You know I could see "My opponent is one of them fancy-pants eggheads what thinks she's gooder than us reg'lar folk" working as an attack in parts of say TX or the more Banjo-dense regions of WVa, but in Massachusetts? Really, he thought was a good idea?

I think this is the sinking of the Brown ship. He had a really good opportunity here to give MA an option but instead he went full derp. Sad really as I was hoping he and people like him were going to kick out the teabaggers and take the GOP back over.. steering it to a more moderate and derp-free course. Welp.. I'm good with 12 more years of Dems in office.

In general maybe, but the educated people who buy into lies and religion are worse off because they think they can come up with more technical motivated reasoning to convince themselves they are correct.

makes sense though. if you try to analyze the GOP positions on various issues using logic, intelligence and historical context you just end up screaming until bloody froth shoots out your nose. that's why Republicans seem to favor people who aren't educated as their voter base. less cranial hemorrhaging that way.

It's part of their narrative that "Liberal Bias" in colleges. Their excuse for "everyone" being against them is consistently the shrill paranoid delusion that it isn't their message but some other factor outside their control.

And you can't be wrong if God is saying you're right. so when they lose it's because EVIL is working against them. By default, they're always right because God said so. And good and righteous people don't fail unless they devil cheats and trips them up.

Yes.. Somehow my cousin proved he was 1/16th Shawnee. Moved to the reservation and became a blackjack dealer.. met an indian girl and married her. Now he gets profit sharing checks and whatnot. There are also native american education grants available..

Depends on your tribe. It's kind of difficult to get on the tribal roll here. You have to jump through hoops to get on the list. I'm not sure how much of the decision-making is based on quorum (I'm not a member, just an employee), but I do know they take into consideration your ancestry and how far removed you are from current tribal members...

Really, the most confusing thing about Scott Brown's campaign is the way he's trying to turn her ancestry into the biggest political point of the campaign. He thinks that Massachusetts is racist enough not to vote for her because there might be a drop of Native American blood in her?

I think his supposed point is that he is saying she isn't Native American and therefore lied PLUS benefited from ostensible preferential treatment due to this racial identification, so he's trying to gain more votes from people who don't like lying (as he says she did) and people who don't like affirmative action.

Given this part, I'd say the latter:

During the testy one-hour debate, moderator David Gregory of NBC asked the Democrat if she felt Brown was "needling" her by routinely referring to her as "Professor Warren."

"It doesn't bother me. I worked hard for this," said Warren, who grew up in Oklahoma, the daughter of a janitor.

Still, Brown drew boos from the audience when at one point he interrupted Warren, saying, "Excuse me, I'm not a student in your classroom. Please let me respond."

/doubly amusing because everyone knows law school professors use the Socratic Method where the whole point is to let the student talk themselves to the correct conclusion (or out onto an unsupportable legal limb)

2012-10-02 01:10:39 PM

DID she get any "preferential treatment" from claiming Native heritage? Did she try to get her tribal rights somewhere by claiming her whole 1/32d blood? Or did she, like so many people across the country, merely trot out her supposed Native blood as some kind of claim to fame? A lot of people do, it's no big deal. But if she can claim tribal affiliation and the tribe accepted her claim, then it's not a lie and she's entitled to whatever preference the tribe gets.

It's kind of an either/or here. Either she has tribal affiliation and thus gets whatever benefits come with it; or she's no different from any body else--some of them right here on Fark--who like to say they are 1/whatever Native American and no harm to anyone. But you don't get the former WITHOUT approval from a tribe.

I don't remember the exact quote, but Scotty was trying to play up all the foreign policy experience he's gained while finishing Ted Kennedy's term by saying he regularly meets with ambassadors, prime ministers and "kings and queens". His spokes-flack came out with something along the lines of "not intended to be a factual statement".
