Why exactly is "How can you support a Mormon?" a dirty trick when used against a Republican?
The GOP has been pushing religion as a voting issue since Nixon's so called "Moral Majority" days.
They nominate a guy with fringe beliefs and expect Democrats to rewind back to pre-1968 days?
After spending the last four years attacking the Democratic candidate on religious issues?!?!
You know what? fark you and your cult-freak candidate.
I hope Obama puts on a full-throttle anti-Mormon campaign that mocks the magic underwear, the "jewish" native americans and all the rest.

Well, difficult to find among Catholics.

Satanic_Hamster: But *if* you were dumb/asshole enough to do this, why target Catholics? Wouldn't Evangelicals be a better target for this type of douchebaggery?

There's a segment within a couple generational cohorts where kids at Catholic schools were quite commonly and particularly taught that the Mormons were a cult.

Has anyone considered that it might be a plot from some of the crazier conservatives such as Perry, Santorum, or Brownback to make sure that the party swings even further to the right. It would definitely be easier to run in 2016 against whomever the Democrats put up that it was this year against Obama.

No, no, no... the text which is held sacred came from Liarville, Pretendland, whereas all branches of study of the Catholic faith are in Bullsh*tberg, Pathalogica. Council of Nicaea FTW!

Somacandra: Carth: Somacandra: That's a new one--more common to liberal Protestants than Mormons. Gonna have to provide evidence for that.

A famous aggressive ex-Mormon ministry citing Bruce McConkie, who was repudiated by the Church for exactly the stuff like this? Sorry. That's not evidence. You might as well cite Mitt Romney's website to describe Barack Obama's policies.

So are you saying the quotes by Brigham Young are not real? Or just not important?

" "The birth of the Saviour was as natural as are the births of our children; it was the result of natural action. He partook of flesh and blood-was begotten of his Father, as we were of our fathers," (Journal of Discourses, v. 8, p. 115).

Brigham Young also said, "Now, remember from this time forth, and for ever, that Jesus Christ was not begotten by the Holy Ghost," (Journal of Discourses, vol. 1, p. 51).

Brigham Young said, "When the time came that His first-born, the Saviour, should come into the world and take a tabernacle, the Father came Himself and favoured that spirit with a tabernacle instead of letting any other man do it. The Saviour was begotten by the Father of His spirit, by the same Being who is the Father of our spirits," (Journal of Discourses, vol. 4, 1857, p. 218)."

A religion is simply a cult that has gained significant financial backing. With that backing comes certain gravitas, which combined with humanity's natural tribalism, produces large groups of dedicated followers over time. As time passes, the cult behavior becomes integrated into a society, forming a religion. Religions are cults.

Penn Jillete's take on things

If you want the relevant bit, jump to about 4 mins in, but the whole thing is good. To summarize tho', it's only in semi-recent history that the word "Christian" came to overpower the individual sects of Christianity. Go back a few decades, and being a Catholic was just as "bad" (if not more so) to a Protestant as being, say, a Muslim or a Jew.

So yeah, back in those days, being a Mormon would have been a huge issue, and there's no way Mitt would be in this election. But thanks to them deciding to effectively band together, suddenly it's not a big deal, despite the fact that Mormonism is so crazy-out-there that they actually believe that "God" lives on a planet caled Kolob. If you were to talk to a Protestant/Catholic about Mormon beliefs, without mentioning first off they are a branch of Christianity, most of them would likely consider it heretical - at best.

Why not fix the problem now! No fuss, no muss, and for one week only, we'll give you a free iPhone 5 with each fetus brutally murdered!"

Religions are cults in the exact same way that cities are towns.
This does not "diminish the utility of language" in any meaningful way.
Rather, it reminds the reader that despite the difference in scale, they are fundamentally the same.

2012-10-02 10:04:37 AM

Somacandra: But you never hear Catholics or Protestants telling the media that Egyptians Coptic aren't Christians.

Actually, until very recently, the Catholic position was that they weren't.

Or something like that. I'm not at all clear on what exactly the state was before, but in 1973, the Catholics and the Oriental Orthodox (of which Coptic Orthodox is a part) got together to say that they both seemed to be saying the same thing, except that they were using different phrasing. Catholics say Christ is of ``Two natures: fully God and fully man,'' while the Oriental Orthodox say he is of ``One nature: fully God and fully man.''

And thus, for 1500 years, the Catholics and the Oriental Orthodox couldn't be friends.

"We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may."

People worship God in many different ways. Not everyone is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But we are all children of the Heavenly Father and He loves each one of us. He wants us to love one another, be kind to one another, and show respect for others' beliefs.

Fun fact: The Catholic Church hates the Masons because the Masons had the gall to support things like freedom of worship and separation of church and state, as well as the demonic notion of democracy.

"By a long and persevering labor, they endeavor to bring about this result - namely, that the teaching office and authority of the Church may become of no account in the civil State; and for this same reason they declare to the people and contend that Church and State ought to be altogether disunited. By this means they reject from the laws and from the commonwealth the wholesome influence of the Catholic religion; and they consequently imagine that States ought to be constituted without any regard for the laws and precepts of the Church."

"Then come their doctrines of politics, in which the naturalists lay down that all men have the same right, and are in every respect of equal and like condition; that each one is naturally free; that no one has the right to command another; that it is an act of violence to require men to obey any authority other than that which is obtained from themselves. According to this, therefore, all things belong to the free people; power is held by the command or permission of the people, so that, when the popular will changes, rulers may lawfully be deposed and the source of all rights and civil duties is either in the multitude or in the governing authority when this is constituted according to the latest doctrines. It is held also that the State should be without God; that in the various forms of religion there is no reason why one should have precedence of another; and that they are all to occupy the same place."

The Catholic Church hates religious freedom, except for the freedom for all people to be controlled by the Pope.

Just as crazy as god becoming both a mortal man and a spiritual heavenly presence at once, sent to earth in order to be killed and resurrected because two of the three humans he created at first did something they were told not to.

Or that god liked the speeches and violent morals of one man so much that he made him ascend to heaven, and decrees prayer to the direction of a meteorite several times a day.

Or that god is cool and all and he totally has the power to rain food from the sky and keep lamps lit longer than we thought, but the real coolness is this other guy who god had a conversation with one time.
