Yeah, but the Yankees are playing a Red Sox team that simple doesn't give a crap. Just look at last night's game.

What you did there subby, I see it.

First Washington Senators motto: "First in war, first in peace, and last in the American League."
Second Washington Senators motto: "First in war, first in peace, and STILL last in the American League."
What I said when the Nats came to be: "First in war, first in peace, and last in the NL East."

Hey, we still got baseball to play tonight. Here are the scenarios:

AL:
Yankees - in - tied with Rangers for #1 - needs any 2 wins or O's losses for AL East - Yankees hold tiebreaker over Rangers
Rangers - in - tied with Yankees for #1 - needs any win for AL West
A's - in - tied with O's for WC1/2 - can still win AL West by winning final 2 games - A's hold tiebreaker over O's
O's - in - tied with A's for WC1/2 - needs 3 wins and Yankees losses to force a 163, all 4 games win AL East outright
Tigers - AL Central champs - locked into #3

NL:
Nats - NL East champs - tied with Reds for #1 - Nats hold tiebreaker over Reds
Reds - NL Central champs - tied with Nats for #1
Braves - WC1, locked
Giants -NL West champs - locked into #3
Cards - WC2 with any win or Dodgers loss
Dodgers - needs to win both remaining games and for Cards to lose theirs to force a 163 for WC2

Rack up enough #1 overall picks and anybody can win. Tampa did it but doesn't have the money to bring in free agents like Washington can.

// Well, anybody but the Pirates.

I was there last night, and it was wonderful (even if it did happen during a loss). It was great to see everyone hanging out after the game, enjoying the moment.

No, that's not true. Tons of overall number ones have flamed out. The Nats got lucky in back to back years with Strasburg & Harper, really the 2 best prospects in a generation (Trout will probably be a better player, but he wasn't *quite* the prospect that Harper was). That just doesn't happen normally. They were luckier than other teams, like the Cubs.

Oh, I know. They've done nicely developing their top prospects in general. Ryan Zimmerman was another top draft pick (4th or 5th overall I think) and Jordan Zimmermann was in the second round a few years later.

I was watching him give an interview on MLB Network last night. He tried and failed to hide that the Nats plan to use him in the playoffs. He'll be pitching in October.

Wednesday, from what I've been reading. But I have tickets to both games as well as all of the post-season so I'll be there if it happens in 2012.

Nah. They'll want a packed house. And with the regular starters on the bench combined with the rain, the stadium's probably gonna be pretty empty tonight. And will be empty again tomorrow (1:00 Wednesday game).

So you consider 96 wins (best record in the entire mlb) backing into a division crown? Especially with Atlanta in the division having a record that would give them first place in all other divisions?

You sir know nothing about baseball.

If I could find a small enough version of the gif with the fat kid in a Nats shirt doing finger guns at Wrigley on opening day, this is where I'd post it.

Actually that is the definition of backing into a division title, you didnt win to get it and had to rely on the other team to lose so you could lock it up, seems you dont know a lot about baseball..........

/braves have done it numerous times
//they look better this year and are playing the best they have all year
///hate the wild card game though, a hot player can knock out the better team
//it will be changed the first time this happens to a major market(yankmees, dead sox....)

You know what I hate as much or more than the wild card game? The fact that the "home" teams have to play the first two games on the road.

I think they should save that for opening day after we win the World Series; or never, since that would ruin the whole thing.

Yeah, that makes sense. My wife got free tickets to the game tonight but since the weather has been crap all day and is likely to continue to be crap into the evening, I probably won't go even if it eventually gets played.

/Likes the idea of either Teddy wins all races during the World Series in an effort to inspire the team, or, as I believe was said a few comments up, opening day the season AFTER winning the WS, have Teddy win in some glorious fashion. Maybe he rides a horse (shutup, the real TR loved horses!) or maybe Rizzo gives him a piggy-back ride.

Seeing how I won't be having any kids, that's not a problem.

Ok technically yes you are right. But I'm just saying it isn't like they only won say 86 games and totally relied on the rest of the divsion to completely fall apart at the end of the season. That to me is truelly backin into the division title.

However yes you are correct and I am wrong.

Yeah, they got lucky the collapse didnt happen two weeks earlier or they may not have only lost the division but missed the playoffs, they are playing their worst baseball at the end of the season and that is never good, I should know since I follow the braves! Every year they played bad towards the end, almost like they relaxed and never got it back for the playoffs, Im just saying, be wary........I actually love that the braves are playing their best baseball here at the end and outside of Hanson the entire pitching staff is looking good. He may get left off the playoff roster at this rate.

Just wondering what you would consider not backing into the title, given that you rarely get a matchup between 1-2 teams in the division at the end of the year to decide who wins.

Guess they had it planned for the last game of the pennant winning season...not bad. I was listening on the radio, and apparently he had on gold shoes.

/And Zim just tied the game with a HR on the first at bat afterwards.

wow the rare "internet mea culpa." Well done. I agree with you, however: 96 wins is nothing to sneeze at; it's not like they're barely getting into the playoffs on the last day of the season that way. I would have like to see them win (I was there Monday), but still... it was great, any way they got it. And rubbing it in Philly's face was great.
