Indeed one day long after we're gone the Sun will enter its red giant phase as it starts burning helium and it will expand past Earth's orbit (not sure about Mars).

But fluctuations in the output of the Sun have been noted previously, as have changes in the Earth's orbit. Not enough to go full moonbat over, but enough that southern Greenland becomes a whole lot more like northern Scotland. We know this because Viking settlements in Greenland over a 1000 years ago were capable of raising sheep for food and raising crops that cannot now grow there (at least for the moment...). All that without massive increases in CO2 levels.

We'll need a whole lot more data, but Mars could well be going through a warming phase that will make it significantly easier to live there, much as the Vikings found Greenland not too shabby 1000 years ago (BYOA - bring your own air).

I grew up in Vancouver and of course you still get out and do things. And you do enjoy some aspects of the rain itself -- very fresh air, sound of the rain, etc.

However, two years ago I moved to California for work and I have to admit that I could never go back to Vancouver. The clincher is having kids and doing outdoor activities with them. In Vancouver, by the time my daughter was 7 her birthday had been rained out three years and her birthday is in middle of August! You basically cannot plan on any outdoor activity in advance in Vancouver, except possibly in September. Our wedding was hailed on, our Easter Egg hunts always sprinkled on, our camping trips always rained on, hunting trips always snowed on, half of Halloweens are rainy, etc.

In particular having your kids in sports sucks in Vancouver. In California, my daughter's soccer practices are invariably on balmy evenings, baseball is never rained out, etc. No more huddling under shelters, no more kids with frozen fingers, no more mud in your truck.

We are able to go for a hike every weekend. And so on.

Commuting is SO much more pleasant without the rain. No more commuting home in the dark, hydroplaning on HWY 1 or Lougheed Highway.

We had a big property in Vancouver, but could never enjoy it. BBQs were rained out, even if it was sunny the ground was soggy from rain the night before, etc.

Anyway, my point is that if you grow up in Vancouver you think it is normal to have rain all the time, but you really don't know what you're missing. As an adult, you can sort of power through the rain, but once you have a family you are missing out a LOT.

And I am someone who self-professed to LOVE the rain all my life.

Can you imagine being one of the first settlers? Some boats go to the Caribbean, others go to South America, a bunch end up in the continental US, but nooooo your boat lands in what is now Halifax harbor. I would bet a lot of colonial wives were pretty pissed off at their husbands for having a hangover on the day they went and booked their passage.

In the end I don't have to deal with the religious nuts down south so I'll take it. Well that and I'm in Vancouver, we don't get much of a winter.

I have no problems with rain, guess what when you walk in the rain you don't melt, you can use an umbrella and magically the items you 'carry outside' don't get wet, yah we still have summer and the women in bathing suits aren't 400 pounds like the states.

Must suck to go through life without being able to find solutions to the most basic of problems.

I too live in Vancouver, and I can tell you that it doesn't stop people here at all. The rain is relatively invisible in the winter (the rainy season). This works out great because everyone is already bundled up in water-proof winter gear, which happens to be remarkably waterproof. Using said gear, I still walk my dog, go hiking in the mountains (lower elevations were there is no snow), drive my car up and down hills. Being Canada, bikinis, shorts, and tank tops is for the summer, which is quite warm. Realistically, one could ask the same questions of any northern Washington State town, as the climate is very similar.

If the prospect of a long, wet, cold, sunless winter isn't your thing, no amount of convincing will do. But if you don't mind wearing rain gear, this is the best place to spend the winter.

As a Canadian, the temperatures in my city are anywhere from -30C (-22F) in the dead of winter and up to about +38C (100F) in the height of summer.

Those don't include 'windchill' or humidity factor. And that's living an hour south-west of Toronto!
