Well obviously it's not news when a cop is shot- they have a dangerous job. Border patrol officers are sort of like meter maids, their job is supposed to be super duper safe.

From the Fox News homepage, the article description:
"A US Border Patrol agent was shot and killed early this morning, and another wounded, near Naco, Ariz. Just two weeks ago the Naco station was named for Brian Terry, the Border Patrol agent murdered in 2010 with a gun linked to the botched anti-gunrunning program 'Operation Fast and Furious.'"

So they managed to already connect it to Fast and Furious as part of the newsflash.

The identities of the agents were not immediately released, but the shooting occurred at the Brian Terry Station near Naco, Ariz., which is just south of Tucson.

That's like Lou Gehrig dying from Lou Gehrig's disease - how could you not expect it?

The station was named after an agent who was killed in the line of duty in December 2010.

I suppose I could predict the bullet might fragment a lot as well and possibly hit whoever did the shooting, wouldn't be as lethal but man that would suck.

But my best prediction is anyone who got their hands on that gun would look at it, and throw it away or use it like a club... maybe eject the magazine to check if it has ammo to use in another gun...

It'll take a long time for that to help. We pretty much have a civil war in the neighbor to the south, and it bleeds into the border states, if you'll pardon the turn of phrase.

Time to have the border guarded by the Army, allow lethal force against anyone trying to sneak through.

I will say it again:
Our National Guard needs to rotate deployments along our own border.

They are better outfitted than the border patrol for that job, and I think cartel affiliates would think twice about shooting at National Guardsmen considering the firepower they would have access to compared to the current Border Patrol.

I prefer that in the original Stasi Öst Berliner German. Their wall was much more water proof.

Actually in Texas I continually ask my Border Patrol relatives why they aren't guarding our northern and eastern border where the shiat seems to leak in.  They just mumble something about government policy.

They have repeatedly told me that guns don't kill people, PEOPLE kill people. So the source of the firearm is irrelevant since the person holding it is responsible. If you are now so concerned about the guns causing problems, then it is the Conservatives that hate the 2nd amendment now.

The Border patrol isn't run by the State, it's federal.  Texas has more empty land and California has more people near the border, but Arizona is the problem child for some reason.

This is a serious question for me, what if Arizona doing wrong that those other states are doing right?

I think we should fix the border, but we should do it in conjunction with easing/fixing immigration laws. The immigration laws in this country make no damn sense. I know someone who's whole family migrated to the US when she was under 5. Due to an error the rest of her family was legal but she wasn't. It wasn't fixed till she was 27!

As a huge supporter of the 2nd Amendment and the right to keep and bear arms, I'm also a huge proponent of common sense laws like background checks, keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, keeping them away from kids, requiring background checks at gun shows, etc. Not all of us are Ted Nugent-esque assholes who walk around with boners because we're carrying a pistol. I'd be willing to bet there are many, many more gun owners like me, than there are those that fit your tiny brain's stereotype.

If a gun store illegally gave guns to criminals, I would expect that gun store to be shut down, and the owners prosecuted. I ask nothing less of the folks that knowingly gave guns to criminals across the border. Sorry they happen to belong to your party, but they should be out of a job, and in some cases, they belong in prison.

Well obviously it's not news when a cop is shot- they have a dangerous job. Border patrol officers are sort of like meter maids, their job is supposed to be super duper safe.

You are really misinformed. My brother in law was border patrol. It is not a safe job at all. People try to stab them, shoot them, run over them and throw rocks at them......big ones. There have been shootouts even at the main border crossing. The officers have to arrest people and testify in court against them. Drug cartels, individual dealers, or the families of those arrested can put out hits on the officers or their families. That is why my brother in law quit and went into the healthcare field. He was having a day out with his family and someone he had testified against came up to him in a restaurant and started some shiat. BIL realized that having a low paying job wasn't worth putting the lives of his children in danger.

Water takes the path of least resistance, as do drug smugglers and illegal immigrants. The war zone sections are the areas it is normally easy to cross. As those get patched up, the trouble spreads to the fringes of those zones. As those get reinforced, the trouble will spread further, etc.

Is every mile a problem? No. Is every accessible mile showing signs of increasing violence? Yes.

With the war in Dumbfarkistan closing down in a few years *sigh* watch to see the Blunder on Drugs start to heat up.

It's because our Military Industrial Complex is going to be casting around for some place to sell their death-wares.

If you wanted to stop the drugs issue you'd go after transportation (trucks boats aircraft) you'd go after the money (banks negotiable instruments, off-shoreisms).

If you really wanted to stop the war on drugs you'd go after the money. Nobody smuggles drugs for fun. Do you really think living the way it has to be (the continual threat of being shot and or killed) is fun? It's for the money, period.

Pull the money out of the equation and *poof* no more drug "problem".

My Father knows a rancher up in Oregon who had a Mexican foreman running things for him. We'll call him Juan. Juan did well for himself and the immigrantes that worked for him. Juan eventually bought a ranch of his own in Mex and paid the people that worked and lived on it a descent living wage - things were good for everyone -- for awhile. Not a long time later Juan was confronted by other ranchers in the region who told him they would kill him if he din't start paying his workers the same meager wages that they were paying their hacienda workers.

Proximity to Mexican towns owned by drug cartels, and smuggling routes.

Apparently living free means living free from math.

I'll be voting for Gary Johnson. He may not win, but I'm not going to waste my vote on either of the headliners.

That's nice. That still doesn't answer how Mitt Romney's policies would make like safer for the border patrol. But that's nice.

By 1918 the Yaqui people had been at war with Mexico for several years, the former hoping to establish an independent state in Sonora, centered around the Rio Yaqui and its confluence with the Gulf of California. Many Yaquis were driven north by the war and some crossed the Arizona border to work in Tucson's citrus groves. After receiving pay, the Yaquis would spend their money on weapons and ammunition and then return to Mexico to continue fighting. The fact that Yaquis were buying arms in Arizona and smuggling them across the border became so well known that the military governor of Sonora, General Plutarco Elías Calles, informally requested help from the United States government in dealing with the problem. Furthermore, Arizona ranchers began reporting in larger numbers their encounters with armed Yaquis on their ranch land or the finding of butchered livestock on the range. Since the United States Border Patrol did not yet exist, the task of protecting the border was that of the army, which operated out of Fort Huachuca. The Nogales, Arizona subdistrict commander, Colonel J.C. Friers, 35th Infantry, responded to the reports by issuing orders to increase patrolling in the area. American forces in the area included the 35th Infantry Regiment, stationed at Camp Stephen D. Little in Nogales, and the 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers, who were spread out to protect the various towns near the international border. A squadron size force from the 10th Cavalry was encamped about a half mile from the 35th Infantry at Nogales and a second squadron split up to occupy Lochiel and Campini. Smaller posts were also established at Arivaca and Oro Blanco and, finally, a troop of about thirty men maintained a camp at Atascosa Canyon, a "strategic natural crossing" within Bear Valley.[1][3]

According to Colonel Harold B. Wharfield, who interviewed some of the participants in the Bear Valley fight and published his story in the book Tenth Cavalry and Border Fights, wrote that the camp was located in a dangerous "uninhabited region" where "unconfirmed mysterious disappearances" often occurred and people were advised to travel in groups.

Since drugs are illegal...
The question to ask yourself here is whether you want to work a day job for $1 to $2 per day, or if you want to run drugs for significantly more.
In this case, the answer was drug smuggling.
So now the question is "do I get paid enough to murder a US Law Enforcement Officer" vs. "What will happen when I go to prison and my boss finds out I lost a shipment?"
I honestly don't know, but I'm sure they can get at you in prison, and I'm sure your family wouldn't be safe. Or maybe I watch too much TV.

I'm still wondering what significance the words "young" and "party" and "residential area" hold in this case. Without knowing details, I just read that these people were targets in Ciudad Juarez. There was probably a reason for it. Ciudad Juarez is a war zone.
In Ciudad Juarez I'd prefer to be shot with US firearms instead of having my tongue (or other body parts) cut out.

I guess that would depend on whether or not the dealer followed the law in the transaction, wouldn't it.

But given that BATFE instructed dealers to release firearms to known straw purchasers, over the dealers' complaints that they believed the buyers to be straw purchasers, that isn't the case.

Nice false equivalence, though.

James!: Tucson has a pretty liberal sheriff if I recall corectly.

" The attention put on Sheriff Arpaio in Phoenix allows for Tucson Police Chief VillaSenor and Sheriff Dupnik to appear 'progressive' as they make empty statements against SB1070 or sign documents that speak against Secure Communities use of traffic violations to run people for immigration status. For those whose communities are being destroyed by deportation, this means nothing. For the homeless that are being harassed daily, this means nothing. For those who fight to study their roots and defend Ethnic Studies, only to be brutally beaten by the police in the streets, this means nothing. To those behind bars on 29th street, this means nothing. To Jose Guerena who was killed by the Tucson police in his home, this means nothing. BUT, to many who are too dense, or too protected to feel such realities, this means Tucson is still a happy, liberal town that is, at least, 'better than Phoenix.' Yet in Tucson, informal racist policies such as 'police discretion' allow for Border Patrol to act freely, responding to any call from officers, regardless of 287g, SCOMM, or SB1070 laws of policies, but simply because we are within 100 miles of the border. This is grim situation, unique to border regions, that law officials love to conceal, while all the while winning over the white pawns. Another Tucson trick was Prop 100 last year, which had almost unanimous support due to a focus on 'saving schools', when in all actuality much of the money was shoveled into the police department."

Sheriff Dupnik stated the SB1070 law will not change the way his department deals with possible illegal immigrants.

Basically, his department is secure, and competent enough to deal with illegal immigrants they way they always have. They don't need a racist 'crutch' law to help them snare more brown people and Native Americans they way Arpaio's clan is doing.

Sheriff Dupnik has overwhelming support from many people, and will secure another term as sheriff this November.

In their make-believe land, nothing is important except making fun of those who disagree with them, because that's all they can do. To gun owners it's been proof of how incompetent the BATF has been, and how pointless gun control still is.
We know full well that criminals can get guns by other means. But we play the game of background checks and paperwork. We have the BATF arbitrate the difference between rifles and pistols, putting people in jail when they screw up the definition.
We go through all this for the illusion of security.

...and then the Feds take a truckload of weapons and BACKS IT THE FARK UP at the doorstep of our enemies. Saying "take whatever you want, it's your motherfarking birthday!" .

The moment that's done, they come back to hassel the legit buyers with their "papers please" bullshiat.

Why are you advocating that people in the US be allowed to violate Mexican immigration law by freely walking across the southern border wherever they please? By the way Mexican immigration law is far tougher than ours in the US so those people would potentially receive much worse penalties, including up to two years in prison, were they caught under the lax regard for Mexican sovereignty that you suggest - illegal immigration is a felony there.

Yet when I was in El Paso for a month and a half and staying less than a mile from the border of Cuidad, the only folks who were scared shiatless were non locals. Hell the retired SF guys I worked with switched hotels.

To paraphrase the response I got from El Paso and Cuidad folks when I asked them about the violence. "Wait dont you live outside DC? How do you live there? Dont you send your kids to school in Bulletproof vests and have to drive around the running gun battles?" The residents of Cuidad who came over to work in El Paso all said that there are areas that you just do not go to, or stop in. They didnt associate with the cartels or the cops and while the "war" was real, it was not like the news made it sound.

Surprisingly, that is the same basic response that I have gotten from Detroit residents, Cleveland Residents, Israelis and Chicago residents as well.

The Second Amendment had nothing to do with deer or burglars.

You don't need an arsenal to shoot Congresscritters, either, unless you've got a militia to tote them, in which case each one can get his own damn gun.

With this, I crown you with Troll Yellow.

LOL! Fark definition of a troll: someone who says something not according to Liberal Dogma. It is SO much easier to call names than, you know, actually respond rationally to a post.

It is a fact that virtually all of the people I see here in OC that have Obama bumper stickers on their cars are driving newer and more expensive cars. This actually makes sense; people often vote their pocketbook, and those who have prospered under the current administration will tend to be conservative and not vote for change.

Then there is the group of very poor, especially the homeless, who are voting for Obama so that the government support continues. (Though, surprisingly, there are a few homeless I know who are voting for Romney. They seem to be doing so because they are concerned about the long term direction the country is going. Personally, I don't give a shiat, anymore.)

GARY JOHNSON 2012

LIVE FREE!

Gary Johnson will not win. Either Mitt Romney or Barack Obama will be in charge of the border patrol.

Apparently living free means living free from math.

I'll be voting for Gary Johnson. He may not win, but I'm not going to waste my vote on either of the headliners.

That's nice. That still doesn't answer how Mitt Romney's policies would make like safer for the border patrol. But that's nice.

Relax man, It's apparent to everyone you have it out for Romney and that you're so far left, you're out of frame, but this guy just wants to vote for his independent. Stop trying to 'force' the conversation to go in your direction. Besides, their are plenty of Romney supporters in this thread already. Give 'em a whirl.

Nope. Good attempt at dressing up the strawman, though. I don't believe that violent felons or mentally disturbed individuals should have access to guns. This includes Mexican drug cartels. As you can tell, i seem to disagree with Holder about this (among other things)

// 30 seconds or less is my guess.

I can always count of liberal farktards, especially those here on Fark, to respond to a tragic event by mocking people (in this case, Romney/Republicans), who have nothing to do with it. In their make-believe land, nothing is important except making fun of those who disagree with them, because that's all they can do. They are too stupid to actually debate opposing point of views, and that scares them and makes them feel insecure, so they lash out. And this is proven again, and again, and again, in just about every fark thread.

And conservatives can't resist making themselves feel so damn persecuted all the time even when it's something they didn't even do.

Jesus Christ, you guys are nothing but a bunch of whiny biatches. No one outside of your group think gives a shiat about how persectued you feel so give it up already!

The reality is that our FIRST instinct is to line Derp dims up at the edge of a ditch and put a .22 long in the back of their heads.

(We could double the national IQ overnight, and you want to use a .22 because, with the number of dims that have been allowed to breed, your hand gets sore from the recoil of something heavier...)

HOWEVER, morally, from a Christian standpoint, Eugenic Cleansing, although deeply satisfying from a logical and emotional perspective, cannot be justified.

Keep in mind, though, the the technology is on the shelf...(Something you might keep in mind when Obama and his scum supporters start whining about Christian influences in government.)

adragontattoo: fickenchucker: Laugh it up, non-Arizona residents.

We have friends and relatives in Tucson who are scared shiatless about the encroaching crime. Nogales is under siege financially because of the lost tourism resulting from the insanely-increased crime rates.

America deserves better from all the politicians and a DMZ at our southern border.

We're saying the same thing, in the sense crimes rates are rising, the war is real, people are dying due to the gang fighting, and certain areas are getting worse. Of course not every street looks like a battlefield. But more and more of them are. We need a secure border to keep out drugs, gangs and illegals. Legal immigrants would have to be paid legal wages, though, with taxes legally withheld from them, and a head of lettuce would cost $6. This is why illegal immigration is tacitly tolerated by the US.

First, I seriously doubt that there are very few people on Fark whose minds will be changed by ANY post by ANYONE. It's the nature of the forum.

Second, if I was Dictator, instead of Obama or Romney, here is what I would do about the illegal immigration issue:

1) First, all of the below to be done on a two or three year timetable so people can adjust.

2) National ID card. By specifically stated law CAN NEVER BE USED as a financial card in any manner shape or form. This to prevent (possibly justified) paranoid concerns about cancellation by some government agency and "anti-government agitators" starving to death.

3) You MUST have this card to work. Period. All employers subject to snap random audits and to be fined at 5% of their prior year (or current year if new) Gross Income for EACH individual violation. Hire 20 illegals, you lose ALL of your sales dollars for the year.

4) Legalize ALL drugs. This will break the power of the Cartels, which is one thing holding back economic progress in Mexico, which is a big reason Mexicans flee to the US (this from an illegal alien friend of mine, so I assume he knows what he is talking about).

5) There are all kinds of consequences, some unintended and unforseeable, of (3). There will be needed adjustments in the health system as a result. But I digress.

6) Also from my friend: lean on the Mexican government to clean up their corruption. There are seven families in Mexico that own or control 80-90% of the wealth, and control ALL of the political power of both parties. (Similar to this country, except there are more Players.)

7) Possibly - until the government and back-stage controllers of Mexico play nice with their people, lend comfort and support to the Chiapas and other rebel movements. This would be the ultimate biatchslap if the Mexican government ignores less strenuous efforts.

8) Teens and 20-somethings here illegally when they were brought here by their parents as babies: give them amnesty and citizenship IF they are not criminals and meet minimum requirements of excellence. Their parents, OTOH, go back.

9) The National ID card will cause many illegals to self-deport. That's OK, because the government will give ALL leaving illegal aliens a one-time $5,000 cash payment which will help them get on their feet wherever they go back to. (At 12 million illegals, that's $60 billion - drop in the farking bucket for the government. That's a couple of dozen advanced fighters.)

10) Alternatively, existing illegals can ask for amnesty and either pay a large fine to gain citizenship, or perform a set period of community service (including military service).

11) Rotate active army units to all borders and ports to check INCOMING ONLY traffic. This will help them earn their pay, keep them busy, and keep the borders secure from future illegal traffic. Bonus: might even catch AQ and similar operatives, like what happened that time on teh Canadian border with the guy that was going to attack LAX.

There's a few other things, perhaps, but Starbucks is closing and I've gotta shut down.

Just Another OC Homeless Guy: 4) Legalize ALL drugs. This will break the power of the Cartels, which is one thing holding back economic progress in Mexico, which is a big reason Mexicans flee to the US (this from an illegal alien friend of mine, so I assume he knows what he is talking about).

Your illegal pal has proved himself smarter than most US citizens.

muck4doo: EVERYBODY PANIC: Just Another OC Homeless Guy: PallMall: Just Another OC Homeless Guy: Sorry, I want to continue the government subsidies I'm getting. Voting for Obama (and getting more of your money).

BTW, thanks.

Well, when shiat finally hits the fan (and it will - eventually), pray that you're long gone from this earth. Wouldn't want you to starve for lack of outstretched hand to feed you.

I'm betting, from the amount and degree of libtard derp on Fark, that it will continue for many, many years. Seriously, there are SO many deluded people in this country!

Hello OC Homeless Guy,

Well, you've had quite the busy day here fighting the war on whatever it is you are fighting for and about. Honestly, would you please make a clear, statement regarding what you think is the CORRECT way to handle all the border problems? You enjoy lashing out, and on fark.com, that is considered to be just fine. But you are not changing minds or hearts by frontal attacks. You are smart enough, and have thought about these things long enough, to be able to write and post an explanation of where America went astray regarding border matters and immingration in general. By doing so, by offering a positve program for future stability and happiness, you will become recognized as the smartest guy in the forums. Whatever you post, if it be a positive proposal, I will read and give it a serious consideration. Others will too.

You've shown us that you can attack people with whom you disagree. Can you also build something that can make our world a better place? Please do. This is a serious request. Please don't just rant, but help shape the debate, and win the hearts, minds and kudos of the other readers. Thanks.

LOL! You really think anyone on Fark is trying to make the world a better place?

Actually... perhaps. I just come here (like you) for the entertainment. But on occasion, I enjoy engaging the loudest guy in a thread to see if he is able to articulate anything other than venom. I have been rewarded with a bit of insighfulness here and there. On occasion, the loudest guy replies with something worthwhile. I just dig watching farkers trying to articulate anything at all. Lot of smart folks here, but with brains usually stuck in reverse.

First, I seriously doubt that there are very few people on Fark whose minds will be changed by ANY post by ANYONE. It's the nature of the forum.

Second, if I was Dictator, instead of Obama or Romney, here is what I would do about the illegal immigration issue:

1) First, all of th ...

Wow. Hey, thank you for taking time to write this. I could tell from your earlier posts that you were pretty unhappy with the situation regarding the border, but you never explained what you wished would be done to make things better. Your post is thoughtful and well expressed. And were it taken seriously, it would probably solve a lot of the problems you addressed. Good job.

UNAUTHORIZED FINGER: washington-babylon: We need a new "Popular" war. Let's declare war on Mexico with Annexation as the end goal.

We'll be greeted as liberators!

We DO need a wall. Twenty feet tall, all the way around Arizona. And when it's complete, stick a hose in there, and fill it up.

My friends are in Flagstaff so I don't see any drawbacks to your plan.
