"The holiness of the room and the holiness of the evening was greatly diminished for me, if not completely destroyed," said Sircus, according to the Tribune. "Our congregation values and embodies tolerance, compassion, respect for individual rights, intelligence, science -- all of the things that I think Michele Bachmann stands against."

Ouch. That's gotta burn, Bachmann.

Maybe it's because Michelle Bachmann stands for the exact opposite of tolerance, compassion, respect for individual rights, intelligence, and science and he found it offense that someone who goes against everything his congregation believes was present because she needed a photo-op with Jews.

TFA says she was in Chicago, not her district.

I think its rude, IIRC Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year, its a solemn holiday, its not a "celebration" holiday.

There is a really blatant joke that could be made here about Ms. Bachmann being such a horrid individual that she causes a group of people who are know for being rather thrifty to, instead, give away money.

I can't come up with the proper phrasing, but if someone else wants to grab the low-hanging fruit...

If Bachmann can get the Jews to open their wallets with her mere presence then I might have to give a bit more credibility to her 'God talks to me' schtick.

Bachmann made the critical mistake of thinking that Jews are like Christians and will support you if you believe one thing they do. In this case, she believed that her support of Israel would make the congregation support her. Jews don't work like that. We like to consider the whole package.

I always find it out that Jewish people are often portrayed in politics about being very right wing. I'm no Bachmann fan (Goddess knows...) but it does strike me a little odd that the mere presence of her can cause someone to storm out of their synagogue. Neither the TFA or the Chicago Tribune piece it was cribbed from said she spoke or did anything in any way. I'm not telling Jewish people how to worship, but isn't Yom Kippur kinda supposed to be a time to acknowledge universal human frailties and the need for forgiveness--because we all make mistakes? Its one thing if she was giving a sermon or making a political statement, but can't anyone come to a synagogue for a service just to be there and sit there? It seems a little much than the mere presence of someone should be able to do this. To be overcome by hate to give hate power it doesn't deserve. Just IMHO, that's all.

Yeah... Of all the days to show up. I can't imagine a more inappropriate one. And not even in your home district.

We're not a proselytizing religion. Most synagogues will welcome gentiles to their services, but we're not actively searching for converts. The holiest day of the year is a bad time to pop in especially if you are a non jewish controversial figure.

It strikes me as a bit of the evangelical hubris that comes from being in a position of power in an insular community. She really loves Israel. The whole movement has this hard on for Jews like we're biblical reenactors reminding them of the life Jesus must have led. They never think that we could care less about their Jew fetish.

It really is. They didn't yell at her, they didn't tell her to leave. They were tolerant of her being there, they just didn't want to be in the same place as her. So, they left.

I honestly don't know where this idea that "tolerant" means "quietly accepting anything and everything" has come from. All it means is that you are inclined to accept differing opinions and beliefs, not that you will accept all of them, or that you won't speak out against the ones you don't agree with.

I don't know but perhaps you're only supposed to ask the forgiveness for mistakes, instead of making them right then and there?

Ouch. That's gotta burn, Bachmann.

Then why did they invite her?

Jews love drama. Temple drama in particular. People into the temple will do all sorts of stuff to sit closer to the front, and who is a good Jew and who is not is always a lively gossip topic. They'll be able to argue and jostle for social standing for YEARS after this.

You wanna bet that Bachman is one of the fundies who thinks that we must support Israel because the prophesies say that Israel must be destroyed before the rapture?

Sorta like the Twilight Zone episode, "To serve Israel.... On a platter."

Two Hasidic Jews were walking down the street one day. They ran into Abe, an old friend. When they ask how he was doing he said, "I'm doing great. I just hit the lottery for ten million dollars!."

Naturally aroused, they ask him what he did with the money. He replied, "I bought the biggest piece of property money could buy right in the heart of Berlin, Germany. On that property, I built a mansion and on my front lawn I put a solid gold life size statue of Adolf Hitler!"

His friends are completely shocked and couldn't believe what he had done. They said, "Adolf Hitler, are you crazy?"

Meh, people who think "tolerate" is an intransitive verb are dumb to begin with so I can't bring myself to feel loads of sympathy when other dumb people lampshade that fact.

You can't just tolerate, you have to tolerate something. You can't just arbitrarily be tolerant or intolerant, that's meaningless unless it's phrased as being tolerant of something.

That plus the constant g'shrei of "America is a Christian nation!" are the GOP's two best tactics to keep Jews voting 75-85% democratic every election.
