"...that somehow fail to match the results of every other reputable polling firm out there and consistently skew around 4% higher for republicans"

There's an extra "L" in that statement.

I love it. Their actual argument is that because Rasmussen makes people pay for their results, logically through the free market they are a better polling firm.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows President Obama attracting support from 50% of voters nationwide, while Mitt Romney earns the vote from 47%.

They literally believe the market is magic.

Remember that article they ran a while back saying that it's impossible for a market to fail? Magic.

Certainly at least a 2% skew towards the GOP. They have announced an even more favourable methodology for the GOP last week so it may now be closer to the 4% as you suggest.

They do poll America and report accurate results, however those are also tailored and incomplete results. It goes sumting like dees:

Q1) Will you vote for Obama or Romney: (Obama +4)
Q2) Will you vote for Obama or Saint Romney: (Obama +1)
Q3) Will you vote for Saint Romney or evil communist liebral socialist muslim fartbongo pongo oingo boingo the destroyer Obama? (Romney +3)

Rasmussen poll result: Romney + 3 !!!

A.) Nobody has out forward any type of sensible hypothesis as to why the polls would be "skewed". The polling companies all need to pick up clients to get them through the next two years and being terribly inaccurate for funsies is not going to accomplish that.

B.) All polling firms charge. That's how they make money, mostly for polling on terribly interesting things like how wide an intersection should be.

C.) If Obama wins, how much shiat will be lost by republicans.

Exactly. They use selection bias on their reported results.

Yeah, it's not bad when Republicans do it. They're just trying to make it to Rapture. Who are you to thwart Galt's will?

Compare CNN to Rasmussen, which sells access to its polls and reports results every day.

In order to get a niche in a market that is reporting the same accurate data, it is advantageous to skew results in order to sell your product to a specific consumer. In Rasmussen's case it is conservatives. They are a business so to them the accuracy of their polls matters less than the marketability.

2012-10-02 09:37:05 AM
To be fair, Rasmussen is doing better this year isn't it?
Still skewed slightly but almost every pollster has a house bias.

/Trusting one poll is bad science.

For several weeks they were 6-8 points skewed right from the average of the rest of the polls. They are much closer to the average the last couple of weeks.

Moreover, no one is paying CNN for its polling information. VS. people fork out money to see what Scott Rasmussen has found out about America

Couldn't you just as easily say that the invisible hand of the market would cause Rasmussen to sell what his customers want; namely polls that say that Obama is going to go down like a $2 whore, while CNN is not beholden to any particular group or interests?

Rasmussen is in the business of selling stuff that their customers want to buy. No one wants to buy polls which tell them they are losing

The argument of the article (I skimmed it) seems to be that there are more people in each state that identify themselves as conservative over liberal.

The problem with this result is that the GOP echo chamber has turned "liberal" into a dirty word. It's filthy and unclean to be "liberal." Hence, most people answer "conservative" to that question. I wonder how many people would answer as "moderate" if that choice was part of the survey.

My point here is, this argument that American Thinker is making, is based on a false reality. My parents, for example, are people I would consider to be very conservative. Religion, guns, etc. If pressed, they would never identify themselves as liberal. However, they've never voted for a Republican in their entire lives.

There is no sadder sight than to watch the squalling, moist death throes of a god. To see that thing that they once revered, prostate, helpless, unable to raise its head, each shuddering thrust of its legs only enough to grind its shoulders forwards against the gravelled floor of its former temple. So proud, so powerful, so real and true, it stood above them, and its breath was proud and easy, then. Proclamations so eternal as to echo through kings' ears and from their mouths, now nothing but a flopping, helpless, barely-cogniscant thing. Let it lay there, oh ye wanderers, let it lay, ye who discover its hallowed places, and give it the dignity of its end. Watch from the temple steps as the last drops of its blood slither from its suppurating rends, and watch the last of its ever-mythic trickling down.

I was kinda on the fence on this whole "skewed Rasmussen polls" thingy but now that I know American Thinker is vouching for them I think we can put all of these ugly, sordid, lying accusations safely be...

Do people forget 2000? Rasmussen Reports - which was called "Portrait Of America" back then - predicted Bush would beat Gore by 8 percentage points in their final tracking poll. In fact, Gore beat Bush by 1% (but lost the electoral vote). Rasmussen promised to look into his methodology and report back on why his poll was so, so wrong. His actual response was to shut down "Portrait of America", re-open it as "Rasmussen Reports", and hope that everyone would forget this embarrassment.

Rasmussen has never been particularly accurate. I swear his results can easily be replicated by averaging all the other polls and adding 2% to the Republican.

Or you could point out that CNN isn't conducting the poll by having Wolf Blitzer and John King call people, but that they hire an outside group to do the polling for them. The group is a company called "ORC", a market research firm.

All these "The polls are rigged except the ones that agree with my fantasy world" and "Once you unskew the liberal slanted polls" folks are in for a rude awakening on Election Night, I think...

My understanding is that you approach the election Rasmussen converges with other polls so that they can show accuracy in their predictions.
