Teufelaffe: Cyno01: Because he does. Although im not sure that its something to criticize him for, lots of directors do that.

Interesting table, but it's kind of silly that they list Firefly and Serenity separately.

And Buffy and Angel. Angel was a spin off that had characters moving between the shows. It can't really count as repeat casting if they are playing the same character!

Merge Buffy/Angel and Firefly/Serenity and then take out Much Ado which is a get together of his friends and making a movie in his own home and the list looks a lot less impressive.

Plus Jeremy Renner and Chris Hemsworth were already in The Avengers before Whedon got attached. He didn't cast them. Pure coincidence he'd worked with them before.

Flint Ironstag: Whedon didn't hire Eliza Dushku for Dollhouse. It was her development deal with Fox first, then she got Whedon on board. He didn't hire her, she effectively hired him.
Amy Acker was never a regular on Dollhouse, she was just 'Recurring' and only in a handful of episodes.
Topher (Fran Kranz) has never been on Buffy or any other Whedon TV series.

From Dr Horrible 'that guy from Big Bang' was Simon Hedburg and he never appeared on Buffy.

If you want to get pedantic about Dushku, from the IMDB trivia page on dollhouse:

"Eliza Dushku and Joss Whedon came up with the premise of the show, while having lunch and talking about her career options."

And, as for Dr. Saunders, well have to agree to disagree, i think over half the episodes is more than a handful. But again from the IMDB trivia:

"The character of Dr. Saunders was originally written to be much older, but Joss Whedon rewrote the character so he could cast Amy Acker."

But i stand corrected on Hedburg and Kranz, i coulda sworn they were the nerds on buffy, but i guess not.

I take your point on Amy Acker, she was in more episodes than I thought, but still wasn't a regular, of which there seven.

That lunch meeting Dushku and Whedon had was because she had already signed the deal with Fox and asked him to lunch for advice. So he didn't hire her, he agreed to work on her production deal with Fox. Fox had already agreed to make a show starring her, before Whedon got involved.

The point is with every new show he has made he has overwhelmingly hired new actors for all the main roles, yet this myth of "he only hires the same actors again and again" continues. From what I can see he hires the best actor for the part, whether he's worked with them before or not. Lots of producers and directors do far worse. Look at Ricky Gervaise guessing Helena Bonham Carter as the leading lady for the Tim Burton movie in that scene with Johnny Depp.

robohobo: HeartBurnKid: FirstNationalBastard: Fano: FirstNationalBastard: Spunky young girl who can kick ass, brooding heartthrob with a dark past, brooding bad who turns good to impress spunky young girl who can kick ass, nerdy guy who turns into an asskicker, and snobby girl who turns out to have a heart of gold?

As long as Fin Fang Foom is present, I'm there.

[i6.photobucket.com image 799x659]

Have they ever explained why the hell Fin Fang Foom wears shorts? I mean, I can't imagine a giant f'n dragon making clothing a high priority...

He doesn't always. And what, you have a hankering for some dragon cock?

Doesn't everyone?

Not to mention Scorcese, Tarantino, etc. Silly to not want to work with someone who you know understands your process.

Stop trying to make Eliza Dushku happen.

Eustacia Vye: Stop trying to make Eliza Dushku happen.

Especially since I have no plans on letting her out of my basement.

I actually agree with many people who said she was wrong for Dollhouse. She's got that 'look' that some actors have that means you always see 'them'. Like Sean Connery. Even when playing a Russian sub captain you are never in any doubt he is Sean Connery. In the right part he, and Eliza, are great.

It also didn't help that she was already known, even typecast, when the show appeared. Accepting her as different characters each week was always going to be a struggle. Enver Gjokaj nailed it, but how much of that was helped by the fact we'd never seen him before?

Where's Dum Dum Dugan? Clay Quartermain? Countess Fontaine? Gabe Jones? Izzy Cohen?

They're the characters that should be the focus of a SHIELD TV series.

WhoGAS: bluenote13: I think the initial reviews were not as bad as you would expect. Smallville suffered from what a friend called "Lana-itis".

That's exactly why I stopped watching it. If i saw her whiny little crying face again, I was going to lose it. If she'd had pulled a Vanessa Hudgens (I could bear to imagine her nude through Journey 2), I may have continued but I just couldn't take a chance at her showing up again.

OH DEAR GOD - 1000% THAT. The whole "do I tell Lana or not?" angst crap got old real fast, yet the writers beat that horse into a fine paste. Then they doubled down on the stupid and gave us the "Lana loves Lex" derpfest, which made me want to throw my TV into traffic. It's no coincidence that Smallville got way better after Kreuk left. (Too bad Rosenbaum left as well - he was the best Lex ever. Though at least his appearances on "Breaking In" made up for it)

No, they want to see what Whedon does.

I still miss Dollhouse

Dollhouse brought the ruckus, no need to be ashamed. Loved it, was also terrified by it.

Loved the show, hated the last few episodes.

jonny_q: Teufelaffe: Yeah, I'm thinking Gina Torres, Gina Carano, Katee Sackhoff, Rhona Mitra, Stana Katic, Charlize Theron...all would be exponentially better casting choices. Of course, of those, Gina and Katee are probably the only ones they could actually get.

Katoo Sackhoff has looked like hell is everything I've seen her in outside BSG.

Gina Torres is too busy being the awesome head of a law firm on Suits, which just finished it's second short season. That shows deserves better treatment than the 10-episode runs it's getting now. Everything about that second season was awesome, including her.

The 2nd season isn't over....just split into two parts. The second half of the season starts up in November.

Oh, and I completely agree with you on the awesomeness of Gina Torres and Suits. I can't wait to see what happens to that douchebag Hardeman and his pet rat Louis now that his ass was voted out of the firm.

I hope they take a lesson from Shakespeare: the best characters are conflicted characters. Like captain Mal: torn between his sense of honor and fair play, versus the law, versus his devotion to his crew, versus his financial need to turn in River.

trashy chavs... with super powers =D

All 3 seasons are free to watch on Hulu. Do it, you wankers, or i'll kick the shiate out of yer bloody arses!

Versus his desire to bend Inara over the cargo railing and drill her until they both walk funny.

To me, superheroes are boring because they are impossible. I want to see what regular humans can conceivably do, not what a stupid pointless deity can do.

Well, in the world of fiction, regular humans can do pretty much anything.

Being bored by the impossible sounds like a horribly drab and unsatisfying way to live life. You have my pity.

They should just let Quake run the show. I do like the idea of them battling all the Marvel C-list rouges. BATROC THE LEAPER FOR THE WIN!

My dad was like that. He wouldn't even watch cartoons like The Simpsons because "they aren't real."

Eventually he got old and all he would watch was C-SPAN.

Maybe you are unfamiliar with the concept of metaphor? Buffy The Vampire Slayer, for example, was never about vampires. It was about school, relationships, family, work etc. The monster of the week was only the B-Story used to contrast the A-Story.

Son of Thunder: Pashc: FTA: AGENT ALTHEA RICE | Also known as "The Calvary,"

So...she's a hill in Jerusalem where Jesus was crucified? That's an interesting alter-ego, I must say.

I came here to say that.

/shakes tiny cross in impotent rage

You know what would be weirder? If the Romans crucified someone on horse-mounted soldiers.

tom baker's scarf: SKYE | This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident - with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.

AKA Inaria

AGENT GRANT WARD | Quite the physical specimen and "cool under fire," he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He's a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he's the kind of guy that grows on you.

AKA Jayne or Malcolm

AGENT ALTHEA RICE | Also known as "The Calvary," this hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.

AKA Zoe

AGENT LEO FITZ and AGENT JEMMA SIMMONS | These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other's company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies - she deals with biology and chemistry, he's a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.

AKA Simon and River

Soon to be named agents: one who is a bit quirky and primarily is responsible for transportation and the delightful if slightly introverted and naive engineer that makes all the new toys and fixes stuff.

Christ just let him make Firefly and lets move on.

If you ever want to ruin Joss Whedon for yourself forever, watch Aliens Resurrection(1997) and Serenity(2005) back to back on a long afternoon at home. The characters aren't exactly the same... but the same facets are there, just in slightly different combinations. It doesn't take long to realize that Whedon has said all he's ever going to say via the medium.

That's kind of a silly thing to say... characters in two of his movies are similar, therefore everything he does is all the same?

Oh noes! Joss Whedon has a tendency to visibly embrace character archetypes and common but effective plot elements! What a hack!
