Note nothing about a warrant, and reasonable notice is not defined, therefore it can be construed to be reasonable when they show up. If someone calls up and says they saw you brandishing a sniper rifle when you were just cleaning your hunting rifle, reasonable notice is the time it takes them to tell you they are coming in when the RCMP knock on your door. This is common practice if you read about these incidents in the news.

The point is that it's a bunch of retarded fear mongering to prevent 137 deaths a year out of over 27 million people, which is readily apparent when you compare it to the rate of death by lightning strike. In fairness to C_Canuck, you missed an important conjunction, which I bolded, embiggened, and italiated above.

They have to give reasonable notice to the owner/occupant, *AND* either have a warrant or their consent, unless there is a business being conducted in the dwelling. That's how I read it.

USA - Check to see if the kids are OK. Check for holes in person, property.
Canada - Assume it is a car backfiring unless you are in a rural area, in which case it is probably just a poacher.

USA - Check to see if your area is "dry" or "wet", then load up a shopping cart in nearest store
Canada - Decide whether to buy at a government outlet or wait until you get to the US and can load up a cart with duty-free at the nearest store to the border.

USA: The service economy is a sick joke but service is generally cheerful and excellent due to competition and the natural inclination of Americans to buy and sell anything, anywhere, at any time, even when sleep-walking.
Canada: Service has been heard of, but never seen except on vacation in the US or abroad. The basic attitude is a combination of pre-War British service (slow, reluctant, incompetent, able to ignore you as long as you are able to linger hopefully) and French (speedy, competent, snarky, doesn't have what you want and wouldn't sell it to you if they did, yah bum).

USA: portions: gigantic; price: usually moderate; service: good; food: from horrible to suberb
Canada: portions: laughable; price: immoderate; service: unknown; food: from horrible to almost superb depending on whether you are in Quebec and whether you are in a major city or not. Your best bet when travelling: keep driving. You'll get to a place where good food can be purchased eventually, usually in the next province or state.

It may also be people mis-remembering what actually happened and assuming they had no choice.

Or misrepresenting what happened because when you're outraged about being mistreated by the man, admissions like that tend to detract from the story :). I'd say it's equal parts of each.

For the consent issue, a lot of agencies use a form and/or some kind of recording device to have the subject explain to the police (yup) in clear language exactly what they're consenting to and the consequences if a Bad Thing is found. Usually the discussion starts off with "The end point is the same; we come inside, we check out this legitimate complaint that your firearm is prohibited/unregistered andrestricted/stored unsafely, and we go on our way. If you'd like us to get a warrant we can certainly do that, but we're going to have to stand here and secure the house until the warrant's approved so..."

Last Friday at work, we had a demonstration of WW2 small arms for a Grade 9 school group (.38 revolver, Lee-Enfield No 4, and the Bren light machine-gun)--firing blank, of course; while at the same time we had a gay wedding for a couple from Oregon out at the lighthouse. One of the grooms is in the US Navy. They had smiles a mile wide.

Gotta love being Canadian.

Even in the US, people who live in the city and who own firearms tend to keep that information to themselves. You probably *DO* know someone, or more likely multiple people, who own firearms in the city, it's just not something they advertise.

True... I do come from a rural background, and am living in a smaller town. I didn't know anyone in the city who had a gun (their families all had them. "back home").
Interestingly enough, we live near a military firing range, so the sounds of automatic weapons fire in the evening isn't a particularly rare event.
