Weird, in Catholic high school I was taught that Mormons are a dangerous cult.

2012-10-02 08:56:29 AM
At least Democrats aren't resorting to tactics like, "if you voted in the primary, it counts for the general," or passing laws that disenfranchise white guys...

However: The phone banker making the call, which in this case went to a woman Hudson identifies as "the head of a pro-life committee at a parish I know" reportedly also asserted that "President Obama did not support abortion" and that Planned Parenthood "helps children get healthcare and prenatal care and does not promote abortion." In fact, the group is one of the nation's largest abortion providers.

Yeah, the phone banker is more full of shiat than a Christmas goose. Again, I loathe outright lies (although Planned Parenthood does BOTH: gets children healthcare AND does abortions).

Trollmitter headline: Robocalls to Catholics, "How can you support a Mormon?"

FTFA: links to an anecdote about an "Obama supporter" saying this over the phone to the caller.

From that article: "The head of a pro-life committee at a parish I know just received a call from the Obama campaign."

Okay, so not only is this not a robocall, but the linked anecdote cites a person seemingly okay with being in the public eye on the topics (head of a pro-life committee), but they can't cite their name?

Well, you've convinced me.

It's also the nation's largest abortion prevent-er.

We were just taught that they weren't really Christians since they didn't believe in the virgin birth or that the father, son and holy spirit are the same entity.

Yeah we had an entire semester of Ecclesiology about cults, and the Mormons were one of them. So were the Masons too, oddly enough.

They didn't say they don't do abortions, they said they don't promote abortions. Which they don't.

Because, as my father reported after coming home from mass this weekend, they are being threatened with excommunication for voting Democrat.

He is *this* close to becoming a Recovering Catholic like me. He is so frustrated by the leadership of the church.

Its true that they understand the Trinity to be separate persons, united in will and function rather than in essence. Then again Egyptian Coptic Christians hold Jesus to be one spirit rather than two natures in one person (human and divine). Lots of Xtian Churches that predate he councils of Chalcedon and Nicea hold the same beliefs. But you never hear Catholics or Protestants telling the media that Egyptians Coptic aren't Christians. Eastern Orthodox hold that the Holy Spirit comes from the Father with no relationship to the Son. But denying the virgin birth? That's a new one--more common to liberal Protestants than Mormons. Gonna have to provide evidence for that.

Wow. When did you go to a Catholic School?

Rhetoric like that would be difficult to find after about 1950, when Pius XII said that, while he didn't know if it was true, he was cool with people studying evolution.

If this is indeed happening, its disgusting. You might as well tell someone they shouldn't vote for Jews. But the evidence cited is purely anecdotal and hyperpartisan. I need better evidence.

It's obvious! You place a seer stone in a hat to read the the golden plates. They will tell you who to vote for! It's obviously not the black fellow since he is "evil." Just watch out for the black snakes as they can scare you away from the voting booth.

Sounds made up / calling shenanigans. Also, I'd really hope that no one would be dumb/asshole enough to do this.

But *if* you were dumb/asshole enough to do this, why target Catholics? Wouldn't Evangelicals be a better target for this type of douchebaggery?

2012-10-02 09:26:05 AM
Is it "How can you support a mormon?" like "How can I help you?" or "HOW can you SUPPORT a MORMON?!" like "How can I POSSIBLY help you?"

I'm pretty sure Obama is already polling ahead of Romney with Catholics.

"Our Church is under attack by the most liberal, pro-abortion leadership in history."

Shut up.

2012-10-02 09:30:05 AM
My family is Catholic and my dad has pretty much been a 1-issue voter (abortion) for a long time. I don't really bother talking politics with him, but I had the family over a couple weekends ago for my daughter's birthday and somehow the election came up and my dad was saying how he doesn't like to disparage other people's beliefs, but he asked me if I heard about how the mormons have these special underwear that they have to wear.

Totally cracked me up. He never said anything about how he was going to vote and I'm pretty damned sure he'll still pull the straight ticket 'R' lever, but just the idea that he could cast a ballot for Obama over Romney's magic underwear tickled my funny bone.

Jackson Herring: Yeah we had an entire semester of Ecclesiology about cults, and the Mormons were one of them. So were the Masons too, oddly enough.

I would point out that all the criticisms Catholicism has of Mormons were in fact applied (and continue to be in some cases) to Catholics by American Protestants in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Catholics weren't Christians--they were a "Cult" of "Papists" practicing "Popery.." Priests regularly rape nuns and the resulting children are born, baptized, then strangled and buried in the grounds of the convent. American Protestants even burned down a convent in Boston, just like they used to burn Mormon temples. In fact, people are still setting fire to LDS churches. Its happened in Arizona and Michigan both recently.

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who heard Obama diss Mormons last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

That's my point and why I find the concept of such a robocall to be silly. He *is* ahead of Romney among Catholics and Catholics are less likely to be anti-Mormon then, say, hard core Evangelicals.

A famous aggressive ex-Mormon ministry citing Bruce McConkie, who was repudiated by the Church for exactly the stuff like this? Sorry. That's not evidence. You might as well cite Mitt Romney's website to describe Barack Obama's policies.

If you make it impossible for clinics to perform abortions, then the remaining places that will are now the "biggest providers." And even then it's barely 3% of their services.

Stopping you morans from attacking science, gays, atheists, other religions and a woman's right to autonomy =/= Your Church being "under attack".

It's like taking a stick away from a child who's using it to poke his l'il brother and being told by said brat that you're the big meanie in this picture.

That's nice that you used your words and all, snowflake, but you still don't get the stick back.
