Sounds like it helped finesse us into not being able to afford a manned space program.

Is it sad that I'm reluctantly giving them credit for inadvertently admitting that massive defense expenditures had something to do with the demise of the Soviet Union, not simply that the Berlin Wall fell because Saint Ronnie flexed his mighty bicep of freedom?

I mean, if one of your co-workers shiats his pants at his desk every day if there comes a day he actually gets up and almost makes it to the bathroom before shiatting his pants you're going to give him a hearty "atta boy," right?

I drove a Soviet car once. No way I'm getting in a Russian space ship.

Star Wars had nothing to do with the collapse of the Soviet Government, which never increased its spending. Yes, you read that right. They did not increase spending. The system fell on its own because it was run by senile imbeciles who staged elaborate parties and gave each other medals instead of actually governing. Bubbles burst on their own. Star Wars was supposed to bankrupt the Soviets. It bankrupted the United States.

Seriously? This is what they're going with today? Reagan's pet "Star Wars" had nothing to do with space exploration. It was more akin to sharks with laser beams on their heads. The Soviet Union was doomed to collapse anyway. Yes, part of it was trying to keep up with our insane spending during the cold war, but it had more to do with bad economic policies and their clusterfark excursion into Afghanistan. Besides that, which party is always clamoring to cut NASA's budget? Does Romney have any stance on NASA? Was Obama supposed to use his time machine to fix the Constellation program?

Honestly, these guys are getting so desperate that it's downright sad.

Umm.... how about no?

Considering Star Wars never made it into space, calling it a Space Program at all is ludicrous.

And we have to hire the Russians because the Shuttle program reached its planned expiration date. Much more than that, this date was extended several times. The things were old, expensive, and dangerous. Its not Obama's fault that the shuttle replacement wasn't approved and finished prior to his administration.

And another thing: the Space X program (as shown by the successful launching of Dragon earlier this year) is a great success. How is encouraging private US companies to do the basic load lifting into space a bad thing, especially if they do it better, cheaper, and safer? Oh wait, its not. I'd say its worth the two years or so of piggy backing with the Russians (which we have been doing for routine missions ANYWAY for the last few years considering the shuttles kept getting grounded) until Space X's Dragon is fully rated for human beings.

It collapsed because they separated income from production (everybody got a, to coin a phrase, living wage). Any society that attempts to consume more than it produces will fail... as the US and much of Europe is finding out.

Not true. He was pretty gifted when it came to finessing illegal arms deals and funding illegal wars in South America.

Reagan should be remembered as a traitor and a criminal.

that and the fact communism is an oppressive regime that claims to "work for the people".

One of the funny things I find about american propaganda is this whole "the profit motive drives capitalism!". Well, thats great and all, what profit motive to the workers have again? You know, the ones that do all the work and productivity? Oh yeah, thats right, they only have set wages that have been decreasing for 30 years, and the only motive to work is to not get fired. Real productive alright, almost like corporations are fascist entities designed to keep the rich powerful and the poor poor. But will anyone care? no, we got better things to worry about than wages, I mean GAY MARRIAGE!

I did some contract work for a guy in Dallas back in the late 90's who has an AS/400 in his home talking to his other one at his office.

He owned an optics company and said he helped make parts for particle beam weapons that were up there and working.

I didn't know whether to believe him or not.

Wait, it was massive increases in US military spending that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union now?

I thought it just imploded after Reagan headbutted the Berlin Wall into rubble that one time.

Pretty sure I heard that on FOX. Guy sounded sincere.

Actually, both Russian/Soviet and American operational accident rates are about the same, approximately 4.5%. The American rate is considerably higher if you include training fatalities.

I worked with Russian engineers from RSC Energia on the ISS program for over 15 years and trust me, they really know their stuff when it comes to manned spaceflight operations. The NASA folks at JSC have enormous respect for the Russians as well.

Yeah, that guys "optics company" makes "spare parts" for "particle beam weapons" that are "up there."

I happen to work (tangentially) in an industry that makes things that go into space. There is no such thing as "spare parts" anymore. I keep telling em I'll go up and make the repair myself, free of charge, but for some reason I keep hearing "no".

I'm not exactly an apologist for St. Ronnie and His Followers. But you should probably note as well that Reagan's massive defense spending might not have triggered an increase in Soviet defense spending, but it might have discouraged them from cutting that spending. To the extent that they may have wanted to shift to domestic spending, their fear of St. Ronnie the Mad discouraged it.

Of course their Afghan adventure made that harder anyway...just as our own Afghan and Iraqi adventures have lately.

If brave Ronald and his brand of brilliant economic and foreign policy was the genius tool that bankrupted the Soviet Union, then it wasn't a rotten system that would inevitably collapse because it was inherently evil and unworkable.

These clowns can't have it both ways.
