Do I get to have a "Boom--Head Shot!" moment?

2012-10-02 08:02:22 AM
There have been adverts for candidate videos for the last month or two on the Xbox Live homescreen. It makes me sad.

2012-10-02 08:03:20 AM
He, or at least someone he employs understands the demorgraphic. Knows that folks over 18 play games.
Now, if it was an ad that covered the screen in the middle of a fight or something, yeah I can see that as a pain in the ass.

Huh, that's funny, I don't see any when I load up Steam and play a bit on my computer.

Oh wait....

2012-10-02 08:19:00 AM
Sigh. Maybe one day people will vote for a candidate on their own merits rather than how much money they have spent or what colour they are. But I guess that's just too much to ask for.

On one hand, people SHOULD be more involved in the political process instead of being laissez-faire while our country MAY OR MAY NOT circle the drain. It's impossible to tell if you just don't give a shiat.

On the other hand, these political ads are as informative as asking a rock for dating advice.

Just because everybody doesn't vote as they do for intelligent reasons doesn't mean most people don't.

Unfortunately most people do not vote intelligently. I consider local elections equally, if not more important to me than a presidential election. It is civic duty to research everybody from president to local dog catcher in order to make an intelligent choice. By not doing so, you are doing yourself and your community a disservice.

A lot of people do those things. You aren't special or unique - you just have delusions of grandeur.
You should probably talk to somebody about that - they have a way of turning into full-blown paranoia.

It's time we discussed something rather important. The issue at hand is, well, my presidency. The question has been raised, I know, as to just how I came to be elected to this most illustrious office. Or whether or not I had been elected at all. To that I must answer; of course. Of course I was elected, sweet America, of course. Isn't the right to vote the very foundation of a democracy? Unfortunately, in the interest of national security, I am not at liberty to discuss the details of the election, you understand. But rest assured, I am your president because the appropriate people of this great nation decided I should be. I am your duly elected representative. Of course, when the time comes, when my term is up, America will be free to elect a new president. And that person will have our full faith and confidence, and carry our collective values forward into the future. Democracy, dear America. Democracy now, and forever. --Barack Hussein Obama

Political or not, does nobody else find the concept of advertising being placed into a video game you purchased to be more than slightly insulting to the consumer?

I understand that it's a new revenue stream and that new revenue streams are normal in any industry, but for some reason I find the notion of being advertised to in my escapist fantasy particularly galling when I've already paid for your product. Hellgate:London especially irritated me. I'm running along slaying demons in a 3D Diablo ripoff and all of a sudden I have a farking car ad in my face.

And I feel the same way about the digital stream of NFL's Sunday Ticket service. I already paid for it, I find it really annoying that all you're actually doing is passing me CBS's broadcast with all the ads intact.

I dunno... I just feel like I'm paying twice for the same thing. If you're going to make me buy your product to use it I shouldn't have to watch ads too. If you're going to double-dip to get something extra, I feel like I should also get something extra as the person paying the price twice.

I have no issues with it in some contexts. The best example I can give is in Burnout Paradise (published by EA of all people) The play space is a city and cites have billboards. I had no issues with the billboards having actual ads on them. Also the ad sales were what made the first few rounds of DLC free.

Don't be glib. We stand now at the precipice. A great nation once more threatens to crumble, to topple into the sea of lawlessness and despair that have ruled us all for over two hundred years. In short, my dearest America, we are at war.

The info on the main Xbox Live dashboard isn't the same bullshiat ads you see on TV and is actually a surprisingly interesting way of reaching out to a normally neglected demographic of voters. For example, you can unlock avatar Halo armor for watching the presidential debates through Xbox Live. No mudslinging involved, just watch the debates, get a pat on the head.

People might want to rage about this, but I think it's a great idea that's also easily ignored if you aren't interested. I'd rather Microsoft reward people for trying learn more about politics than reward them for eating more Doritos.

No, not a lot of people do these things. Maybe you need to get out and talk to people more. Ask the MTV generation why they will vote for who they vote for and listen to the hilarity ensue. The debates you see on fark don't represent the general population by any means.

/part of the MTV generation unfortunately

You know what? You're right. Politicians MIGHT be less able to run slipshod over the populace if the populace actually put in SOME effort to stay informed...
