Jeez, how about a "not safe for lunch" tag?

>It was originally found during the demolition of an old fortified tower in 1907, having been preserved in the chalky limestone which was disturbed during the work.

I wonder if the "liar" story came later, and this was actually immurement. :-(

What kind of a ghoul keeps a severed hand laying about?
Oh, it's all in the name of mumbo jumbo?
Well, then, it's OK.

Grow a pair? Jesus, it's a mummified hand.

This being from a church, I assumed it was a relic of a saint or something but no, just a random severed hand. wtf?

THIS.

I could see if it was a holy relic. They're interesting from a historical perspective - the cult status surrounding saintly relics was a central feature of the medieval Catholic church. Of course the vast majority of them were fakes.

The churches and monasteries that housed them relied on them as a source of income - one of their few sources of cash in what was predominately a barter economy. They were the tourist traps of their day; a pilgrimage to see a relic might be the only time the average person ever went more than 10 miles from his home.

I would bet the vast majority of "holy relics" are random body parts

That is not some trivial "severed hand". It is the hand of Mohammed, who got it chopped off for stealing a goat to fulfill his "intimacy issue".

The name of the church interested me. Someone stole a St. Brighid reliquary here early this year, but ended up leaving it in a field when the relic wasn't inside it. A couple of months later a supposed piece of the "true cross" was stolen from another church here. Apparently the thief hid in a confessional all night to get their hands on it. I don't think they ever found that one.

/I was at a sci-fi, fantasy and horror fiction convention in Dublin when the second theft hit the news
//chatted to several authors who were already dreaming up story ideas from it
///no, Dan Brown wasn't invited
