!

I loved Germany Deutschland, would love to go back and stay, permanently. Dornstadt, Ulm, Stuttgart, Dresden. Excellent weather, food, and of course beer.

Buddy wants to do Oktoberfest in Munich next year. Maybe I'll drop down to merely "overweight."

Yeah subby, when your beer isn't preservative-laden swill it can be decent for you in moderation.

/Of course moderation here in Wisconsin is the DD drinks a 12-pack before stopping for the night.

Most of the German food I had in Berlin was so heavy that I couldn't manage more than a couple bites. So I can believe this.

Maybe it's the German diet. Maybe it's the beer. Maybe it's the Romanian gangs that sneak into your hotel, doze you off with anesthetic, and perform impromptu liposuction in a small scale to sell you fat to the soap companies.

Mainly because little old ladies in gingerbread houses take care of the fat kids.

Those Romanians could totally charge for that kind of service.

Stayed in Heidelberg for college during the summer of '04. What a blast. Lots of beer, the Eurocup was on in the local pub, the weather was great...

Still think of it every time I hear Forca by Nelly Furtado or Dragostea din Tei by O-zone.

Specifically, lots of Schoefferhofer Hefeweizen, Binding Prima Pils, and Eichbaum Export.
